Would you gain weight to become eligible for the vaccine?!

I’m 9lb away from a BMI of 40.

As it stands I wouldn’t eligible for the vaccine until my age group (30’s)

If I was to gain 9lb (which I don’t think I’d struggle to do) I’d be eligible.

Would you? I think I’d be able to lose the 9lb again....

Don’t be ridiculous.

titchy · 08/02/2021 16:58

Wouldn't losing 9lbs be a better idea? Hmm

PurpleDaisies · 08/02/2021 16:58

No.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/02/2021 16:58

Absolutely not. Why on earth would you? Just wait your turn.

eurochick · 08/02/2021 16:58

No one would be stupid enough to increase their risk factors surely? The mind boggles.

sweetlikechamord · 08/02/2021 16:58

@StrangerHereMyself

Don’t be ridiculous.
@StrangerHereMyself

Well I’m not trying to be ridiculous....

Possibly - in your case it’s a very crude cut off and I suspect you’re relatively at risk and won’t be able to lose weight fast enough to reduce your risk

katiemumma20 · 08/02/2021 16:59

I definitely would not do this! Surely the reason people of that BMI are offered it makes them at risk of getting the disease. So you’d be putting yourself at a higher risk of getting Corona until you got the vaccine which you don’t know how long would be. 9lbs is a significant amount as well it’s not like gaining 1 or 2 pounds. Can’t you just wait or is there something else you’re worried about that puts your risk up like your job?

sweetlikechamord · 08/02/2021 17:00

@Waxonwaxoff0

Well because my BMI is already really high, so surely I’m at risk anyway and a vaccine would help with that.

OP posts:
LH1987 · 08/02/2021 17:00

No, I wouldn’t do this.

I understand it’s a scary time and everyone wants the vaccine but there is something very wrong morally with deliberately making yourself more unhealthy in order to get ahead in the queue. Also losing 9lb isn’t easy, if it was no one would be overweight or obese.

sweetlikechamord · 08/02/2021 17:00

@HermioneWeasley

Yes this, exactly.

I mean, if you are that desperate to jump the queue, you’d be better putting small weights in your pocket and then stepping on the scales at the gps.

That way at least you aren’t increasing your risk (and the drain on the NHS) in order to do so!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/02/2021 17:01

Seriously?
Why don't you try and lose weight to decrease your risk Hmm
(And I really hope you haven't started this in order to kick start a fat shaming thread)

fresiaboquet · 08/02/2021 17:02

so, you would gain weight which would increase your chances of getting more unwell if you were to catch covid, just so you could then have a vaccination which would reduce your chances of becoming more unwell if you catch covid, and meanwhile someone else who is vulnerable has to wait just that bit longer to get their vaccine.....yes great idea. go for it. Hmm

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/02/2021 17:02

Well Covid has been around for a year so you've had plenty of time to try and reduce your BMI. If you think you could lose 9lbs why haven't you taken steps to reduce your weight already?

@katiemumma20

I’m due back to work in 8 weeks (on mat leave)
My son with be at nursery and I’m office based (job can’t be done from home)

Those factors make me feel like I’m going to be at risk.

@Waxonwaxoff0

I have. My BMI was 35 when my son was born.
I had PND and my BMI went up to 43.
I’ve been exercising and losing weight, slowly, but it’s coming off.

OP posts:
Xerochrysum · 08/02/2021 17:04

That is most silliest thing I ever heard. So to get a vaccine, you put yourself in more danger? Your bmi is already in danger zone, and vaccine isn't 100% effective.

katiemumma20 · 08/02/2021 17:05

To reassure you it doesn’t really sound like you’re at high risk compared to anyone else! 8 weeks is ages, cases will have massively dropped by then as they have dropped loads in the last 5 weeks. An office is quite a low risk if you have the correct measures in place that all offices should have by now.

Who would I want to fat shame...? Myself?!

Strange thing to say! Hmm

garlictwist · 08/02/2021 17:05

It's clearly a stupid idea but I can also see why you're tempted to do it. Gaining 9 pounds would be easier than losing it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/02/2021 17:05

I'm overweight myself and work in a high risk job. I wouldn't dream of deliberately trying to "queue jump" by putting on weight, it's my own fault I'm overweight and it's my responsibility to decrease my own risk.

@katiemumma20

But my son will be in nursery so that’s more of a risk to me than my office.
