Vaccine queue jumping making me feel angry

Snog · 29/01/2021 10:48

SIL has been vaccinated already- she is a healthy 40 year old, works from home, no caring responsibilities.

It's made me feel surprisingly angry. I'm not clear how she managed it at this point. On a personal level I like SIL so am pleased for her but god I feel angry at the injustice.

I know some people have picked up "spare" doses but surely even the spare doses should be managed according to health priorities? Eg at least finding someone in groups 1-9 to vaccinate if not in groups 1-4.

AIBU to feel angry about this?

@Snog

My point is it's not hard to find someone in groups 1-9 for a spare dose.
But what if everyone is about to go home. There's one person there, who is obviously caring for an elderly relatives ad they brought them - why shouldn't they have it ?
SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 11:05

Do you have any idea of the admin involved in going through a worthy list with half an hour to spare at the end of the day? The logistics for involved in getting an elderly person to leave the house that quick? And what if they call the first five people on the list who can’t get there on time but turn up anyway and just hang around? Jesus Christ, maybe you can think it through a bit?

actionstationsplease · 29/01/2021 11:06

This is why I'm worried about having the vaccine when it's offered, likely to be in the next week or so. I'm 43 and appear healthy but I have an underlying condition. I know if people find out, there will be raised eyebrows and judging. I don't want to share my medical history with anyone but suspect I may end up having to, to justify myself to some people Hmm

covetingthepreciousthings · 29/01/2021 11:07

@actionstationsplease don't worry about having it, have the vaccine if you're offered it, just don't tell anyone if you're worried about causing upset.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 11:07

@actionstationsplease I’m sorry you have people in your life that would judge you for that, but I guess like the OP, some people just aren’t very good at critical thinking.

Do they need to know you've had it. If you're not comfortable sharing your medical history why do you need to tell them you've had it?

Nobody's suggesting staff at the vaccine centres should be going through lists, but it must be possible to have a relatively simple IT solution where people can register an interest in a last minute vaccine and the system notifies them of available doses in order of clinical priority.

Just don’t tell them you’ve had it done.
redsquirrelfan · 29/01/2021 11:09

Vaccination centres are using up left over vaccines on anyone who can get to the centre in time.

I really don't care. It's a peculiarly dog in the manger attitude to say it should be wasted instead of someone "non-deserving" to get it.

Ultimately we all need it.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 11:09

Yeah and if they’re notified but don’t/can’t get there? It gets binned anyway?

Exactly how did she receive it? Was she just hanging round a vaccination centre on the off-chance?

Ok, so let's not even try to get those doses to those who need them most.

Don't tell anyone then! I had it yesterday and only told those close to me
SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 11:11

Well ideally of course you WOULD try @Nopreservatives but the point is there’s as yet no workable system for that, it’s not always logistically possible, and better in anyone’s arm than in the bloody bin- that’s really not so hard to understand.

lifestooshort123 · 29/01/2021 11:12

I agree with the OP. I know of 8 ex-work colleagues in a London borough who have had the vaccine - none are shielding, in a priority group or key workers. At least 3 of them were given appointments 3 days away which could have easily have been taken by someone vulnerable or a critical worker. 2 of them (in their 30s with no underlying health issues or caring responsibilities) actually asked their GP for it. It is all bollocks.

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/01/2021 11:12

I think if I was vulnerable or shielding I’d probably be annoyed too. As it is I’m not so I’m happy for anyone to receive the vaccine if it helps the country get out of this hole.

Nopreservatives · 29/01/2021 11:14

I do think people should have more sense and sensitivity than to be sharing this widely.

I work in a special school and it looks like we may get the vaccination soon, well ahead of our mainstream colleagues and we've been specifically asked to show some sensitivity for them. It's a shame they had to ask really.

Nopreservatives · 29/01/2021 11:15

I know there's not, that's my point. There should be.

Same here - I just wouldn't tell my mainstream friends
QueenPawPaws · 29/01/2021 11:16

@TansyViolet the link that was shared would only let you book if a letter had been generated
It wouldn't work for me until last night, I'm now booked in

TheChip · 29/01/2021 11:16

I get what you mean OP. It really should be better managed.

My dad is somewhat at risk, and not as high on the list as he would like. He has been asking his GP if there is anyway he could be placed on a list to be called down for the spare doses, and they have told him no. He could be there in 5 minutes.

In the meantime, its being offered to those who are much further down in the list to him. He is pleased that anyone is getting it, but thinks it should and could be managed a bit better to help those more in need get it.

Blondiney · 29/01/2021 11:16

It does seem unfair I agree.

TansyViolet · 29/01/2021 11:20

QueenPawPaws That's a different government link you are talking about than the one in the articles in the news recently.

InterfectoremVulpes · 29/01/2021 11:21

@Snog

It was a "spare " dose at the end of the day
So not jumping the queue then 🙄
Cornettoninja · 29/01/2021 11:21

Every vaccination administered benefits us all at the end of the day. No you don’t get the individual protection but the more people vaccinated the less hospital admissions (which aren’t easily predicted in otherwise ‘healthy’) people and the closer we are to softer restrictions.

Concentrate on the bigger picture.
