Seeing the headlines in the papers today and there seems a lot of sympathy for him. The front pages see him looking really forlorn and sorrow regarding the death toll.

When you think a year ago he was planning on ushering in what he deemed as a golden age of Britain. Now 12 months later it's in tatters.

I can understand the sympathy, but wonder whether a Labour PM would be offered the same.

OP posts:
WhingingGiraffe · 28/01/2021 06:38

No, and I'd extend it to all the ministers - the ghastly line-up of useless ghouls - Patel, Raab, Hancock, Gove, Williamson, Rees-Mogg. I'm glad their time at the top has been ruined.

Smug, self-entitled idiots. If anything good comes out of this pandemic it would be their careers in tatters along with a humiliating legacy.

YetAnotherWalk · 28/01/2021 06:42

No not at all.
Do I realise he has an impossibly difficult job? Yes. Do I think he could have done much much better and bad decision making and dithering has cost lives? Yes

NoWordForFluffy · 28/01/2021 07:41

@notangelinajolie

Thank God Kier isn't at the helm.
Why? What could / would he have done worse than BoZo?
trulydelicious · 28/01/2021 07:49

@dottiedodah

Yes he is a wealthy and privileged chap

In my mind, the responsibility for the situation is shared between:
.the PM
.the government
.different pressure groups
.the general public
.the virus

But he is given so much slack because, above all, he lacks the appropriate credentials

The level of racism, prejudice and intolerance against Johnson personally on this thread is appalling

And this is from people who see themselves as 'inclusive' and 'humanitarian'. It's disgusting to read some of these posts

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 28/01/2021 07:51

Racism?

Berniesknittedmittens · 28/01/2021 07:54

I feel sorry for the Tory/Johnson sympathisers on here, can you imagine being that blinkered?

I don't feel an ounce of sympathy; Johnson, Hancock, Williamson et al have blood on their hands and should be in court.

It was clear last January how things could go. If you look back on the preppers boards the virus was being discussed and the government was shameful then.

Johnson has presided over 100,000 deaths, handouts for his mates, failing the public, failing schools, failing the NHS. The economy is on its knees and it's his fault. History will not be kind to this government!

Racism

Yes, absolutely

Iggly · 28/01/2021 08:03

It’s the fact that they won’t hold the government to account and keep bleating about “but what if Corbyn/Starmer”. Which is irrelevant actually - we have someone in charge, Johnson, and he’s the one who is responsible.

I must have missed the racism towards the racist Boris Johnson

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 28/01/2021 08:05

What do you mean @trulydelicious I must have missed racist posts?

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 28/01/2021 08:05

This just showed up in my Twitter feed...

Do you feel sorry for Boris?
IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 28/01/2021 08:06

You should report all racist posts for sure.

TreacleHart · 28/01/2021 08:06

I think any PM at this time would be on a hiding to nowhere . They will be remembered throughout history rather than one who just plodded on because not much happened.
But to answer the question . No and he has made lots of bad decisions.

user1477391263 · 28/01/2021 08:09

BJ's handling has not been great.
On the other hand, the blame needs to be spread more widely.

It's not just a case of "silly man, he should have followed the experts' advice!" The trouble is, he DID follow the experts' advice, as it was then. Everyone seems to have conveniently memory-holed this, but back in spring 2020, public health experts, the WHO and the quality broadsheet media were all on the side of keeping borders open and against wearing masks.

Some serious questions need to be asked of other groups as well, esp the WHO.

I haven't

CherryRoulade · 28/01/2021 08:11

A leader is responsible for the actions and performance of their team; a prime minister is responsible for the actions and performance of their government.

He is a nasty, racist, pumped up, failure who cares nothing for the ordinary person. About as empathetic as a drunk slug.

He is incompetent and uncaring. Nasty dishonest and self serving but sells a good line in propaganda to the hard of thinking.

