Vaccine queue jumping making me feel angry

Snog · 29/01/2021 10:48

SIL has been vaccinated already- she is a healthy 40 year old, works from home, no caring responsibilities.

It's made me feel surprisingly angry. I'm not clear how she managed it at this point. On a personal level I like SIL so am pleased for her but god I feel angry at the injustice.

I know some people have picked up "spare" doses but surely even the spare doses should be managed according to health priorities? Eg at least finding someone in groups 1-9 to vaccinate if not in groups 1-4.

AIBU to feel angry about this?

So you're angry about something but you've got no interest in asking how or why it happened?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 10:53

Well yeah but you don’t have the details, do you, so it’s a bit odd. No one can deliberately jump the queue. Basically everyone has to get done- if your GP rang now and said if you can get here in ten minutes you can have a dose, would you bat your eyelashes like Princess Diana and say oh no please find someone in a worthier group? I think not.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 10:54

And honestly I think there’s something wrong with you if you are sitting there feeling put out that someone you know and like happens to have been vaccinated.

FlibbertyGiblets · 29/01/2021 10:55

Arf at princess Di eyelash batting.

Snog · 29/01/2021 10:55

Surely it's the case that her vaccination may have some at the cost of someone else's life?

OP posts:
PatButchersRightEarring · 29/01/2021 10:56

So.... do you even know why she got it?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 10:56

Oh for goodness sake.

TansyViolet · 29/01/2021 10:56

There has been an IT loophole that has allowed people to jump the queue by sharing a link on social media www.google.com/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2021/01/20/trump-pardons-convicted-ex-google-engineer-live-updates/amp/

@Snog

Surely it's the case that her vaccination may have some at the cost of someone else's life?
Or it might have gone in the bin. Depends upon how she got it.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 10:57

Yes, OP, poor old Doris at number 85 is now sadly going to die today because your evil SIL shoved her out of the way and took her vaccine dose. That’s exactly how it works.

covetingthepreciousthings · 29/01/2021 10:57

Maybe the company she works for has access to vaccine booking?

I think YABU for being so angry at her when you don't even know why she has had it early.

TitInATrance · 29/01/2021 10:58

Round here one way to queue jump was to take your elderly relative or friend to the hospital drop- in centre before they were called, falsely claim they were an outpatient, and falsely claim to be their carer.

Procedures have now tightened up but it was hardly unintentional.

SingANewSongChickenTikka · 29/01/2021 10:58

Without know how or why she got it you don’t know that. It may have been her getting it or the vaccine being wasted.
Sure there are people getting it on technicalities before people who need it more, but that such a tiny part of the great work that’s happening, and not worth the distraction from the job in hand for appearances sake.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/01/2021 10:59

My FIL got it because a nurse ASKED if he was the carer got his elderly uncle, and he said he wasn’t officially but he was the only person who could take him to appointments. The nurse offered him a spare dose there and then. So there was no lying involved at all.

horseymum · 29/01/2021 11:00

Spare vaccines go in the bin if they can't get people in at the end of the day. Her being vaccinated should help other people too and reduce pressure on the NHS.

TansyViolet · 29/01/2021 11:01

It's not just leftover vaccine. People have shared a link of social media allowing them to book in for a vaccine when they weren't eligible. It's been widely reported recently

It was a "spare " dose at the end of the day

OP posts:
Rowenasemolina · 29/01/2021 11:01

And what if it’s 10 minutes before the deadline, and that shot would have had to be binned? Surely it’s better in anyone’s arm rather than that. Sometimes it just comes down to who is within a 500m radius?

Nopreservatives · 29/01/2021 11:02

Yes, it makes me feel upset for those who should have been prioritised, more than angry.

Even for the "spare" vaccines at the end of a day, it must be possible to set up a waiting list, stand by your messages, system based on clinical need. They must know that they'll have at least some leftover doses fairly early in the day.

LetItGoGo · 29/01/2021 11:02

Dose going begging..good

Working for NHS at home..organisational issue..slightly irritating but it is the way we roll in UK.

Applying via dodgy link..annoying but at least that's one more done.

covetingthepreciousthings · 29/01/2021 11:02

So you'd rather it have gone in the bin..?

RosesAndLemonade · 29/01/2021 11:02

I have been offered it at work, and also because I'm in the shielding group.
But I haven't ever shielded. Which is my choice, I did need to but I didn't want to... So I was offered the vaccine from my GP because I'm on the sheilding list but I decided really I shouldn't take that one as that's a bit cheeky as that needs to go to someone who has been inside since March and it will make a difference to their life. Won't make any odds to me as I've had covid and I've not shielded.

I have been offered it at work though so that's the one I would take, if I was going to, as that's for the benefit of us, but also our vulnerable learner's.

As it goes due to allergies and things I can't but, if I was going to I would take the work one not the group 4 CEV one as it doesn't feel right . I know realistically it makes no difference as I've been offered both at the same time and it's the same dose. But I think had I just been offered the CEV one I wouldn't have taken it because I've not shielded

Snog · 29/01/2021 11:03

My point is it's not hard to find someone in groups 1-9 for a spare dose.

This said though I know people who have taken their elderly relatives for a jab , last appt of the day and the person doing it told them if they didn't have the vaccine it would be binned. The pfizer one has 6 doses or something in a vial and any unused had to be thrown. Of course that last one should be used up and I think it would be wrong to refuse it and waste it
AuntyClementine · 29/01/2021 11:05

Can’t get worked up about this to be honest. It’s preferable to it going in the bin (if that’s what happens) and is another person ticked off the vaccination list.
