Childcare bubble

I've had a look at the rules and it doesn't say what work you need to be doing while your child is being looked after by your bubble

I am a SAHM - can my mum come and look after my son while I do my chores for half an hour?

If not, can you tell me why?

Forget the health risk, am looking at the rules online

If you want to follow the rules then you can only do this if your mum is a single adult or you are a single adult or your child is under one.

If you want to break the rules then risk assess - is your household all working from home, do you see anyone else? does your mum?

HeyDouglas · 27/01/2021 17:52

Look at the childcare bubble rules.

Grandparents can come to your house and look after your child if you work.

What work does it ACTUALLY say (childcare bubble - not SUPPORT BUBBLE) you should be doing?

Are we now saying SAHM isn't work ?

Well it means paid work surely?

If you want to break the rules and have your mum come round for a bit while you do chores, just own it. Don't try and twist the rules to pretend it's allowed. 🤷‍♀️

HeyDouglas · 27/01/2021 17:55

In not about to twist any rules

It doesn't say paid work.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/01/2021 17:55

It means paid work I think.

SAHM isn't work (I was one for 4 years) it's a life choice, not a job.

HeyDouglas · 27/01/2021 17:55

Love the 'chores aren't work'

The wording on childcare bubbles on the gov website no longer specifies they are just to allow parents to work, just that they shouldn't be used for adults or more general household mixing.

HeyDouglas · 27/01/2021 17:56

'I think' won't stand up in court.

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/01/2021 17:56

Obviously it’s paid employment, nobody is stupid enough to think otherwise.

You are being ridiculous. Childcare bubbles exist to allow people to do paid work. Pretty sure you can do what every other parent does to get household chores done and just manage?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/01/2021 17:58

You don't use paid childcare so you can get chores done though do you? Everyone has chores to do, you do them around your children.

GintyMcGinty · 27/01/2021 17:59

It means essential work.

So if you are a key worker needing childcare then grandparents can provide.

Childcare for doing housework isnt covered.
Childcare for non essential work isnt covered.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/01/2021 17:59

I'm a single working parent and I manage to do household chores with no childcare.

Pinkflipflop85 · 27/01/2021 18:00

Paid work is implied.

Nicknacky · 27/01/2021 18:00

If you want to see your mum in your house then just own it and say that rather than pretend you need childcare so you can push the hoover around.

RAINSh0wers · 27/01/2021 18:00

I don’t actually think it is only for paid work, what if you need it for attending medical appointments etc? I’m pretty sure it’s just stated as childcare, no specific reasons are given.

We use it when we work, but the kids have been with their grandparents longer than my working hours so I can get stuff done after I’ve finished.

Disclaimer - now my youngest is at nursery we’re no longer using it as we feel like the risk is too high.

mocktail · 27/01/2021 18:00

Guidance here. It doesn't mention work at all from what I can see:

This. Why ask a ridiculous question when you know you are just trying to bend the rules then be a dick to posters who disagree with you?
whataballbag · 27/01/2021 18:01

It's clearly paid employment, or urgent medical appointments. Not just whilst you do the housework ffs 🤦🏻‍♀️

JabbyMcJabface · 27/01/2021 18:02

What’s even more hilarious is that you’re a SAHM and still think you need childcare to get your chores done. Pretty sure there are plenty of parents at the moment working FT and homeschooling with zero childcare who are still managing to run the hoover round and clean the bathroom.

MrsL2016 · 27/01/2021 18:02

I am a student attending 3 days of lessons a week. It's not paid. So am I not allowed a childcare bubble. My course is for a key worker role and when on placement I can use a key worker place in school. But what about the rest of the time?

stealthbanana · 27/01/2021 18:03

It doesn’t mention work at all and as usual curtain twitching MNers are telling you what they’d like the rules to be not what they are.

My read is that you can use childcare for whatever reason you need to, if that’s to do chores or go to the supermarket by yourself then so be it.

sanmiguel · 27/01/2021 18:03

Crikey. I've seen it all now. Ask yourself is it essential your mum leaves the house? Because essentially that's all you need to know.
