This clap for Captain Tom idea

I've just seen a lot on social media about this clap for Tom on Thursday at 8, similar to the clap for the NHS.

I'm a bit ambivalent about this. The one organised the other week was a damp squib and nobody got involved. The weather is still dark and cold (it wasn't in the summer when the pots and pans were out for the NHS). However, for a nation in mourning at Tom's passing, perhaps this could help really bring the country together on Thursday.

This whole thing is way out of hand now. The hypocrisy of Boris and chums .....

Absolutely this.

I like the idea of clapping the scientists. I think they are doing a bloody awesome job and are pretty much unrecognised in this.

If this was a round of applause for Tom and the scientists for thanking rhem for what they did, it would be better received.

I think what Tom Moore did is great, and it is very sad he has died, but I think it’s a bit much. Yes it was lovely he did a hundred laps of his garden, and it caught the public imagination and went viral, but I think maybe it’s getting a bit hysterical and over thr top. Maybe I’m just a hard hearted bitch though.

Seriouslymole · 03/02/2021 12:22

The BBC have reported it correctly have they? Are we sure it's "Boris is leading the clap" rather than "Boris has the clap"?

ThelmaNotLouise · 03/02/2021 12:23

Oh thank god I've found this thread! I thought it was only me who thinks the clapping is taking things too far. I've just watched the minute's silence agog. Where was that last week when we hit 100,000 deaths?! I don't begrudge Captain Tom being honoured for his incredible fundraising feat and I'm very sorry he died from the virus, but in January we lost two very dear family friends to Covid, a married couple in their 80s who died within 11 days of one another. Both died alone with no family at their bedside. Both lived full lives contributing enormously to their community. ALL the victims need to be remembered, not just one.

needadvice54321 · 03/02/2021 12:23

No thanks, instead I'm grieving for my lovely fil who died 2 hours before the Capt Tom announcement yesterday. Just another one added to the statistics Sad

BananaPop2020 · 03/02/2021 12:25

@motherrunner honestly, it is utterly nauseating and so transparent. I just cannot bear to get sucked into this entire circus and I will not do so. It is tacky and disrespectful.

JaimeLeeCurtains · 03/02/2021 12:26

According to some twat of an MP in the commons just now, TM 'was an inspiration to each and every one of us'.

Competitive cheerleading.

If I hear one more mention of clapping I swear I will stand outside my front door with no clothes on and pour something smelly over my head, I’m cracking up over this shit. And that’s really saying something I have severe pain due to an accident and have just recovered from a bad bout of covid, it effected my family so badly my 19 year old was hospitalised, seriously need to worry about paying the nurses a descent wage or we won’t have many left.

TheFairyCaravan · 03/02/2021 12:29

@storminabuttercup

Apparently Johnson will be leading a clap tonight at 6. Utterly ridiculous.
I’ll be washing up.

Captain Tom did a good thing, however this is all getting out of hand now.

trying29 · 03/02/2021 12:29

I agree fully.
It’s shameful how the government seemed to have forgotten already how many have died.
Yes - captain Tom did a great thing last year but it’s a bit over the top

Rosehip10 · 03/02/2021 12:29

The whole Captain Tom thing is a vulgar PR construct - not his intention/fault persoanlly I'm sure, but that is what it became and continues to be so.

ChocOrange1 · 03/02/2021 12:35

@RickiTarr

A statue is a great idea.
Statues cost a fortune. I'm sure Sir Tom would prefer that money went to a worthy cause rather than a statue
AttilaTheMeerkat · 03/02/2021 12:35

The late Mr Moore deserves more dignity in death than some people clapping on a doorstep. That to me is virtue signalling.

needadvice54321 · 03/02/2021 12:38

Exactly @ChocOrange1 !!

TheChip · 03/02/2021 12:43

I thought it was just me. It popped up on my phone earlier and I just rolled my eyes and thought "not this shit again"

Completely disgusting that they can even suggest it, when many many others have died too. But this one...this one causes a nation to be in mourning 🙄

BeaSmithers · 03/02/2021 12:44

It's a no from me

Unsure33 · 03/02/2021 12:44

for all of those who keep repeating the same things - IF a hospital or care home know it is likely end of life - family are allowed to visit ( with covid protection) The rules on that changed quite a while ago . Obviously sometimes they might not know . But it is bad to be repeating things that are not true.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 03/02/2021 12:45

Precisely ChocOrange.

I would hope that the foundation not too long ago set up in his name is properly run and made accountable going forward. That would be a far more lasting legacy than a statue.

grapewine · 03/02/2021 12:47

This! It's all political and a distraction. Actually bizarre.

CoteFolie · 03/02/2021 12:47

I'm grateful for the sanity on this thread.

Lovely man who was well intentioned but the reaction has been massively manipulated by politicians and media.

The same people who are hard at work trying to ignore the other over 100,000 lives that have been lost.

But it's not happening as standard. Thousands are still dying alone or as their families watch over FaceTime. So telling people they are repeating untruths when they've lost loved ones that way isn't very helpful.
Graciebobcat · 03/02/2021 12:48

I think the biggest show of appreciation for Captain Tom would be quiet reflection and gratitude and to raise another £40m for charity

I think the biggest show of appreciation for Captain Tom would be a pay rise for nurses and for the NHS to be properly funded by the government from now on, rather than gradually broken down to be sold off to people like Dido Harding.

So that no other 100 year old men have to walk round their garden all summer to raise CHARITY money for something which is an ACTUAL FUCKING PUBLIC SERVICE
