Just seen it come on my news feed that there's talks of pubs re opening April with alcohol ban.
Can you really see many going?
I don't go to the pub often. Maybe 3 times a year max for a meal and don't drink anyway but obviously the vast majority of people probably have an alcoholic beverage.

Lots of pubs around here have your regulars that are in there noon till Night supping a few pints, my dsf is one that only goes for a few pints. Would never eat or buy a soft drink.

Would it be a good move?

Who is reporting that? Is it one of the usual suspects?

Redbrickwall · 06/02/2021 10:03

It’s absolutely ridiculous. Like opening a cinema without films. Madness

nancy75 · 06/02/2021 10:05

Most pubs just won’t bother opening under those rules - unless they have a very strong food trade it won’t be worth it.
When pubs had to serve a substantial meal lots stayed closed rather than open at a loss.

Grooticle · 06/02/2021 10:07

To be fair, we’d go to a pub with no alcohol. We go often to pubs that have beer gardens/climbing frames in particular. Nice food, space for the kids to run around. It’s basically just treating them like cafes and restaurants, fine to open and serve food. The reality is people don’t social distance if they’re out drinking!

AhGoGo · 06/02/2021 10:07

They won’t open.
Happened in Scotland with the 6pm curfew, many chose not to open. It’s impossible to even cover the overheads.

Cornettoninja · 06/02/2021 10:07

Pubs with food, yes, but pubs focussed on alcohol only are really going to suffer, I can’t see many that don’t serve food reopening if they have the option to keep their staff furloughed.

As an aside I really worry about the loss of the ‘old man’ pubs. There aren’t many social meeting places left any more and there’s a huge gap in society for mostly older men who don’t socialise within their community anywhere else. There aren’t many places you can walk into at any time and just have a chat with someone. My df’s local is now a co-op and he doesn’t really have anywhere to go now iyswim. He’s not really a day centre type...

There was also the usual suspects that reported it yesterday

One of the most ridiculous things I've read during this virus. I wouldn't go to a pub if I couldn't have a glass of wine. Even for a meal. I'm not a big pub goer, but I'm dreaming of the day when I can sit in a pub garden again with a glass of wine and a packet of crisps.

RosesAndLemonade · 06/02/2021 10:10

I'd go.

IsitSummeryet21 · 06/02/2021 10:10

Yes that's what many pubs here are like. Within 5 miles of me there's 2 spoons and rest 'old man back street boozers'
Although at least 4 of these I know have stayed open. Covered windows and use the back doors etc. And I know this first hand as dsf uses them every day from work. ( well mums partner but easier to explain dsf, and no I don't agree I don't even like him haha)

I'd go for a nice meal, not fussed about the alcohol aspect

LApprentiSorcier · 06/02/2021 10:12

I only go to the pub for a meal, nowadays. I like an alcoholic drink alongside my meal but I'd go for a meal without alcohol. I don't think in the days when I went to the pub and drank beer, I'd have gone and drunk soft drinks instead.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/02/2021 10:12

At this rate the only pubs left will be wetherspoons and similar chains.

Mudmudingloriousmud · 06/02/2021 10:15

I cant understand this but what I wish they would make LAW is all pubs and restaurants must keep windows open or ventilate on the hour.

I went to a few before lock downs and I was in hot stuffy rooms with no one opening a window at all - mind boggling...

Why not keep alcohol but stipulate VERY clearly - you MUST by law have at least one window open per xxxx sq foot - or and - ventilate fully every hour....

Cornettoninja · 06/02/2021 10:18

Depending on what the rules are for meeting people outside the home pubs might be a more appealing option for people just wanting somewhere to meet others - basically using them as extra cafe’s. That doesn’t mean pubs can afford to open and run as cafes though
CoronaIsWatching · 06/02/2021 10:19

Sounds like a way for the gov't to cease financial support to these businesses. Pubs wont open because they will make a loss but the gov't will say no ones stopping you from opening

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/02/2021 10:20

No.I’m not sitting there nursing a lemonade.

What’s the point?

Bluntness100 · 06/02/2021 10:20

No, but not just becayse of the booze ban.

We went in the summer and it was shit, no bar service, you are seated at a table and isolated from others, by a plastic screen. No atmosphere, just seated, eat your meal, leave, you may as well be at home with a takeaway.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 06/02/2021 10:24

We have some amazing gastropubs near us who are doing delivery/takeaway. I would just keep ordering this way if such a nonsensical rule came into force. I like a glass or two of wine with a lovely supper, not mineral water.

ForeverBubblegum · 06/02/2021 10:27

In normal times I wouldn't, but if we're still banned from visiting peoples houses it might be better option then more cold rainy walks. Yes you could go to a cafe, but if numbers are limited to allow for SD, and everyone is looking for a public venue to meet in, they would be another option.

Delatron · 06/02/2021 10:27

No and if they do this (after pubs already chucking away ££££ in beer) then most likely it will be the death of many pubs and that will be a shame.

It’s getting a bit tiring being treated like a small child who can’t be trusted after a few glasses of wine. Agree about ventilation being more important.

They could all close for a few hours between sittings to air the rooms too.

Daisysflowers · 06/02/2021 10:27

I read this last night and honestly think it’s one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard!
Really can not understand why pubs/restaurants have taken the brunt of the lockdowns, I felt safer in them then walking around the shops where anyone can stand right on top of you. In pubs/restaurants i was sat at a table that had been spaced out away from others. Crazy that this industry has been treated the way they have.

If the rumours are true and they do let them open but don’t allow them to sell alcohol then I can’t see many opening up in April some even shutting down for good. Have a sneaky feeling that if this goes ahead the government will not help fund them as they are told they can open but are choosing not to open. Angry

All pubs/restaurants should be allowed to reopen as normal as soon as shops open.

borntohula · 06/02/2021 10:28

Totally pointless.

Bluntness100 · 06/02/2021 10:32

People will smuggle their own booze in. And landlords wont stop them. People will be pouring vodka or gin into their soft drinks. It will be the ultimate cheap night out and worse if the landlords were controlling it

There is also nothing to stop people drinking at home, then going to the pub a bit pissed, bringing their own booze, drinking it outside or pouring it into their mixers, it would be a mess.

It’s one of the most ludicrous ideas I’ve heard.

HairyFloppins · 06/02/2021 10:32

I'd go for a meal but I do like a nice pint with my dinner.

Can't see how pubs will be able to sustain this.