He has overseen the worst performance in the developed world. His failings leave people dead. Far, far too many dead.

trulydelicious · 28/01/2021 08:13

he WHO and the quality broadsheet media were all on the side of keeping borders open and against wearing masks

Exactly. Some seem to be prone to quickly forget what they don't want to see

XazieRose · 28/01/2021 08:13

Hubris Johnson

FoolsAssassin · 28/01/2021 08:17

I do agree that he is between two groups with strongly opposing groups so in a no win situation from this respect .

However he has played a large role in how we got to the stage where the division is so great as backed the Leave campaign who threw fuel on the existing division that existing , lit anmatch and fanned the flames. Also since his party came to power 10 years ago they have been operating on a divide and rule basis . So he is in my view largely the architect of his own misfortune.

It was always going to be a difficult job but he has made mistake after mistake and now 100k people have died and hundreds more will die daily for some time yet. I really hope he has learned from his massive mistakes, I suspect not but hope so.

Do I feel sorry for him? No, he deserves the place in the history books he will get. Why it was ever seen appropriate to appoint a PM who was sacked for lying and is morally bankrupt was beyond me at the time and some people have paid heavily for this.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 28/01/2021 08:32

@soundofsilence1 I feel about as sorry for Boris as I did for Trump when he left the White House

Ditto.

He was at Twickenham with his pregnant partner & 80,000 others in Feb
Allowing Cheltenham / international football
Bragging about handshaking Covid patients shortly before contracting Covid Hmm
Late lockdown(s!) no lesson learnt
Policy to release Covid patients into care homes
Backing Cummings over public health message and allowing him a No 10 stage
Squandering money in dodgy PPE
Putting Tory peer Dido Harding in charge of track and trace and PHE replacement body when she doesn’t have a medical background
Track and trace collapsing in Sept when Harding said ‘no one could have predicted increased demand’ and people were being directed to the other end of the country for tests
Private national tracing system which is far less effective than local public health tracing
Christmas multi household indoor mixing plan
Eat out to help out subsidised McDonalds with taxpayers money
Wanting schools open but refusing to fund or countenance any proper protective measures. No summer of catch up materialised last year.
Having to be shamed into providing free school meals in holidays by Marcus Rashford
Sending kids into ‘safe’ schools in Tier 4 for a single day before closing them
The unfair mutant algorithm exam results causing distress
Failing to introduce quarantine / testing for international travel
Waffle and bluster to answer questions

Do you recall early on Johnson appearing on TV and suggesting we ‘take it on the chin’? Well he’s certainly achieved that

Brexit - my DHs business imports 75% products from Europe - red tape, delays and increased cost are the perks so far!
UK / EU fighting over vaccines turning allies into enemies already

Like Trump he will leave a truly terrible legacy

The level of racism, prejudice and intolerance against Johnson personally on this thread is appalling

I'm not sure you know the meaning of those words if you think they're being levelled against BoZo on this thread!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 28/01/2021 08:38

Absolutely not. Not even when he had covid.

And I’m so sick to death of hearing about how hindsight is a wonderful thing. Really?

Is it only hindsight that tells you that that the below were all terrible ideas

  • telling us all that we can’t travel, allowing your special adviser to do just that, undermining everything you’ve said
  • coming out of lockdown 1 when figures were still high in parts of the country
  • encouraging people to go out with the eat out to help out scheme
  • ending the furlough scheme, before having to bring it back again
  • threatening to sue Greenwich council to keep schools open when they wanted to close. And then closing all schools a week later.
  • allowing families to mingle at Christmas
  • going on national tv to implore parents send their children to school the next day, and then go into another national lockdown that next day

And let’s not forget telling people that you’ve been shaking covid patients hands whilst visiting hospitals!

He doesn’t deserve to be the PM. He is totally unqualified and out of his depth. Hell go down in history as the worst PM.

Not one bit of sympathy here

NoWordForFluffy · 28/01/2021 08:42

He didn't do as advised.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/01/2021 08:44

He still didn't do as advised later in the year.
