Extending school term at end of July

That's not going to work. Another ridiculous idea. What about all those people that moved their cancelled holidays for 2020 by a year. Summer holidays may go ahead if vaccine roll out happens and who is going to cancel and lose their money - I'm not. Will be lots of absent children.

Catch-up with being out of their hair probably.

BelleSausage · 07/02/2021 19:18

@Remmy123

Be honest, would you be up for 10 days of unpaid overtime that would cost you £3000 in childcare and cancelled holidays?

grenadines · 07/02/2021 19:21

My child is in yr 11 and there will be nothing for them to do in July as they will be leaving school in June after whatever assessments replace GCSEs. Therefore this year group would end up missing two weeks of year 12 under this proposal which will mean less A level teaching which they really do need.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/02/2021 19:21

I won’t tell you what I do, but I have been working my arse off over the last year.

sherrystrull · 07/02/2021 19:21

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Exactly.

From I see I cannot be that many schools/teachers actually did the equivalent of 195 days of teaching.

But of course they will disagree.

It’s just my opinion, no need to get defensive. Unless there is a reason for it.

I'll disagree with you. And I have much more of an idea of how many days I have worked than you do. It's many more than what I've been paid for.

Of course you have.

And we’re supposed to just believe you? You don’t seem to believe us.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/02/2021 19:23

I honestly don’t care if you believe me or not.

BelleSausage · 07/02/2021 19:24

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Why won’t we have done the required hours this year? Do you know something that we don’t?

Because I have worked every day this school year, including extra days to set up work for online learning, teaching online lessons full time and spending my day off planning and marking.

So could you tell me where I missed a day?

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2021 19:24

I've worked 1,672 hours since Sept. Unfortunately SOWs don't rewrite themselves for remote teaching. I get paid for 1,295 hours in a year. It's only February.

DBML · 07/02/2021 19:25

Good, because I feel the same.

I’m happy with the time I’ve put into my teaching job this year and will say no to any more guilt free

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2021 19:25

And I too don't care about anyone's opinion anymore as I'm sure teacher bashing will now become an Olympic sport it's so popular. I work hard for the kids.

motherrunner · 07/02/2021 19:25

Think DH and I (teachers) and DD and DS may be poorly for those two weeks ☀️

BelleSausage · 07/02/2021 19:26

@mumsneedwine
Amen to that. It has taken hours to rewrite our schemes for online provision. Some parents seem to think that the tailored worksheets and Power Points their kids get grown on trees.

It took me a total of 40 hours to write the seven week scheme we used with Yr8 in autumn 1.

Itsnotlikethiswithotherpeople · 07/02/2021 19:28

No way. They need to play with their friends, see their grandparents etc. Madness. I don’t see how they can enforce it in any way and I don’t see that teachers will be keen either.
The solution is for government to change academic standards and except that year 2 children are working more at year 1 level etc. But for some reason they are continuing with this nonsense idea that the curriculum is continuing. It’s not. Teachers are working bloody hard, parents are tearing their hair out, children are fed up. They should have paused the curriculum in January and said its restarting after Easter where we left off.

Itsnotlikethiswithotherpeople · 07/02/2021 19:28

Accept not except. My rage stopped my being able to spell.

Anyone who has booked a summer holiday that is non refundable is foolish.

Aab1234 · 07/02/2021 19:30

Many employers have asked employees to go above and beyond over the past 12 months for no additional compensation. Why should teachers be exempt?

motherrunner · 07/02/2021 19:30

I went to live teaching to timetable the first Monday of Lockdown 1 in March 2020. Can I have my holiday please? 🙏

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2021 19:31

@Aab1234 well I've worked every school day providing full days of lessons and feedback, and and also half Easter providing KW support. Does that help ?

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2021 19:31

@Aab1234 no one has said they are exempt ??? You're the one saying we haven't done it. We have.

Santastealer · 07/02/2021 19:32

I’m a teacher, I’ve got a holiday booked so no chance am I working after term ends.

I’ve always worked more hours than ever delivering online lessons during lock down and having to modify all my existing lesson plans to make them suitable. Plus all the extra marking and feedback. By July, I will be very ready for my 5 week summer!

In reality an extra 2 weeks is not going to do much to make up for the hours of learning lost. The best thing they could do is a proper shake up of the national curriculum with a whole new approach on assessment methods.

DBML · 07/02/2021 19:32

@Aab1234 are you Dragon with a name change? Here to continue spitting the venom?

Aab1234 · 07/02/2021 19:32

I honestly don’t understand why teachers regard themselves to be in a different category to the rest of us. Please explain to me why, exactly?

mondaywine · 07/02/2021 19:32

I haven’t had a working day out of school since we returned in August. I worked full time with my class until December then from the 6th of January I have worked full time with my new class of key worker children. I have also ran the google classroom for the children who are learning from home. No days needing to be made up here. Have already worked considerably more than I am paid for. Maybe I should ask for time back in lieu instead of working more days for free?
