Are people ever going to stop asking about holidays?!

Tequilala · 11/02/2021 15:33

Hi,

Don't get me wrong, I'd absolutely love a holiday! Who wouldn't?! But honestly, if I see one more "Hancock says it's too early to give holidays the go ahead" type headlines, I'll lose what I have left of my mind!

The same pointless questions at the briefings are an absolute waste of time. Why do they bother? As if Boris, Hancock etc will just turn round and say "ah.. well actually, Laura, it's good news! We're still in lockdown, but sod it! Get your castanets out and your sombrero on, it's time to book that all inclusive afterall! 🥳"

I feel for the travel industry, I really do, but it's quite clear that right now, it would be very unwise to book anything, unless you can get a full refund I suppose.

It reminds me of when your kids keep asking the same question over and over, until you finally cave, just to get a bit of peace! Is thar what the press are hoping to happen?

Press: "Boris, can we go on holiday?"
Boris: "Alas, I'm afraid it's just too soon to say".
Press: "Boris, can we go on holiday yet?
Boris: "No"
Press: How about now?.....Now?....How about now?..

🤦‍♀️🤯

No, same as people on here keep asking 'when....?', then getting shitty when anyone responds with the only actual answer, which is 'no one knows'.

Wherediditgo · 11/02/2021 18:06

People just want something to look forward to OP. I can’t say I blame them.

ZoBo123 · 11/02/2021 18:11

I have booked my UK holiday for August. I can't afford to wait until the prices go up. I have insurance and will get a refund if it doesn't go ahead. At the time I was booking I was sure things would be better and we would be able to go. Now I am not sure. Why not tell people they can book a refundable holiday? Are they setting us up for further restrictions all year. I like that the press are asking the question. It is not about holidays as such it is more about a plan and questioning the governments plan. Which they would hold them to account more

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2021 18:13

@wanderings

They could at least APOLOGISE for the effect this sustained lockdown with no end in sight is having on our mental health, just like Boris grovelled about the dead - but I suppose they don't want to apologise for any ill-effects of lockdown, because they're afraid we might start rioting.
Why?!

That implies its their fault.

Its not.

Its just one of those things.

It is what it is.

Jaxhog · 11/02/2021 18:14

What's a holiday?

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?

BUT WHYYYYYYYYY?

Its that level.

It's important to me as I have a bucket list before I have life changing surgery where I'll lose 50 percent of the movement in my neck and it's a risky surgery. Most things on my bucket list are places I'd love to visit. I don't have all the time in the world so I'm really hoping to be able to visit a couple of places this Summer.

This. It's about having some kind of plan so you can look forward to something. I've booked free cancellation and not booked flights yet

Yes, how stupid and selfish and childish of people to want to know if they can have some glimmer of their normal lives back six months into the vaccine rollout. Ridiculously entitled to think you have some sort of ‘right’ to travel more than two miles away from your house. Who even needs a holiday anyway, can’t you just walk around the park again?

Oblomov21 · 11/02/2021 18:25

I too am getting fed up if that question.
In fact most of the questions on the 5pm briefing are so stupid I cringe. I just can't watch them anymore, only watch very occasionally, because proles stupidity gets on my nerves.

ancientgran · 11/02/2021 18:27

At least it's a break from, "we can't hug, when can we hug." I think if anyone ever tries to hug me again I will have a screaming fit.

ancientgran · 11/02/2021 18:29

@HaveANiceFuckingDay

We were supposed to go last March to Tenerife the first holiday for 6 years then Covid happened , we literally have a fist full of euros , suitcases packed and a prepaid card Now all in the loft .. my husband is desperate to go , he doesn’t use all of his annual leave because his job is intense and stressful , he just wants to go I get it ...I really do but I don’t want to lose the money we put on the prepaid card ( do they have a shelf life ?) If we don’t lose money I’ll quite happily go 2022 .. but I do think this year at least before this September is out of the question He is very ready to book for next June 2022 .. I’ll wait ( change of job , possibly in a school )
You need to check the card, I had one but it was a few years ago so might have changed but you had a monthly charge if it wasn't being used, it wasn't huge but it did chip away at the balance.

Brits and their weird holiday obsession. I don't see any other countries harping on about it. They're more concerned with jobs and school.

I do wonder about the Australian perspective. They’re another society that I associate with travel
ancientgran · 11/02/2021 18:34

@MoirasRoses

I’ve booked two U.K. breaks. Soz Boris 😂 it’s something to hope for & look forwards too. Full refunds & you don’t pay in full until nearer the time so 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’d rather be disappointed at a cancellation than disappointed I didn’t bother to book anywhere. I’m happy to accept not going abroad this year.
I can't see why that is a problem. Last summer we booked a holiday for October half term with GC. As time went on we could see it wasn't a good idea so we cancelled. I don't think it hurt anyone that we tried to think positive. I think it would have been unreasonable to go but that is a different matter (I live in a seaside town, packed in October half term and numbers went mad the following week.)
GoldenOmber · 11/02/2021 18:34

I would suspect the appeal of the questions about holidays right now is that it’s bringing together different things people are interested in.

  • when can we get our normal lives back?
  • border closures are a very extreme step, how long is that going to be in place for?
  • by summer we’ll have vaccinated most adults - if that’s not enough for holidays then what are we waiting for?
  • does the government actually have a plan here or is it flailing?

Also suspect that calling people entitled whingers for wanting to know when they get to go on holiday again is not the right answer to any of those.

Incyra · 11/02/2021 18:49

How can they possible know now what the situation is going to be in July/Aug or even Easter. Its irritating me as well. It is nit absolutely essential to have a holiday although of course it would be nice but to give it so much emphasis when some can hardly feed their families at the moment strikes me as crass.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2021 18:51

I think the problem it also is about people wanting some fantasy element in their lives.

And they will never get the answer they want because the situation means we can't indulge luxury.

Thats the problem. Its fantasy v reality.

GoldenOmber · 11/02/2021 18:58

Going on holiday is not ‘some fantasy element’ of life, though. It is a perfectly normal feature of many people’s lives pre-covid. Scolding people for wanting that back six months into the vaccine rollout, after they have sat at home for the greater good for over a year, is not going to make them sheepishly shut up.

Yeah we probably shouldn’t be having international holidays when holidays are overwhelmed. But at some point, we are going to get to have holidays again. And if that point is not summer, then people are going to ask increasingly loudly when it is, then, and what exactly we’re waiting for.

GoldenOmber · 11/02/2021 18:59

When hospitals are overwhelmed, even, although I bet holiday destinations are going to be pretty overwhelmed as soon as it’s an option again!

@GoldenOmber, you're missing my point. Of course the question should be asked, but not on a constant loop!

I'm not in the 'shut up and get on with it, remember the war, go for another walk round the block' camp. I absolutely long for the tiniest hint of normality. Honestly, the thought of sitting in my local beer garden with a G&T makes me feel quite overwhelmed with excitement Confused but asking the question about when that will happen, on repeat is not going to get me the answer I want any sooner.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2021 19:02

It is when you are in the middle of a pandemic and the hospitals are full of dying patients and you expect to fly off around the world!

GoldenOmber · 11/02/2021 19:03

They’re going to keep answering because it’s obvious the government doesn’t have an answer or even a consistent line, and the press like finding a weak point, and because it’s a proxy for the broader questions a lot of people have about what the exit strategy from lockdowns is.
