Year 10 and 12 students should go back to school first

More speculation in the Hate ahead of PMQ today. Link

Exams have been cancelled for this year, regardless of the consultation suggestions of 'optional' assessments from the exam board for the current Year 11 and 13s.

Should we actually prioritise the return of Year 10 and 12 students who have missed such a huge amount of preparation time for their courses?

I know it's dreadful for Year 11 and 13 too, but they at least had a good six months before schools closed in March 2020. Still shit though.

I think year 10 and Year 12s first.

@UncomfortableSilence

Have you read the Y11/13 consultation?

Under this teachers are being asked to submit grades by mid June. So if we can get these cohorts back on 8/3 they have a lot more than 4 weeks to get assessments etc done and also to consolidate in anticipation of their onward education

I have yes. They would like to give grades to students early July. Submitted final standardised and moderated grades, even if only on a school basis to the exam boards by mid-June. Turn around time to mark an entire cohort of mocks? They will need to have finished assessments by mid-May at the latest to get all of that done, and that's without interference from the exam board.

With May half term and Easter, I give them six weeks in school before assessments are over and they are on study leave at the very maximum.

So give them the school time in as a priority

meditrina · 27/01/2021 15:14

They should definitely be the priority at the moment. Hopefully, the current year 10s and 12s will have an uninterrupted academic year from September which is far better than the current Year 11s and 13s who have had 2 very disrupted years

Only 'ish' as 11 and 13 are typically two terms of teaching and one of revision/exam. There are usually 5 terms of teaching plus the exam term

So far they've had one term randomly buggered up, one term online so far. Will summer term be safe enough for sustainable opening? Will next winter virus season be OK?

We don't know.

Years 10 and above all need attention - for all of them are losing enough time to matter. Main focus on 11 and 13, but important exam planning needed now for 2022 so that we're not all here again in 12 months lamenting another year gone wrong

AlexaShutUp · 27/01/2021 15:15

I think 6 weeks would be better than nothing, in light of all that they have missed. For some kids, it might make a significant difference.

No, they should not be the priority. This is just ridiculous, the current year 11 and 13 have had 2 very disruptive years. These are 2 year courses and BOTH years have been very disrupted.

Hopefully, the current year 10 and 12 will have a normal academic year from September. If schools go back March the disruption to the this academic year will be a lot less than the current year 11 and 13 experienced last year.

Yes, I agree with this.

Gavin Williamson is that you again?

(Spoof article, I hope)

Yes, I agree with this too.
@tierfourtears you put your children in every day as your dh has to work away from home, isn't always work from home if you have to go back in full time.
But not all teachers have primary kids and we are talking priority in secondary schools , year 11 could go in and so could some primary years .
Nope, school place denied, as we couldnt show DH (also a keyworker) would be out of the house before the cut off point.

Im not a teacher, but am a school worker, and hence also a key worker.

Totally agree KS4 should go back at the same time as primary, but that wasnt the question. It was should 10/12 go back first, and my answer remains primary should go back before, or at the same time as, KS4.

Childcare bubble with who? Friends are all working, parents are 150miles away. PiL further away. Weve always paid for childcare, and very few places are open, those which are wont take on occasional kids. Trust me, we've spent hours trying all these permutations.
