Can't get temp to go down after the vaccine

guiltynetter · 06/02/2021 07:24

I had the covid vaccine (Oxford) Thursday night and have been really ill since. Had to come home from work due to shivering then sweating. I've had a temp of 39.5 since yesterday and it's not going down with regular paracetamol or ibuprofen. I just feel so poorly I could cry. Everything hurts and I'm not often ill, I'd say I was quite tough! Has anybody else had these side effects and do I just ride it out?

This is not an anti vax post I still believe everyone should have it but I never imagined to feel like this :(

My dad was the same for 3-4 days.

RosesAndLemonade · 06/02/2021 07:26

There have been a lot of posts like this OP so hopefully you'll feel right as rain soon . There have been a lot of things I've read about nhs workers having it and saying like you they've been absolutely floored.
I hope you feel better soon. No advice I'm afraid but try keep hydrated!

Cupcakegirl13 · 06/02/2021 07:27

Have you had a covid test ?

guiltynetter · 06/02/2021 07:32

Thank you I am an NHS worker. I was really undecided about the jab and I'm trying to make myself feel better by thinking this is probably better than getting covid... 😳

I haven't had a covid test as when I had the jab they specifically said if you get a temp within 2 days of the vaccine you don't need to have a covid test as it will be caused by that.

If I could just get my temperature to come down I know I'd feel better, I'm thinking of having a cold shower or something 😞

Oh you poor thing, hopefully this will pass soon!! If it doesn’t pass today though I would book a Covid test. If you’re in healthcare you could have well caught it at the same time. It does no harm to know.
If it’s not void then take comfort in the fact that Flu like symptoms after a vaccine are a sign your immune system has kicked in in response and is making all those amazing antibodies!

BaggoMcoys · 06/02/2021 07:44

The same hapoened to my relative and her arm swelled up, but it passed. I'm sure yours will pass too. It sounds horrible. I'm glad we have a vaccine but I'm not looking forward to this. Spend the day in bed and rest if you can. Flowers

Moondust001 · 06/02/2021 07:46

This is a known reaction. Unfortunately, our bodies are still "fresh" when it comes to this particular coronavirus, so they are prone to a more extreme reaction to building antibodies. Evidence suggest that at most there will be 2-3 days of feeling under the weather if you are unlucky enough to get the worst reaction.

There is also some evidence, although it isn't conclusive, that people who may have had the virus already may get a more extreme reaction.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 06/02/2021 07:47

Just keep taking the paracetamol and rest up. We were told to give 111 a call if a temperature persisted much beyond 48h.

Also, keep reminding yourself that your body is currently on important antibody-making business and if you reacted to the vaccine this much, imagine how horrible actual Covid would be. Smile

Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

All very normal. Get well soon.

Froggie456 · 06/02/2021 07:48

@guiltynetter I don’t think that’s government advice about not testing - in fact it’s the opposite. Maybe for a “mild temp”, but 39.5 is high. you need to get a test. As an nhs worker I would say it’s probably more likely to be an illness like Covid rather then a side effect.

ThornAmongstRoses · 06/02/2021 07:50

When I had my vaccine on Thursday I was told that if I got a temperature it was nothing to worry about unless it persisted for 48 hours or more. I was told if that was the case I needed to phone my GP to discuss it with them (she said it dan be a sign of reacting to the vaccine) and to also get a Covid Test.

This was the Pfeizer though so advice may be different get seen brands.

ThornAmongstRoses · 06/02/2021 07:51

between brands.

Froggie456 · 06/02/2021 07:51

OP just read PHE leaflet. As I thought feeling feverish is not an issue a high temp is. Go and get tested.

Can't get temp to go down after the vaccine
hashbrownsandwich · 06/02/2021 07:58

@guiltynetter I was literally coming on here to search for the same thing. Has mine yesterday at 2pm, felt fine but woke up at 2am with severe chills, sweating like an absolute pig, drunk 4 pint of water, wrapped oh king size duvet but still couldn't get warm. Now I'm the other extreme, I am burning up, headache, feel like I need to vomit which isn't something I was expecting. My lungs are on fire.
I too am NHS and wanted to have it in the hope it would help stop the spread.
As you say, I'm hoping this is the better alternative to having the virus.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 06/02/2021 08:00

That’s odd. The Information for HCPs for both vaccines lists high temperature (pyrexia) as a common side effect experienced between 1in 100 and 1 in 10 people.

Can’t do any harm and could do much good to get a test anyway.

RuggeryBuggery · 06/02/2021 08:01

My colleague declined the vaccine a couple of weeks ago because he wasn’t sure about it/didn’t trust it.
Now he’s in hospital with covid and has developed pneumonia, so sad 😞

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 06/02/2021 08:02

Oh and please yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/ your adverse reactions everyone.

guiltynetter · 06/02/2021 08:26

Very conflicting information! It was a doctor who gave me my vaccine and they specifically said about getting a temperature so that PHE leaflet is confusing. I spoke to my matron and he said I must get a test before I go back.to work (I work with complex needs children) so I'll get one. It won't show up positive cos I've had the jab will it?!

Thanks for the link to the thread of other people's reactions it has reassured me that it's sort of normal.

@RuggeryBuggery that's so sad. I think it takes 3 weeks to work though the jab so unfortunately he might still have got it :( a friend at work had the vaccine and got covid 2 weeks later, she's been very poorly but not hospitalised.

My friend had her vaccine and just over two weeks later she tested positive and so did her husband (both early 50s). My friend was ill for about a week but was ok, whereas her husband sadly died within 7 days of getting his positive result. So very, very sad.

smoothchange · 06/02/2021 08:39

My aunt had this. She had covid.

She had been routinely tested through work the day before her vaccine. Started feeling unwell, put it down to side affects, 3 days later got her result back and it was positive!

justsayso · 06/02/2021 08:40

I had mine on Thursday this week and yesterday I was absolutely awful, so lethargic and feverish, it got worse in the evening I had shooting aches in my arms and legs, coughing, hot/cold shivers, I was looking online to see if I had caught covid it was so bad.
Then at about 10pm yesterday it passed and I feel okay today, my arm aches but I think the worst is over.

userxx · 06/02/2021 08:42

Same thing happened to my friend, took about 5 days for her to feel ok.

Froggie456 · 06/02/2021 08:49

@guiltynetter the Covid tests test for antigens, so having the vaccine won’t impact the test.
