Would you gain weight to become eligible for the vaccine?!

sweetlikechamord · 08/02/2021 16:56

I’m 9lb away from a BMI of 40.

As it stands I wouldn’t eligible for the vaccine until my age group (30’s)

If I was to gain 9lb (which I don’t think I’d struggle to do) I’d be eligible.

Would you? I think I’d be able to lose the 9lb again....

In 8 weeks you can lose 1 stone if you put your mind to it. Please don't do this OP. Think of all the viceral fat around your organs. It's actually madness. You need to be urgently going in the other direction.
The virus won't be transmitting so freely in 8 weeks because 20-40% of adults will have had the vaccine. Your risk of catching it when you go back to work will be lower than it is now. Use these 8 weeks to improve your health and immune system. Take vitamins, get outside for brisk walks which elevate your heart. Get in a minimum of 10,000 steps each day. That will serve you better than moving into the morbidly obsese category.

Twattergy · 08/02/2021 19:27

Here's a thought. All adults will be able to be vaccinated by Septemberish time. You will get vaccinated. Other more at risk people should be vaccinated before you. Why not double your health benefit and reduce your anxiety by setting yourself a target to lose weight in advance of getting your vaccine in autumn?

Zogstart · 08/02/2021 19:32

Sorry OP but if your BMI is almost 40 to begin with you are deluding yourself that you’d be able to lose this 9lb easily.

Nunoftheother · 08/02/2021 19:33

I’m not trying to jump the que. I’m very nearly vulnerable and this makes me anxious. Another 9lb on and I’d be vulnerable.
Covid isn’t going to say oh well you’re 9lb too low for me to make you seriously ill...

I'm not sure what a "que" is, but you keep basically repeating the same thing. And you do want to put yourself at the front of the queue sooner than you would otherwise be, by gaining nine pounds. I'm suggesting an alternative which doesn't involve any risk to your health.

But if you think adding another half a stone to your already excessive weight makes more sense, then knock yourself out!

Dallerup · 08/02/2021 19:33

Not sure if I'd gain weight to get it but my BMI is 42 and I realised the other day that I had subconsciously started sabotaging any even half hearted attempts to lose weight

WithTheJonses · 08/02/2021 20:02

Most stupid fucking thing I've read on here honestly. No. Do not gain over half a stone just to get the jab.

Maybe lose the weight. If you don't get covid you could get diabetes etc any other obese related health issues. Covid isn't the only killer here

Rainbowsandstorms · 08/02/2021 20:06

I can totally understand that you’re scared and close to the cut off. I can see that it would be tempting and appreciate 9lb isn’t a lot but by the sounds of it you’re in the mindset of loosing weight and doing well. By gaining weight it’ll be easy to loose that mindset and will undo so much of the hard work you’ve been putting in. Keep focusing on eating well as part of the risk of being overweight is that most people who are overweight have a lot of inflammation in their body so focus on avoiding foods that promote inflammation and continuing to eat well and loose weight. I know it feels like a huge task but each lb you loose continues to lower your risk. Take your vitamin D, do stuff you enjoy to lower your stress levels, exercise and try and get lots of sleep too (I know it’s hard with a baby!) as all of these things also help to boost your immune system. Every little bit will help to reduce your risk and you have age on your side too.

@CatkinToadflax

As elderly Korean lady said above, there is currently a lot of confusion regarding whether people with asthma who use steroid inhalers are in group 6 or not. The JCVI seems to have removed certain asthma medications from group 6 and Asthma UK is currently seeking urgent clarification. So it is possible that your husband would have been in group 6 but may not be currently.
@CatkinToadflax

My husband has his asthma review on Friday and the nurse confirmed he is group 6.

I just think it's terrible that Covid has messed with everyone's heads so much that you've thought of this as a possible cunning plan! Everything is so very messed up right now for many of us.

If you have time, have a listen to this: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000htw2

More or Less is a brilliant prog explains and debunks the numbers and stats used in political debate and the media. This episode has a section specifically about obesity and Covid and the risk is nothing like as bad as a lot of folk seem to think it is.

But keep on with your healthier living and weight loss as there are so many benefits. So many other risks attached to putting more weight on.

skeenskeenjellybean · 08/02/2021 20:18

p.s. sorry about the word salad above. My monkey fingers aren't cutting it on my stupid new phone.

PusheenLove · 11/02/2021 18:03

OP, your idea is as ridiculous as the following one ..

  1. Get a job at a care home.
  2. Book both tests.
  3. Get vaccinated.
  4. Never turn up for a day's work at care home.
Halo
doireallyneedaname · 11/02/2021 18:34

I really hope you didn’t do that.

morninglive · 11/02/2021 18:45

You could have spent lockdown losing weight and getting fitter as the risks have been known for months.

Gaining more weight is just ridiculous

doireallyneedaname · 11/02/2021 19:25

You do realise it’s not as simple as that for some people, right?

FishWithoutABike · 11/02/2021 19:30

Have a salty Chinese take away or similar the night before your weigh in and drink lots of water. Wear heavy shoes etc you’ll probably add 9lb.

Figgyboa · 11/02/2021 19:57

Pretty ridiculous. You say you're not trying to jump the queue but that's exactly what your proposing by purposely putting on weight. But hey, if you want to make yourself even more unhealthy go for it

OverTheRainbow88 · 11/02/2021 20:10

@sweetlikechamord

I commented a whole back and have been thinking about this.. I think in your situation I would. 9lb isn’t that much and you could loose it again quite quickly . I put on 3lb last week just but not doing my usual exercise and eating a bit more choc than usual, as have been very busy at work

RedcurrantPuff · 11/02/2021 20:20

I have a BMI of over 40, it’s not been fun knowing I am at higher risk. The vaccine is an extremely small silver lining but I’d rather have a lower BMI so as not to be in group 6.

Really? Who gets push down list as a result
MarshaBradyo · 11/02/2021 20:22

To op no don’t. Better to go the other way and lose it

Scottishgirl85 · 11/02/2021 20:24

In the nicest possible way, with a BMI of 40 there are far greater health risks to you than covid will ever be.

Kitewoman · 11/02/2021 20:29

If you can lose 9lbs that easily, wouldn't it be much easier to go on a weight loss journey???

Do you know know that, even if you get covid protection, increase the risks of all sorts of other conditions?

shame there is no vaccine against stupidity. That would help you!

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 11/02/2021 20:35

Or wear loose trousers and bend your knees when they measure your height!! That'll bump your BMI up!

Your welcome.

Or carry on with your weight loss and try to stop worrying. Well done on what you've done so far - with PND that's good going.

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 11/02/2021 20:36

you're - jeez
