Vaccine queue jumping making me feel angry

373 replies

Snog · 29/01/2021 10:48

SIL has been vaccinated already- she is a healthy 40 year old, works from home, no caring responsibilities.

It's made me feel surprisingly angry. I'm not clear how she managed it at this point. On a personal level I like SIL so am pleased for her but god I feel angry at the injustice.

I know some people have picked up "spare" doses but surely even the spare doses should be managed according to health priorities? Eg at least finding someone in groups 1-9 to vaccinate if not in groups 1-4.

AIBU to feel angry about this?

I'm G6, my local surgery is doing vaccinations.

I'd happily walk down there every day & wait on the off chance they'll have some spare vaccine at the end of the day

I wouldn't want to 'push ahead' of anyone in G1-5, but I can be there in a couple of minutes, so better that than wasted.

Surgery doesn't have any 'sign up' on line though. Sigh.

So you would prefer it went in the bin rather than go to Rockbird? Because that is the reality, not that it would go to a 1-5 person instead.

That doesn't have to be the reality, they are supposed to have a list of eligible people to call in.

Of course if you want to make up scenarios we could think up all sorts of reasons for and against but that seems like a bit of a waste of time.

NoProblem123 · 29/01/2021 13:02

Do you really know all her circumstances?

I know a young person who’ve had it and found out since that they have a particular health issue.
Also Carer’s and front line staff are often quite young.
Also ‘an adult member of a fostering household’ can be only 18.
They have all righty rec’d their vaccine.

And she expects the staff administering the vaccines to hang around waiting to find someone who’s from the correct group to turn up?

Surely if there’s someone there with their arm ready it might as well be used.

SeasonFinale · 29/01/2021 13:03

@Snog

It was a "spare " dose at the end of the day
In that case should they bin it or increase the numbers of people who should be vaccinated.

What a daft notion that you would be jealous that she was fortunate to receive a call probably based on proximity to the centre and how quick she could get there!

Jijithecat · 29/01/2021 13:03

If you're going to be annoyed with anyone, be annoyed at those not showing up for their appointments.

Redcherries · 29/01/2021 13:03

As someone CEV who is waiting to hear about my vaccine its so hard and upsetting seeing reports of people who have cheated their way in first, not the random using up last doses but the people using the link that circulated or care home bosses putting their friends forward as 'volunteers' though they've never worked there.

These people have a much much smaller risk of extreme illness or death compared to CEV but feel they are more important. Its really hard to see.

My husband is in group 3 and he'd do the same.
InterfectoremVulpes · 29/01/2021 13:04

CEV people can book using the NHS link. My mum did hers today.

I hope you hear soon. Good luck.

@hangsangwitch

I agree OP, but you'll get called all sorts of names and accused of being all sorts of horrible things on here for even suggesting that things could be perhaps be done a little more fairly. Mumsnet thought police get VERY angry with anyone thinking anything other than "as long as its not gone to waste/in the bin etc".

No critical thinking allowed or suggesting other ways is acceptable.

Its the Op that is angry

Isn't that link for people who have had a letter?
greenflamingo · 29/01/2021 13:05

Better in your SIL’s arm than the bin.

Eaststreet · 29/01/2021 13:06

As far as I know the spare doses have to be used within a certain time frame. Someone I know was told they had 30 minutes to get to the centre before the vaccine became unviable at the end of the day, she got there in 25 minutes. Trying to find someone outside the ‘priority group’ obviously would be better but given the time implications surely it’s just better for someone to get it rather than nobody. I wouldn’t call that scenario queue jumping.

ancientgran · 29/01/2021 13:06

@greenflamingo

Better in your SIL’s arm than the bin.
Better in someone CEV's arm, like RedCherries than someone jumping the queue.
Silenceisgolden20 · 29/01/2021 13:07

But if someone is offered it, how is that THEM pushing in the Q? It's not their fault. They're being offered it so it's not wasted.

Thye arent barging in a clinic and demanding they have it before anyone else.

Backbee · 29/01/2021 13:07

Isn't that link for people who have had a letter?

Nope, someone who isn't eligible will be told 'you are not eligible to book through this service' once they put their details in, but those in the categories currently being vaccinated can book on it even if they haven't had a letter yet.

Backbee · 29/01/2021 13:08

@Redcherries book one online, it will only offer hubs.

InterfectoremVulpes · 29/01/2021 13:08

The letter is produced once you become eligible on the booking system so you don't need to have the physical letter in order to book. If you're not eligible it won't let you book.

Cornettoninja · 29/01/2021 13:09

@ancientgran a lot of what you’re asking for is possible but it requires a lot of resource, organisation and manpower to set up and implement. Unsurprisingly that isn’t the priority at the moment and the focus is on getting vaccines in arms.

One setting managing to contact patients in priority order doesn’t necessarily translate to implementation at a national level so it will work everywhere. It isn’t perfect and it is frustrating but the coordination involved with the numbers of patients vs staff is a hurdle in itself before getting into anything else. I honestly can’t stress enough how complex coordination of the vaccine roll out is because it’s so large.

Ultimately patience is needed. The government have more than enough vaccines on order for the whole population (possibly twice over if the current vaccines in the end stages of their trials are approved) so it’s 99% certain it’s a case of when not if everyone will personally receive theirs.

AnnB30 · 29/01/2021 13:09

I have no idea why she would have one but she was offered and it taken it. I assume a lot of us would.

Dp works with someone who’s been offered it and he’s 40. The guy has no idea why. He thought it was a scam text at first (a lot of them going around) but has contact his surgery and he has in fact been offered it. He has no idea why. The receptionist didn’t know why either. So very odd! I’m not sure if he’s had it yet or not of if he even wants it. I didn’t believe dp when he told me.

I have no advice or no why your sil has been given it. But the question is if the tables were turned would you have it? I think many of us would.

Cornettoninja · 29/01/2021 13:13

@Jijithecat

If you're going to be annoyed with anyone, be annoyed at those not showing up for their appointments.
Well that’s not clear cut either. There are many reasons for not attending but at the moment we’re talking about elderly and possibly sick people as the groups being invited. I’d take a punt that a significant proportion of no-shows didn’t willingly and purposefully miss their appointment.
InterfectoremVulpes · 29/01/2021 13:13

Maybe this is part of the problem - CEV people are missing out on potential appointments because they are being told they have to wait for a letter before they can book their vaccinations when that isn't the case.

Meanwhile vaccination centres have all these vaccines and not enough people to give them to...

QueenPawPaws · 29/01/2021 13:14

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants I'm not sure! It's a vaccine centre

AuntyPasta · 29/01/2021 13:15

’have all these vaccines and not enough people to give them to.’

People are missing appointments.
