Sad news just announced - he has died today.

@Whatever9999 it is absolutely possible and in fact very common to have an emotional connection without knowing someone personally, that person may represent something to you, or have a strong association for you, and that is what is happening here. It is not fake and it’s pretty upsetting that you would accuse people of lying when you admit you don’t understand, which is obviously not your fault if you are autistic, but you don’t need to understand something to respect that other people feel differently from you.

Just seen on the news there were some flags at half mast, didn’t see where. A nice mark of respect though.

UnityUnited · 02/02/2021 17:47

I’m sure the daughter who Captain Tom doesn’t live with would have preferred to see her dad in person, other than over FaceTime.

crowsfeet57 · 02/02/2021 17:48

Sad, sad news.

Jakadaal · 02/02/2021 17:48

'@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe' we were one of those families unable to say goodbye properly by being with my DF. I feel cheated and angry but it is nice to know that this gentleman died surrounded by his family Thanks

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/02/2021 17:50

RIP Captain Tom. He rallied the nation with his old style war veteran spirit. He certainly lived his last year of life in a very full and hopefully (for him) fulfilling manner. A nationwide clap to remember him is the very least he deserves.

joystir59 · 02/02/2021 17:50

R.I.P Major Tom. However I think the special report on the news was very insensitive and is rubbing salt in the wounds of so many who have had to stay away whilst loved ones died in hospital alone. I also greatly resent the way him raising money for the NHS was latched onto by the government and the media in order to promote the idea that our NHS is a charity case requiring an old man to push a shopping trolley around in order to raise money to keep it going. The NHS is a professional health service funded by all of us through NI and taxation.
He holidayed Barbados and died with all his family around him. One in the eye for so many who have suffered loss destitutiin and isolation in this pandemic, the many who continue to suffer.

LemonViolet · 02/02/2021 17:51

So sorry for your loss @Jakadaal

AaronPurr · 02/02/2021 17:52

A nationwide clap to remember him is the very least he deserves.

Please no. I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted such a fuss making.

joystir59 · 02/02/2021 17:54

No more effing ridiculous clapping

purpleboy · 02/02/2021 17:54

@MercyBooth

No *@purpleboy* He raised money for NHS charities The NHS is not a charity.
Fair enough, but that is relevant to my point how?
Viviennemary · 02/02/2021 17:54

I admired Captain Tom and all he stood for. But please no clapping.

lovelemoncurd · 02/02/2021 17:55

This friggin horrible virus has even taken our mascot! What a shit year!

DinosaurDiana · 02/02/2021 17:56

@Disclosure

Yes, why wasn't Captain Tom offered a vaccination in December - he should have been at the front of the list after everyhing he has done for this country.
He was in Barbados in December.
Whaddayathink · 02/02/2021 17:57

He's not my mascot. I'd prefer someone who wasn't flying around.

AaronPurr · 02/02/2021 17:58

Geniune question since i'm now trying to avoid the news. Did he die of Covid? I thought he had pneumonia.
MetallicHighlights · 02/02/2021 17:58

100 000 dead - that’s an unimaginable number of grieving relatives left behind, but also a huge group of friends, neighbours, colleagues, who maybe haven’t been able to grieve properly under the circumstances. Maybe a good dose of national cathartic grief is what we all need at this point in time.

RIP Captain Tom. Love and strength to all who have lost someone important to them.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 02/02/2021 17:59

Can this just be a condolence thread for Sir Tom without the customary MN bickering, please? Just this once?

Fivepoundcraziness · 02/02/2021 18:01

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 Oh Jesus wept, not another bloody clap.

AlexaShutUp · 02/02/2021 18:02

I'm very sad to hear this news, but it was a life well lived, and all of us should take some inspiration from that. RIP Captain Tom

truthisalie · 02/02/2021 18:04

Geniune question since i'm now trying to avoid the news. Did he die of Covid? I thought he had pneumonia. Possibly, as many unwell with covid had pneumonia. The tests aren't 100% reliable.

Flattenthecurve · 02/02/2021 18:06

I feel so sad about this... Such an inspiration.. RIP x

Rowenasemolina · 02/02/2021 18:06

Covid causes pneumonia. But in his case, I think he had pneumonia first

Abraxan · 02/02/2021 18:07

@ChasingRainbows19

He was in Barbados from December to January and then had pneumonia so couldn’t then be vaccinated. Haha been in the country I’m sure he would of been done very early in the roll out.
Not necessarily. It depends on his health and medical conditions. Not everyone can have the vaccine.
joystir59 · 02/02/2021 18:08

Instead of a pointless useless national clap why don't all the clappers look around and see what positive action they could take to help someone in their neighbourhood, or pick litter or plant some veg and do a bit of guerrilla gardening, or arrange to walk with a lonely friend. Do something instead of standing on your door step clapping.
