Getting GP to amend vaccination group

Rillington · 03/02/2021 19:13

I had to call my GP for something today. While I was on the phone I asked what group my DH would be in. The receptionist said he would be group 8 by age.

I explained he should be group 6 because he has heart issues. She said there was nothing she could do.

I am CEV and worried about my DH getting it and passing it on to me.

Should I persevere with the GP or contact my husband's consultant?

Thank you

And surely they should not, under data protection, be discussing it with anyone else, even his spouse

Absolutely this. My GP wouldn’t let me speak on behalf of my teenager as she’s over 16. We had an absolute bugger getting her added to the shielding list. Her consultants said she absolutely should be but there was a breakdown in communication somewhere along the way between them and the GP.

Rillington · 03/02/2021 19:47

Due to my DH's working hours and where he works he has a note on his file for me to talk to them. He had to give written permission.

In case OP missed my previous post, or for others interested, this is the link to the Green Book chapter on Covid vaccines, page 9 has the list of qualifying conditions for group 6 which the GP system will be using.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-the-green-book-chapter-14a

Rillington · 03/02/2021 19:51

Thank you @RagsReturnsRebooted He had a heart attack a few years ago. He was fitted with some stents and they found he has a hereditary heart condition. I don't know if that will qualify him

My daughter has a congenital heart defect and that doesn’t qualify her for shielding group. It’s her chronic lung condition that puts her in that group.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 03/02/2021 19:59

So, looking at the list again...

"Congenital heart disease, hypertension with cardiac complications, chronic
heart failure, individuals requiring regular medication and/or follow-up for
ischaemic heart disease. This includes individuals with atrial fibrillation,
peripheral vascular disease or a history of venous thromboembolism."

I'd say, possibly? My cardiology knowledge isn't great, so may well be worth getting the GP to check if his history qualifies.

Rillington · 03/02/2021 19:59

I THINK A LOT OF POSTERS ARE GETTING CONFUSED. I DON'T THINK HE SHOULD BE IN THE SHIELDING GROUP. I THINK HE SHOULD BE IN GROUP 6.

OP posts:
MRex · 03/02/2021 19:59

@Rillington - congenital heart disease is highlighted by British Heart Foundation as being in that group 6. See here: "Coronavirus vaccine: your questions answered | BHF" www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/news/coronavirus-and-your-health/coronavirus-vaccine-your-questions-answered#whichconditions.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 03/02/2021 20:02

I know hereditary isn't the same as Congenital though. If his agents mean his heart is functioning fine now, he may well not be considered higher risk. Many of the heart conditions listed are considered higher risk due to the link with covid and risk of blood clots. His risk may be no higher than anyone else's.

Being CEV yourself you must be in group 4 and getting yours well before he would anyway?

RagzReturnsRebooted · 03/02/2021 20:03

Stents, not agents!

MRex · 03/02/2021 20:05

Oh for goodness sake. The man had a heart attack, he fits on the list if you'd just read it.

mollypuss1 · 03/02/2021 20:06

@Rillington

I THINK A LOT OF POSTERS ARE GETTING CONFUSED. I DON'T THINK HE SHOULD BE IN THE SHIELDING GROUP. I THINK HE SHOULD BE IN GROUP 6.
Err two people who were both corrected ...
Rillington · 03/02/2021 20:07

@MRex I did read the list thank you. Any need for your aggression?

What Aggression?

If you think he’s on the list to be in group 6 ring his doctor tomorrow and see what they say. It’ll either be an explanation as to why your wrong or a Thankyou for bringing it to their attention. Job done and no need for all this drama.

Beaniecats · 03/02/2021 20:11

I didn't realise, I have epilepsy so looks like I am group 6. I had no idea

Rillington · 03/02/2021 20:11

@mollypuss1 I did exactly that today. They refused to change his group. There is no drama.

So he’s not in group 6.

mollypuss1 · 03/02/2021 20:16

Hang on, I’ve just reread, you said you spoke with the receptionist? Have you actually spoke with his GP?

RagzReturnsRebooted · 03/02/2021 20:18

@Beaniecats

I didn't realise, I have epilepsy so looks like I am group 6. I had no idea
DH has bipolar so he should be too, we haven't checked as he isn't that bothered. If he gets called, he'll have it.
Rillington · 03/02/2021 20:20

@mollypuss1 To do that I need to get past the receptionist who said they were unable to change the group. It cannot be done she said.

OP posts:
Bagelsandbrie · 03/02/2021 20:22

Surely if you’re in the cev group (as I am too) you’ll have your vaccine first - very soon, if not now, I’ve had mine today- so you’ll be protected first anyway? (You said you’re worried about your dh giving it to you).

mollypuss1 · 03/02/2021 20:27

@Rillington so ring back tomorrow and ask to speak to or get a call back from a doctor.

Crumpetycrump · 03/02/2021 20:32

I see that group 6 includes history of thromboembolism- does anyone know if that includes pulmonary embolism? I’m in group 9 and wondered if I should be in group 6? Sorry for the hijack.

Shrivelled · 03/02/2021 20:42

OP I 100% get your frustration, I should clearly be in group 6 but was met by a wall of rudeness by my GP receptionist who said I wasn’t coded to have it then. I think they’re just told to shut down the vaccine conversations as there’s nothing they can do. I eventually spoke to my GP who confirmed I hadn’t been coded to group 6 even though by the “green book” list I qualify. Honestly I didn’t get a straight answer so if you can get a carer’s code for your husband I would. There seems to be a fair bit of confusion at my GP surgery about the nuances of group 6 coding. I’m going to try and contact them again nearer the group 6 roll out time and try then, but for now I hit a brick wall! I hope you have better luck than I did.

ExpulsoCorona · 03/02/2021 20:45

@crumpetycrump yes, history of pulmonary embolism falls in group 6 according to that list
