Do you feel sorry for Boris?

Seeing the headlines in the papers today and there seems a lot of sympathy for him. The front pages see him looking really forlorn and sorrow regarding the death toll.

When you think a year ago he was planning on ushering in what he deemed as a golden age of Britain. Now 12 months later it's in tatters.

I can understand the sympathy, but wonder whether a Labour PM would be offered the same.

Look at Brexit though, everyone though he'd cock that up and he didn't.

That's subjective. He has in my eyes given that: the U.K. government is advising companies to register companies in the EU to avoid the red tape - which we were told wouldn't happen - which Brexit has created; the fishermen are really not happy with the deal either; and a number of foreign haulage companies have already pulled services to the U.K, just off the top of my head. Not my idea of a success really.

Maybe if success is measured on whether it's done, then that's a success. Personally I look at its effects to judge.

Everyone thought he'd cock it up and he didn't...talk about damn with faint praise!Grin

'Credit to his PR team for the lovable bafoon image because he's got people falling for his spin. He isn't an idiot though'

No, he's sharp and very clever but yes, some people do hear the umms and aahs and think he's a buffoon. Look at Brexit though, everyone though he'd cock that up and he didn't.

'Do you seriously think if he’d gone to Nowheresville Comp and Leicester University from a council estate he’d ever have become prime minister?'

Well Blair was PM and he's hardly posh, also have you heard of someone called Thatcher, she went to grammar school. Not exactly Eton/Bullingdom club status is it.

Blair also got us involved in an illegal war. Which still today has effects on the soldiers that went to Iraq. People conveniently forget that. The biggest protest ever in this country had ever seen in the streets in London. Yet that’s all forgotten. I can’t believe he wasn’t put in prison and is still allowed to speak on tv. That is fucking criminal.

Boris has tried to navigate us through an unprecedented situation. Yes he has made mistakes along the way. But Blair started a fucking war along with Bush. And people still look back and reminisce about the Blair days Confused

GetOffYourHighHorse · 31/01/2021 17:32

@VinylDetective

Blair went to Fettes - the Scottish equivalent of Eton - and Oxford. Thatcher also went to Oxford and was then bankrolled by a wealthy husband. Next?
Oh right so educated then? Sorry when you've been wanging on about privileged posh people and Eton/the Bullingdon club I thought that's what you meant. So just an education then. I see.
poppyzbrite4 · 31/01/2021 17:32

@ancientgran it's what happens when you are constantly gaslit by the government.

Here's what the article says, contradicting those who said Johnson listened to the Science. His own scientific advisers told him what would happen:

"There could be 100,000 deaths in the UK by the end of the year should the present lockdown be replaced with only “shielding” policies, a scientist advising the government has warned.

Neil Ferguson, the Imperial College epidemiologist whose modelling prompted the introduction of social-distancing measures, said that policies intended to protect the most vulnerable people in society, but which would allow others to circulate freely, could lead to a heavy death toll.

In an interview with the news website UnHerd, Professor Ferguson, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (Sage), said: “We are modelling exactly those scenarios and in practical terms you would require a very high level of effective shielding for that to be a viable strategy."

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson comes from an extremely priviledged background and to suggest that has nothing to do with where he is now, is laughable. He went to Eton. That's not prejudice, it's a statement of fact.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 31/01/2021 17:36

'So you don't support his more abhorrent comments.'

Of course I don't, the thread is about do we feel sorry for him and no I don't. We're in the same position as NI, Wales and Scotland (and Italy, Spain.. ). I feel sorry for all of us that there is a pandemic of course and all the suffering but, they've done the best any gov could and as I've said repeatedly a lot has gone well. Extra massive financial support of the nhs specifically critical care that has coped with the surges, domestic production ppe, the most testing in Europe, furlough, massive funding of research and genomic sequencing, vaccine procurements.

Just thank God he got a majority last Dec because if we'd have had Jezza and Abbot bowing and scraping to the EU we'd be a much worse situation.

'But Blair started a fucking war along with Bush. And people still look back and reminisce about the Blair days'

I know! Good ole Tone. Still to be found sharing his wisdom on Sky news 🙄

Fettes is the most expensive school in Scotland. Fees are £27k a year. So just a little bit privileged.

'But, Corbyn' = argument and credibility (where there is some) lost!

Yes we know. The prejudice comes into it because you loathe him for it. He's too posh.

So original 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BolloxtoGender · 31/01/2021 17:43

Blair days ( decade) were the most awful as I recall and see it, aside from Iraq, he sowed the seeds of many of the issues which have taken years to come to a head.

colouringindoors · 31/01/2021 17:44

No. He's arrogrant, corrupt and incompetent.

This isn’t about Blair but if you think that you’re utterly deluded. That decade saw a huge injection of money into public services which were transformed. Sadly Cameron sucked it all out again.

I didn't say that I loathe him because of his background. You're making that up. I loathe him because of his behaviour, not because of his background. Admitting that he got to his position because of his background is obvious when you see how thoroughly incompetent he is.

You seem to have a chip on your shoulder.

Thatcher said that Blair was her greatest achievement, and she was right.

Nah, I loathe him for his over-confidence, under-performance, lack of self-awareness and being devoid of empathy for the little people. Oh and his racism and misogyny. Oh and his philandering. And his political opportunism over Brexit. And his outright proven lies over Brexit.

Pfi. Gp contracts. Do a teensy bit of research.

I worked in the NHS during that decade and saw what that money achieved. I don’t need to do any research, thank you. Major started PFI. It was a mistake.

Yes but #ThankyouNicola, Drakeford and Foster have had similarly tragic death rates. Where is the hate for them? It is because he is a Tory and he's posh. Some of you are just unable to accept your own bias.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 31/01/2021 18:29

Just nip over to Scotsnet and you'll see plenty of hate for Sturgeon.

It’s because he’s incompetent but then you know that. However much you try to derail and argue, that’s the reason.
NoWordForFluffy · 31/01/2021 18:31

More juicy irony! 😂😂

He's been in the same boat as the other nations of the UK and Europe. Similar results. You hate him because he's a 'posh tory'. However much you derail and argue, that's the reason.

VinylDetective · 31/01/2021 18:35

No it isn’t. I like posh boys with brains.
