Anyone past caring if they get this wretched virus anymore?

I don't want to catch it and will follow all rules, but i'm thoroughly beaten down by it all now. Day after day, week after week, month after month with nothing to look forward to and nothing but misery, death and destruction everywhere on the news.

When things eventually open up a bit, hopefully not long after Easter, i'm going to live my live again as much as I can this summer, even if it means I might get the virus. I want to see my elderly relatives once they've had the second vaccine dose. A foreign holiday is out of the question this year and even concerts and festivals are a pipe dream at the moment, but something simple like a drink in a pub feels like paradise.

I may not get the vaccine until late summer or Autumn, but i'm not just going to write off another summer, when we'll be in for another grim winter (at least weather wise).

This isn't living.

No I am not afraid of catching it in the slightest. I was a bit scared for about a week right at the start of lockdown no1 but that was it. I'm furloughed atm and the only time I interact in person with people other than my husband and children is when I go to the supermarket. When I go I wear a mask and try to keep my distance from others in case I could be asymptomatic.

There are a million things that I'm more personally worried about than covid. Losing our jobs, my DC's not seeing other kids and what that might do to their development (2yo and 5yo) and 5yo DD's education are top of my list of worries. Health wise I would say one of us getting cancer, my toddler falling down the stairs or one of my DC's being hit by a car while we are out walking are the things I worry about most and actively take precautions against.

I'll carry on with the rules (the ones that make sense anyway) because I wouldn't want to give it someone else if I have it, because I can't afford a fine and because I don't really have a choice. But I certainly won't be against things opening up again when they are, there is no such thing as "too soon" for me when it comes to restrictions being lifted.

Arobase · 30/01/2021 11:02

Well no. I know it may be relatively insignificant, but I really don't fancy the possibility of either long Covid or drowning in my own secretions.

Athinginitself · 30/01/2021 11:03

I had covid, have long covid now and feel awful am struggling to work, function, enjoy anything, I had the vaccine yesterday, I'm desperate for restrictions to be lifted so I can see friends and family and to do normal things but will keep doing everything I can to keep transmission low for as long as needed as I dont want other people to get covid or be left feeling how I feel.

@samanthawashington

I'm isolating because my bubble has a positive case, and I am at the stage of not giving a FF anymore. I think I'm just worn out trying to avoid catching it, following all the rules and living with the constant low level anxiety. I think it's more I'm resigned to getting it before even a sniff at a vaccine. I'm not high risk but not low either
This is it isn’t it. The exhaustion of living with the unknown of whether you would live or die, thrown into sharp contrast. And the constant messaging from the government that you can control whether you catch this. Almost easier to just get it over with and at least you’re not living (or dying) with the killer uncertainty any more. What’s the saying, hope kills?
Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/01/2021 11:20

I'm only following the rules to protect other people. I'd go back to normal tomorrow if I could. I'm not scared of catching it and I'm not scared of long Covid. I would rather take the risk and get my life back. I hope that once the priority groups are vaccinated normality can resume.

Cornettoninja · 30/01/2021 11:21

@Ch3rish, yes I’m in England. I had the whooping cough one about five years ago when pregnant with dd and my friend had it when she was pregnant with her 7yo. It’s relatively recent.

AuntyClementine · 30/01/2021 11:22

From a personal perspective, I’d rather not get it but I’m not particularly bothered if I do.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/01/2021 11:27

To be honest I'm baffled that I haven't already had it. I've been working out of the home since August, DS is at school. 19 of my colleagues have tested positive and I was in the same unventilated room as 3 of them. I go to the supermarket 3 times a week, don't sanitise anything. I was out and about in pubs and restaurants all last summer. I may have had it and not known of course, but if I did then I had zero symptoms and I'm fit as a fiddle.

@HazeyJaneII kids can be vaccinated off licence at the discretion of senior medics

BamboozledandBefuddled · 30/01/2021 11:43

Well past caring about the virus, the vaccine and all related subjects now. Yes, I'm still following the bloody rules before anyone asks. I really don't care how many/which restrictions are lifted through the summer. I'm far more interested in knowing what plans the government are putting in place for next winter in case the vaccines don't solve all the problems. Right now, I assume the answer to that would be 'Errrr...ummm....alas' and that next winter will be worse than this one in some ways.

