Does having coeliac disease put you into group 6?

MyBossIsATwat · 03/02/2021 14:22

About 1/3 of people who have coeliac disease have reduced spleen function but most coeliacs don’t know if they do or don’t as it’s not routinely tested.

On the gov website it says ‘a problem with your spleen, example sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed’ would put you into group 6, but does anyone have access to more information to know if they’re including coeliacs in this or not?

Thanks.

Just wanted to update @MyBossIsATwat that I have received an invite to book my vaccine today and now have it scheduled for next weekend. I am 37 and apart from being coeliac have no other health conditions, I’m in Sheffield, who I believe are doing better than some other areas with the vaccine rollout

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 12/02/2021 15:53

That’s brilliant news Wine

Congratulations! That’s brilliant news.

I just wish I knew how my area is doing. Can I ask how do you know that Sheffield seems to be doing better, is it just word of mouth?

I am basing that purely on what my local mom had published on his Facebook page, a couple of weeks ago they diverted some of the vaccines from Sheffield to other regions as we were ahead and he was very vocal about it, this was the link in the article that showed vaccines by area, hopefully it will work

Wejustdontknow · 12/02/2021 17:07

Mp not mom

JustAnotherBrick · 12/02/2021 17:09

Mine is scheduled for tomorrow and I am coeliac. I don’t think anything else I have would have triggered it.

I'm in the NE (so same region as far as the NHS is concerned) and saw the same report - here. Scotland was way behind in it's vaccination of over 80s, I know the SNP got a lot of abuse for it, they claimed they were concentrating on care home residents but the majority of those are over 80. This is obviously a few weeks old now.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/02/2021 17:28

its

UntamedWisteria · 12/02/2021 17:33

DS who is 22 & coeliac asked the GP about this today (he had to speak to them about another issue).

He said he's currently in group 6 but apparently its under review as young coeliacs are at a lower risk than older ones.

Great to hear that others have their appointments though.

Thank you for posting this

Remmy123 · 12/02/2021 19:38

I can't believe a gluten allergy wouid put you up the list

PegLegAntoine · 12/02/2021 19:54

It’s more related to the fact it’s classed as an autoimmune condition I would assume.

MyBossIsATwat · 12/02/2021 20:04

Coeliac disease isn’t a gluten allergy. It’s an autoimmune disorder.

dogsaremypeople · 12/02/2021 20:26

@Remmy123 get your facts straight before you start moaning! It's not a fucking allergy

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 12/02/2021 21:33

"Gluten allergy" Hmm

Don't comment on stuff you don't understand maybe?!

PollyRoulson · 12/02/2021 21:49

Adults with coeliac disease may have reduced spleen function (hyposplenism) which is a very high risk factor to serious disease with Covid.

Remmy123 · 12/02/2021 23:10

@dogsaremypeople not moaning - trust me, I'm in NO hurry to get vaccinated.

Remmy123 · 12/02/2021 23:14

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady I have family members who are celiac so I do know.

Celiacs are not at any higher risk than any one else of becoming seriously ill if you are following strict gluten free diet.

ZaZathecat · 12/02/2021 23:23

Many coeliacs have the condition for years before being diagnosed and a lot of damage has already been done. This is the case for me and most other coeliacs I know.

Covidcorvid · 12/02/2021 23:27

That’s not true.

Why do you think you get a flu jab every year if you’re coeliac? Because you’re more at risk of being seriously ill from flu!

Why do you think the govt have put coeliacs in group 6? Because if they get covid they may be more at risk of being ill.

Coeliac disease can cause issues with spleen function and anyone with coeliac could be one of those with impaired spleen function and you would know....until you’re more seriously affected by an infection/virus.

Covidcorvid · 12/02/2021 23:28

And it’s an auto immune disease....not a “gluten allergy”.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 12/02/2021 23:43

Coeliac is not a gluten allergy. It can have far reaching consequences that are not the same as an allergy.

To the PP who linked the green book advice, thank you. Strangely throughout this my asthma is what I e been told to be careful for but it may be the stroke I had that gets me into group 6. Which is odd as stroke/tia sufferers haven't been told they're vulnerable.

No, you don't know.
FFS do some research before spouting off! Autoimmune disorder not allergy. Go have a look at refractory celiac disease, diet doesn't work for all. And ZaZa's point is spot on for most with celiac's disease as well.

UntamedWisteria · 13/02/2021 09:07

Jeez, can't believe people are trolling on here about something as serious as coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease puts you at higher risk of cancer, and other life threatening illnesses.

And sticking to a strictly gluten-free diet is much harder than you might think - because we often can't control everything we eat.

noraclavicle · 13/02/2021 10:38

Thanks for the heads-up OP. I texted my sister last night to check if my niece (in the NE) knew about this and by coincidence she’s just had a call from the GP offer the vaccine! My daughter has coeliac disease too but she’s under 16 so won’t be on the list.

And to the poster who - despite apparently having coeliac family members still thinks it’s just an ‘allergy’ you haven’t been paying much attention. I really hope your relatives are better-informed. Once more, it’s an AUTO-IMMUNE DISEASE
