Extending school term at end of July

That's not going to work. Another ridiculous idea. What about all those people that moved their cancelled holidays for 2020 by a year. Summer holidays may go ahead if vaccine roll out happens and who is going to cancel and lose their money - I'm not. Will be lots of absent children.

@FrippEnos

DBML The new years 10, 11, 12 and 13 will all lose out on two weeks of revision and coursework next winter, so they can sit at home, locked in their houses doing nothing.

What will happen if (and its a massive if) this goes ahead is that the those same posters will campaign for the half terms etc. to go back to normal.
After all its the children's results education that is important.

Then they will campaign for the holidays to stay short as it had such a great impact.

And they will expect the teachers to do all of this for no extra money.

Sadly, I think you’re right.

Don't you remember all those bankers that went in to teaching after they fucked the economy but where offered money to do so?

Neither can I.

FrippEnos · 08/02/2021 19:41

TheReluctantPhoenix

Apologies if that comes across wrong, I'm not having a go at you but at the bankers.

DBML · 08/02/2021 19:45

My son is a year 11 and both his dad and I are teachers.

He finishes school at the end of June/start of July. Instead of being able to spend time with him; parents want me to leave him on his own day after day for over a month, so I can work extra to take their children off their hands. We live over 20 miles from his school in a very small place, and he doesn’t drive. He’d literally be stuck in the house waiting for us to finish work.

And it is just childcare, because what can you do in 2 weeks when you’re exhausted and don’t want to be there anyway? Is that what parent’s want? Teachers begrudgingly watching their kids, whilst thinking about the time they could have been having with their own families?

Absolutely meaningless. It won’t happen, but I’m just livid that that’s what the world wants us to do. Like we’re just robots.

We're public servants. Some people think it means they own us.

Remmy123 · 08/02/2021 20:35

@MrsHamlet hmmm bit OTT, no?

The government just mentioned it, no one has asked anyone to do anything! some parents are up for it an some are not = teachers go wild on MN!!!

Get a grip stop acting so hard done by because I do not see any other public sector worker on here complaining.

MrsHamlet · 08/02/2021 20:37

How exactly was I OTT?

Remmy123 · 08/02/2021 20:49

Public servants?
People think they own you

Who are you talking about?!

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/02/2021 20:54

Remmy I'm not seeing any other public servants being constantly degraded, exposed to higher covid risk and having their employment T&Cs fucked with.

Letseatgrandma · 08/02/2021 20:54

@Remmy123

Public servants? People think they own you

Who are you talking about?!

As a teacher I have been screamed at by a parent (who was shortly afterwards removed from the building) that I had to do what he said because he ‘paid my wages’.

It’s that sort of thing.

MrsHamlet · 08/02/2021 20:55

Teachers are public servants. As is anyone employed directly or indirectly from taxation. That's a fact.
Some people think that public servants should be directed to do things well beyond their contractual obligations, often in the guise of "vocation".

I've not "gone wild". I don't need to "get a grip". I'm not complaining. I was stating an opinion.

You, on the other hand, seem extremely angry and upset.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/02/2021 21:04

I do not see any other public sector worker on here complaining.

Now, let me see...

NHS staff - furious in the media, here is a second rate place to complain, they are perfectly right and everyone clapped them
Social workers - at home waiting to be vaccinated
School linked staff like SALTS and EPs - at home waiting to be vaccinated
Officers in local councils - at home, offices often closed completely
Librarians - libraries closed (I can't believe they locked us out!)
MPs - at home, charging us all for their privilege
Central government - at home, or in work being paid big bonuses to be there, or being told that they only need to work 50% if they have kids at home

No one else seems to have much to complain about really.

Remmy123 · 08/02/2021 21:09

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot you forgot the police and prison wardens 😂

Loads of teachers at home right now - I know that because I see them on the screen (at home)

MrsHamlet · 08/02/2021 21:12

Yep. I'm at home teaching my full timetable online because the government closed the schools.
I'm still not complaining though.

DBML · 08/02/2021 21:13

Are you watching them teach from home @Remmy123 ?

Or are you just watching them Confused

DBML · 08/02/2021 21:14

Just trying to establish whether they are working or not, as you watch them.

Remmy123 · 08/02/2021 21:39

Well there was a list of professions listed above with 'at home' on evey line? Implying that all of those are at home so have nothing to complain about. Maybe i in read that wrong.

Oooh that sounds sinister ! 😬

Remmy123 · 08/02/2021 21:42

@DBML errrr I've never said teachers arnt teaching?

Remmy123 · 08/02/2021 21:43

Just to add I see my kids screen at home, my son sits next to me 🤣

callistography · 08/02/2021 21:46

@lunapeace

Private schools will most likely extend their terms (they tend to break up end of June anyway). I can't see this happening in State Schools.
Ha ha ha! No they don't.
Musmerian · 08/02/2021 21:47

@lunapeacei don’t think independent schools will be extending their terms. Ours definitely isn’t and we’ll all be on our knees by the end of the year. It’s actually a really complicated thing to organise even if it was a good idea.

Awalkintime · 08/02/2021 21:47

Given that in September the whole curriculum will need planning well to maximise key learning for all year groups I wonder who will do this?

Won't be teachers if they are babysitting....so next year your children will suffer from a curriculum not fit for their needs because you can't be bothered to pay for childcare.

BunsyGirl · 08/02/2021 22:13

@Musmerian my DC’s private school has extended the summer term by two weeks. They break up in the middle of July instead of the beginning of July.

ChloeDecker · 08/02/2021 22:30

My DH’s GDST private school that he works at is not extending the school year and is in fact shortening it (they are now breaking up for Easter a week earlier than they were)
They are also doing fewer live lessons than my state school.
