Bristolians & Scousers are we too doomed?

New reports concerning varients in Bristol and LIVERPOOL.

What does this mean?
No mass testing here or doomed postcodes.
Wish they wouldn't reveal this with no further details. .

Yep. Curious to hear what postcodes in Liverpool are doomed.

Freshprincess · 02/02/2021 14:44

We’ve had mass testing in Liverpool for some time now. I’ve been going weekly
I haven’t seen any specific local advice about it yet though.

Redcrayons · 02/02/2021 14:46

@lovemirage I saw somewhere, possibly Echo, it’s in Southport.

TJ17 · 02/02/2021 14:48

Nobody is doomed.

Lay off the news for a while it's not healthy. Hang tight and we will all be ok eventually.

This too shall pass...

torquewench · 02/02/2021 14:50

@Redcrayons anyone reading the Echo (in particular anything by Liam Thorp) over the past year would think we've permanently been doomed since last March 😂

Cassimin · 02/02/2021 14:55

PR postcode, Southport

89redballoons · 02/02/2021 14:59

The Bristol Post article says it's not clear whether the variants in Bristol and Liverpool are the South African one, as Matt Hancock just said they were "variations of concern".

But, the Bristol Post is not known for its journalistic brilliance and they are just going off what Matt Hancock said so who knows really?

Agree with you there the worst newspaper on the world but least gives them some Bristol news to report not hull. I find the comments more amusing than the articles like More than 11 mutants in Bristol I can assure you 🤣

I just wish they wouldn't announce these things with no further detail.
Cant wait until Marvin try and tell everyone not to panic.
Rates been falling in Bristol.
My postcodes always in worst area.
Didn't stop me going to shop get a creme egg after hard graft home schooling.

Liverpool? They said Southport on my local news with a pr postcode certainly not a Liverpool postcode. Have I missed something?

Crumpetycrump · 02/02/2021 15:18

I’m in Bristol too and am worried but Bristol rates have been coming down rather than rising.

Bristolians & Scousers are we too doomed?
Sweettea1 · 02/02/2021 15:21

O yes just seen Liverpool aswell. Will this ever end 😢

89redballoons · 02/02/2021 16:01

Bristol Post now says:

"Public Health England's team said they have identified 11 cases of the variant of Concern VOC202012/01, which genomic sequencing has shown to feature the spike protein mutation E484K, predominantly situated within the South West."

I think VOC202012/1 is the "Kent mutation" and the spike protein mutation E484K is the one they think may make vaccines and antibody treatments less effective.

No information at all yet on whether just certain Bristol postcodes are affected and what increased testing we get and what new restrictions there will be. It is so frustrating that MH just announces this kind of thing on Parliament and local councils etc haven't been able to say anything yet.

PurpleDaisies · 02/02/2021 16:04

Looking at the testing they’re doing elsewhere, it’s likely to be specific postcodes. Interesting to see what happens next.

We’re not doomed. It might be a bit shit for longer but not doomed.

Agreed that's what's annoyed me. Still doesn't tell us if its 11 cases south African varient or some strange Bristol mutation. I expect both BCC and SGC scrabbling round department of helath for further answers. South Glos have recently offered lateral flow testing in Bradley stoke and Kingswood but their rates falling as fast as Bristol. Also areas of Banes and North Somerset Bristol postcodes. Seems odd yesterday's postcodes so specific and ours is vague.

Public Health England (PHE) said the 11 cases in Bristol were the Kent variant with the E484K mutation.

Some 32 cases in Liverpool are the original pandemic strain of coronavirus but with the E484K mutation.

A PHE spokesman said: “PHE is monitoring the situation closely and all necessary public health interventions are being undertaken, including enhanced contact tracing and control measures.”

So I think that means it is a weird Bristol mutation. The mutation found in Bristol is the Kent variatlnt but possibly more vaccine-resistant, and the one found in Liverpool is the original UK variant but possibly more vaccine-resistant. Brilliant...

It's one thing after another isn't it? Absolutely relentless. It's a wonder we're not completely desensitized to it by now.

Coronal virus?

@user133847 - I am desensitised, to be honest. If something comes on TV, I change channels. I dont watch any news except the local teatime bulletin, dont read newspapers (havent for about 30 years though as years back they printed total fabrications about my friends, then there was the poor behaviour of the BBC NW news when they wanted to interview someone I know after the Manchester bombing, and the press tried to bug the school staffroom of another friend in relation to the same incident). We never hear the daily stats for people recovering despite there allegedly being a 99.7% recovery rate 🤷‍♀️ I saw a comment somewhere that if it wasnt for 24 hour rolling news having to justify its existence and the rise of social media, we'd be just as indifferent to this as we were to the swine flu epidemic in 2010/11 (and I actually knew someone who died of that!).

Sorry, rambling a bit here...

Yiayoula · 02/02/2021 17:00

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 !

Yiayoula · 02/02/2021 17:02

Sorry, that was In response to BoreofWhabylon

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/02/2021 17:04

Don't panic.

There will be as many variants as there are regional accents, for much the same reasons!

Ignore newspapers and wait for someone on a podium to tell us that one is nastier than the others.!

If you think abo tit, a lot of teh SA variant measures are as much for data collection as tracking it and controlling it. That's what science does when it is given a lot of money and legs on the ground!

The fear porn is never ending.

PicsInRed · 02/02/2021 18:43

If it's in both Bristol and Liverpool, it seems likely to have filtered out of Surrey and through Greater London.

So it'll be in London too.

Why the FUCK is the border still open. Rita Ora just flew to Oz for essential 🤣 The Voice judging.

Fuck fuck fuck. FUCKERY.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/02/2021 19:56

South Glos Council have just emailed thusly:

Public health advice
Covid-19 variant of concern

We are currently working with the Public Health England (PHE) South West Health Protection team to investigate a cluster of cases in Bristol and South Gloucestershire of Covid-19. These have been identified as the Kent variant of the virus (variant of concern VOC202012/01) and also have the E484K mutation.

Some of the cases in the cluster are linked, and further testing and public health investigations are underway.

In line with the announcement made by the Secretary of State today, we will be working with PHE colleagues and partners in Bristol City Council to determine how best to enhance investigations in the local area to understand more about the transmission of the virus and its behaviour and any further control measures required.

For now, our advice remains the same: the best way to stop the spread of the virus is to observe social distancing and abide by the restrictions in place. Whilst in lockdown, it is important that we stay at home unless it is absolutely essential to go out. This includes working from home if you can.
