Can't get temp to go down after the vaccine

I had the covid vaccine (Oxford) Thursday night and have been really ill since. Had to come home from work due to shivering then sweating. I've had a temp of 39.5 since yesterday and it's not going down with regular paracetamol or ibuprofen. I just feel so poorly I could cry. Everything hurts and I'm not often ill, I'd say I was quite tough! Has anybody else had these side effects and do I just ride it out?

This is not an anti vax post I still believe everyone should have it but I never imagined to feel like this :(

I don’t think it’s particularly alarming to be experiencing a temperature/symptoms 48-72hrs after a covid vaccination but I would absolutely encourage you to seek reassurance and see no harm in getting a test.

Parkandride · 06/02/2021 09:11

My dad felt rotten like this for 2-3 days, hopefully by tomorrow you'll be on the mend OP

I was told when I got my AZ jab that running a bit warm for a day or so could safely be considered a side effect

A very high temperature or one which persisted however should not be considered a side effect (even if with hindsight it proves to be the likeliest explanation) and you should get a test

IMO as high as 39.5 is definitely one to test

Haenow · 06/02/2021 10:13

I think it’s worth getting a test, to be honest. I’ve heard of a few people who tested positive right after the jab.

hardyloveit · 06/02/2021 10:15

I was told not to use ibuprofen after the jab. Just paracetamol.
The lady did explain it (bit like chicken pox and ibuprofen)

DishedUp · 06/02/2021 10:20

This is how I felt, just had to drink plenty of water and take regular paracetamol. Mine lasted for about 36 hrs

I did test as test regularly with work anyway and was negative. 39.5 is a really high temperature though and you should test to be on the safe side

starfro · 06/02/2021 10:26

I felt flu-like about 12hrs after the jab, but better within another 12-24 hours (AZ).

Given that 500k are getting vaccinated a day, and maybe 1 in 100 has the virus, thousands of people will be getting a vaccine whilst being infected and so will be having genuine Covid symptoms. Just the effect of large numbers.

guiltynetter · 07/02/2021 07:12

So after feeling so poorly I woke up this morning my temperature has gone and I feel much better, just tired. I can't believe how ill I felt compared to how I feel today.

I'll remember to book the next dose on a day that I'm not working 🙈

They should revise the PHE leaflet as a high temp above 38 degrees IS a common side effect of the Oxford vaccine

The pack information is the responsibility of the manufacturer, and of course they have to include all the info that the medicines regulator of the country requires (MHRA - PHE and equivalents don't have lead role on this). Info leaflets all on line these days, which is handy if you've lost your own copy from the pack. To make it even easier, the government has put the ones for covid vaccines on the gov.uk website as well

Fever is already listed as a common side effect

I hate to say this, but I had a temperature after my jab.

I did have a test, and I tested positive.

I don’t know if I was asymptomatic before the jab and the jab tipped me over or what. I went right back to being asymptomatic - just one afternoon of high temperature.

I was horrified - I’m frontline NHS too and feel so guilty for possibly having been an asymptomatic spreader.

Mindymomo · 07/02/2021 09:16

@Purplewithred. You did your best, that’s all you can do, you got a test when you felt you needed to, due to high temperature.

@guiltynetter. Glad you are feeling better.

Frazzled2207 · 07/02/2021 09:47

It’s rubbish that you were told that if you got a temp within 48 hours it “must” be the vaccine. Of course you could catch covid immediately before having it and present symptoms at the time when you would have been having side effects from the vaccine.

I would get a Covid test if I were you. And i hope you feel better soon. My nurse friend had exactly the same after her (Pfizer) vaccine, got a covid test which was negative, but after 48h was much better.

Sorry just seen your update pleased you are feeling much better today.