Bitbusyattheminute · 30/01/2021 11:58

Wish I hadn't had it. I wasn't horribly ill with it, but now I have headaches every day, feel knackered and can't go running. I was that irritating person that had bags of energy and now it's gone. And yes, I felt like this after flu a few years ago, but at least flu was a known quantity. What if this is now aa good as it gets?

trulydelicious · 30/01/2021 12:12

No. Every time I have this sort of feeling I learn of someone in my circle dying or being critically ill

User133847 · 30/01/2021 12:21

@frozendaisy

I thought "fuck it I will take my chances with the virus" last year, but the promise of a vaccine has changed that to, "oh god don't want it now!"
If I knew the date I was getting the vaccine then it'd be easier to do.

The winters are just so grim though that I don't want to lose another summer.

I'll still be careful, but last summer for me was just the same as winter. I'd go out for a walk and that was it. Only difference was being able to enjoy the garden, which was a huge difference mood wise with better weather.

I don't want to go another year not seeing friends and family. When things like pubs and restaurants reopen, then unless i'm really imminent for a vaccine (likely late summer at this point) then i'm not going to just stay at home all summer again.

This is a big part of why I feel so eager to enjoy the summer, after missing out last year. I just see a bunch more restrictions next winter as soon as respiratory virus season kicks in in autumn when the kids and colleges go back. The whole EU balls up over vaccines just compounds it because the rest of Europe will be so slow in getting their countries vaccinated.

Therefore, if I got the vaccine for example at the end of August then within weeks it'll be dark and cold again and potentially more restrictions.

I am fed up, but this time I know far more people who have caught it and have been really ill, despite being as careful as they always were. Plus so many more younger people having to go to hospital despite always being told it will be mild for most young people.

LindaEllen · 30/01/2021 12:36

@southeastdweller

I don't give a fuck and certainly won't be getting the vaccine (I've been offered it already).

Welcome to Boris's Britain of 2021, everyone - fucked for many years to come.

How selfish.
ImAllOut · 30/01/2021 12:41

No I'm not bothered. Most of my family have had it and thankfully none of them got really ill; my only concern previously was passing it on to them.

Jeremyironseverything · 30/01/2021 12:45

They can still get it again, you know.

nordica · 30/01/2021 12:47

Now that the vaccination is so near I'm even more determined to not take risks and catch it now. I'm in the under 50 and healthy group - but still optimistic I'll have the jab by August/September latest, the vaccine calculator was recently giving me a date as early as late April.

ImAllOut · 30/01/2021 12:52

@Jeremyironseverything

Yes and all evidence so far points to this being extremely unlikely and most reinfection cases have resulted in milder symptoms. Also most of my family will be vaccinated before restrictions are relaxed in Wales so happy to take the risk.

Ds's Drs have said at the moment ds won't be eligible for the vaccine.

JovialNickname · 30/01/2021 13:11

I never cared about catching it to start with, and still couldn't care less now! Will also not be having the vaccine, simply because I don't need it. I don't have the flu vaccine either, because I don't need it. I have a healthy working immune system which is sufficient to fight a virus. Although any risks from the vaccine are tiny and I would accept it gratefully if I was over 60 / vulnerable, it is true that the long term effects are unknown and I also don't like the way the government have overridden the manufacturers instructions regarding the gap between doses. As a healthy young person not in need of the vaccine I don't wish to take this (admittedly very negligible) risk.

For anybody saying I should have it for the greater good, I have sacrificed enough already! 1 year of losing my civil liberties is as far as I am prepared to go for other people. The vaccine gives a good level of protection; those that need it can have it. I've done all I'm prepared to do.

yeOldeTrout · 30/01/2021 13:15

I always wanted to just chance it (for myself).
Nothing has changed my view yet (risks to take for me).

FlagsFiend · 30/01/2021 13:16

I was really careful but caught it in December (I'm a teacher and got it from school). I was ill and unable to work for about 3 weeks which was miserable - I'm mid-30s and female so not a high risk group in the slightest. I'm still not fully better now, got a cough and feel a bit breathless occasionally, but not too bad - back working. By far my most distressing remaining symptom is my altered smell and taste, I can smell and taste things that aren't there - like waking up in the night and smelling burning. Having had it I'd not recommend it, but it's not as if I'd recommend catching any virus really!

Delatron · 30/01/2021 13:25

I was careful last lockdown as really didn’t want it. Decided summer would be a better time to catch it. More vitamin D, energy, hospitals not overwhelmed if the worst case happened.

So, whilst I followed the rules I wasn’t careful over summer. Went on a plane. Went to the pub/restaurants, in to London in public transport. Saw lots of people. Not much hand sanitizer.

I guess kids going back was the riskier thing but no we’ve still managed to escape.

Once the hospitals can cope everything need to start to open up.
