A significant number are now ok with restrictions remaining indefinitely

Firstly, this is NOT making any judgement either way, simply an observation. It seems to me from reactions on here and publically in general that there are a significant and possibly growing number of people who would not be discontent with restrictions at the level they are in place at the moment continuing indefinitely.

OP posts:
Sillysop92 · 04/02/2021 14:09

Who are these people? Everyone I know can’t wait to meet up and start having fun again! It won’t be this side of EASTER but I expect to go on holiday in the Summer and visit Family and friends by May and go to the pub! I expect there will be certain restrictions like rule of 6 but things are going to be much more relaxed than they are now! Can’t bloody wait! 🍻🍻 if people want to hide away from life forever even with the majority of us vaccinated then it’s up to them but don’t stop the rest of us getting on with life and fun!

Tal45 · 04/02/2021 14:12

It depends what you mean by indefinitely I guess. I want everyone vaccinated asap, before that I don't think there can be much normal.

Mulletonyourhead · 04/02/2021 14:18

This is dangerous talk. No one I know wants this?!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/02/2021 14:22

No one I know is.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/02/2021 14:23

And I do judge people who want restrictions to go on indefinitely because everyone is free to live their life like this if they want, but wanting to force everyone else to do it too is selfish.

Lurkingforawhile · 04/02/2021 14:24

The only bit I know some people would like is people washing hands more, and a bit (small bit) of extra spaces in queues etc. Because it's nasty having a person coughing and sneezing right down your neck! Everyone I know is looking forward to something different including travel, seeing family, hugs, gigs and (for me) going swimming! No one is happy with the current situation.

I note OP mentioned a survey - what was the exact question? It makes such a difference

AIMD · 04/02/2021 14:25

Really? I don’t know anyone who would be happy to be in lockdown Indefinatly.

Is this your friends your basing it on? Or media?

Moneyfornothingkerbsforfree · 04/02/2021 14:26

Only on mumsnet 🙄

MaxNormal · 04/02/2021 14:27

I'm perfectly ok with doing my bit to stop people dying when they don't need to.

But people die unecessarily in their millions globally. Millions of babies and children under five die due to poverty and preventable illnesses.
Most people don't give a shiny shit, they maybe have a little cry and chuck a tenner in at Comic Relief then go back to their lives.

People are only complying with lockdown as it affects them personally, they're either scared for themselves or older relatives.

So don't give me that altruism crap, that's not the reason at all.

Bluntness100 · 04/02/2021 14:27

I think it depends on your defintjon of significant.

Yes of course a “significant” amount of people have mental health issues and would like the restrictions to remain, so they can stay locked up and not feel odd.

This doesn’t mean that significant amount of people are the majority. It’s a tiny percentage I’d suspect.

Jaxhog · 04/02/2021 14:27

I think many of us will be cautious, but most people are really looking forward to being able to meet safely. I don't know anyone who wants the restrictions to continue.

JovialNickname · 04/02/2021 14:29

I agree, there's a significant proportion of people that would be happy if lockdown went on indefinitely. They feel this "makes them safe" and anything that isn't lockdown makes them dangerously unsafe. This might be true for the small proportion of people that are seriously at risk of covid but haven't been vaccinated yet, but is a disproportionate risk response for the rest of us.

The sad fact is that this government appears, from their previous responses, to be extremely reactionary; and bases its knee jerk policies on the views of those that shriek their fear the loudest; ignoring the moderate, concerned about the current level of restrictions, mostly quiet majority.

In a way I understand - the government have done a very good job with their IF YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE YOU WILL DIE!!!! OR KILL SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU'RE WITHIN THE 95 + % OF PEOPLE THAT WILL BARELY BE ILL IF AT ALL!! rhetoric. It really isn't surprising that people are scared, and think that permanent lockdown is the solution, given it's all that's been forced down their throat for the last year.

Bluntness100 · 04/02/2021 14:30

Op are you one of the peoooe who would like them to stay so you’re looking to see if others are like you?

MarshaBradyo · 04/02/2021 14:32

No I doubt it

MarshaBradyo · 04/02/2021 14:33

Do you know a lot of people not in private sector op?

TimeForLunch · 04/02/2021 14:35

I do not think this is the case at all. Those people are simply more vocal.

Hardbackwriter · 04/02/2021 14:35

I think you're putting a lot too much weight on the vocal people on MN who hate most of the people they know/all social situations but are too weak-willed and pathetic to actually just arrange their life in a way that suits them, and so who love lockdown solving this for them. These people never shut up on MN, but they're not a large proportion of the population...

MarshaBradyo · 04/02/2021 14:38

There’s a lot of posters on mn who can lockdown indefinitely and still have job security. Or think they will.

They just happen to post more and it’s not the majority view.

Look to how MPs vote for a better indicator

TableFlowerss · 04/02/2021 14:39

Well considering on the news right now, they’re saying that schools are looking likely to reopen March 8th so it’s looking good.

Plus they’ve vaccinated 1/6 people in the UK so we’re on the right track!

Some people that are quite reclusive by nature will ha e enjoyed aspects of the lockdown, I’ve no doubt. The majority haven’t.

Roll on summer time

I could not and will not deliberately flout restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of a virus that will prematurely kill people.

You seem to be suggesting that because others die unnecessarily it's ok for hundreds more to.

loulouljh · 04/02/2021 14:41

I don't think thats right..even those friends who have been scared to death are fed up now and want normality. I don't know anyone who wants this to continue.

I completely agree. It drove me mad on the Christmas threads when you got people saying how wonderful it was to have restrictions because they hate having a big family Christmas or their MIL or whatever. They could have stopped doing Christmas in the way they disliked at any previous point in their adult life, but no, they were apparently waiting for a pandemic to come along and sort it for them.
Suamino · 04/02/2021 14:44

There are advantages and disadvantages of this way of life. I don't miss seeing work colleagues & all the office bullshit that goes on. Some people invest too much energy in workplace relationships. You can lose perspective. I'm quite happy working from home, I get the job done, simple. I don't miss rushing around at Christmas trying to see every relative under the sun. Staying at home and having a quiet family Christmas was great this year.

Do miss being able to go out for a meal sometimes. And I miss my parents. Would like to be able to see some close friends, go down the pub for evening drinks like we used to. Defiantly miss the pub!

I generally find life a lot simpler like this though. It's cleared a lot of superfluous clutter away. I'm probably in the minority though, I'm not keen on having to see lots of people everyday, and I hate loud, noisy crowded places.

MaxNormal · 04/02/2021 14:44

No, i just don't understand why people are prepared to sacrifice so much to prevent covid deaths but not other (arguably more) preventable deaths.
Actually I do understand. Because it affects them personally.
That's fine but please stop trying to pass it off as altruism.
