I have always said since before Xmas the Gvmt should have said to public everyone stay in their own houses for Christmas. I truly believe we would see as high of deaths/infections.
We can all celebrate when this is over.

Er, well done?

What do you want people to say? Christmas was weeks ago now.

namechangefail2020 · 02/02/2021 08:21

Yawn

Wishitsnows · 02/02/2021 08:22

A lot of areas were locked down before and over Xmas.

ineedaholidaynow · 02/02/2021 08:22

They pretty much did. They knew people would see others at Christmas whatever the rules but tried to limit the potential damage, but people were told the best thing would be to stay at home or ensure SD, masks, ventilation etc.

People knew the risks and you didn’t really need the PM to tell you that is wasn’t wise to have households mixing.

VettiyaIruken · 02/02/2021 08:24

Of course.
But they knew the public would ignore them and so rather than show that the public weren't following the rules they removed the rules.

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 02/02/2021 08:25

Jeez the Daily Fail would have called civil war on such a suggestion. The rest of us could see what damage it would cause...

Hardbackwriter · 02/02/2021 08:26

What a helpful piece of advice to give in February. Well done you.

Pinotwoman82 · 02/02/2021 08:26

Yes yes I totally agree with you, the last few weeks I have felt very angry about the Christmas mixing. I’ve calmed down a bit now though. I know so many people who caught it through the mixing so many !

OverTheRainbow88 · 02/02/2021 08:27

Agreed

Hardbackwriter · 02/02/2021 08:28

I actually think it's both lucky but also a bit sad that most people didn't realise then what was ahead and how long it looked likely to last - remember 'just have a big family Easter instead!'? - as so many voluntarily gave up what it now looks like will have been their only chance to see family in person for months and months.

4redSocks · 02/02/2021 08:29

Yeah he should of done and shut all the shops. The lockdown prior to xmas I don’t know it was ever lifted so soon.

Pechanga · 02/02/2021 08:31

Yes, It was completely bonkers to allow people to mix for a day or two when numbers were rising and things were getting really bad.

But, equally, people should have had a bit of common sense and stayed home to protect themselves and loved ones.

Some people were stupid enough to risk the lives of their elderly relatives (and others, and the NHS) for one day of the year, I just don't understand it.

Wtfdoipick · 02/02/2021 08:35

They made it clear that there were risks involved but the rules allowed me to spend one last Christmas with my dad who has since passed away (non covid related). Everyone there took steps before and during to minimize risk, no one has since come down with covid.

People would have mixed either way but this way gave some the last opportunity to do it safely.

MiniTheMinx · 02/02/2021 08:35

Well, yes. This Tory government needs to be made accountable for its poor decisions. Will that happen.....probably not because people are too apathetic, and once we can get back to any sort of normality they will be too distracted. Distracted either by picking up the tatters of their own lives or chasing baubles to buy.

All the way through this many people have only thought in terms of the impact to them on a personal level. They seek to grasp on to any sort of previous normality by looking always for how they can circumnavigate the rules. We concern ourselves with "what can I do" not with "what should I do" Its understandabe. The government have sought to avoid public unrest. So, whilst they should be blamed for poor decisions, each and everyone of us needs also to take some responsibility in the pressure we come to bare on those decisions. I mean, would you seriously have had Bojo lock us in over crimbo? imagine the backlash, and the presidence it would set when everyone acted against this. It would be untenable and further erode the contract between government and the people.

Barnicus · 02/02/2021 08:37

How much difference would it have made?

The area I live in has had no mixing of households at all since 1st September - that is 5 full months. We have still consistently had the highest number of cases and deaths.

meditrina · 02/02/2021 08:38

Well for London and the other tier 4 areas, he did.

Are you saying that the English tier system is wrong - everyone should be at the highest level of anywhere in the country? What does that mean for lifting lockdown - nothing eases until the whole of England can go down a tier?

I assume you don't meant that public health restrictions should no longer be a devolved issue. Or wouid you prefer Westminster decisions for all nations?

Sleepingdogs12 · 02/02/2021 08:47

The messages should ve be been clearer but why can't people also take responsibility for themselves? It was obvious what would happen afterwards. The rules just meant no one had to be on their own, not you must mix with the largest other household that you know and have a party.

lifeonhardmodept2 · 02/02/2021 08:48

Keir? Is that you?

Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2021 08:50

Maybe he should.
Just because people were 'allowed' to see each other on Christmas Day didn't mean they had to.

I do think this is one of the times that people had to think about their actions regardless of what BJ said. CV wasn't having Christmas off and any intelligent person would realise that.

iloveeverykindofcat · 02/02/2021 08:52

Passing laws that will have an extremely low compliance rate just undermines the rule of law - see prohibition. It was perfectly clear that people should be staying in their houses.

DumpedWife · 02/02/2021 08:52

Personal fucking choice.
Government said CAN and not MUST.
Government also said to seriously reconsider your Xmas plans and the risks involved - albeit at the kat hour.

We chose not to mix with family. I had my dc hone from uni for 4 days. Both then returned due to work commitments (as 0er the law around their ini courses). I'm living in a different part of UK to any family or anyone I know. I'm not happy but not seem any relatives including parents etc since last summer.

People make excuses all the time why they can't do the max they could to get onto of this virus and use blaming the government as an easy excuse.

If the government had banned Xmas, selfish fuckers would still have mixed. All with a justifiable excuse or reason to do so.

Alit of the UK problems with this virus is frankly were a nation that don't want to be told No.

I hate this government but people need to look at themselves and ask what they are doing to prevent risk of spread and stop blaming the rules for being patchy. Every single one of us is responsible for our own choices and actions.

Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2021 08:54

Great post @DumpedWife, I agree.

Thesearmsofmine · 02/02/2021 08:56

It would have been pointless, they knew that some people would mix so they tried get people to take responsibility for themselves instead, they were very clear that they didn’t advise mixing.

MarshaBradyo · 02/02/2021 08:56

Dumped agree

Sparklingbrook · 02/02/2021 08:59

Can you imagine the threads on here if he had said that?

Post after post of reasons/excuses as to why people would absolutely not be staying in their house!
