Year 10 and 12 students should go back to school first

More speculation in the Hate ahead of PMQ today. Link

Exams have been cancelled for this year, regardless of the consultation suggestions of 'optional' assessments from the exam board for the current Year 11 and 13s.

Should we actually prioritise the return of Year 10 and 12 students who have missed such a huge amount of preparation time for their courses?

I know it's dreadful for Year 11 and 13 too, but they at least had a good six months before schools closed in March 2020. Still shit though.

I don't mean writing them off, I absolutely think that they should complete their course and be as fairly assessed as possible.

Students got their CAG last year, and they were higher than a normal year. The same will happen again this year, especially if there is no threat of alteration.

The mini-exams look like being optional and marked by teachers, not examiners, so that will make no difference whatsoever.

As the parent of a year 13 I hope its not all over yet!

Exams are cancelled and now it looks like mini-exams plus teacher assessment, except that it is not at all decided yet and the stress of the unknown is awful. Add into that the social isolation and lack of f2f teaching, my DS has been teaching himself for half the course.

I don't know the soloution of how they fix the education gaps and get the kids back, but everyone has been disadvantaged in some way and we will see the effects of this for many years to come.

MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 12:44

@redsquirrelfan

But the govt seems to prioritise EYFS and KS1 every time which baffles me. They have years to catch up

I agree, but it's about allowing parents to work. Nothing to do with education.

Not really. KW already allows work and 8% is low - take KW out and lower

It’s more to do with online being more difficult for lowest years plus learning through play

manicinsomniac · 27/01/2021 12:45

I do get the economic argument redsquirrel But the govt are claiming education is their priority. Which clearly shouldn't make the youngest children first in line.

Bewareoftheblob · 27/01/2021 12:45

@Neverending21 I guess that's my point; I don't think they have any change of a fair grade, but I do think that schools and teachers will take a lenient approach.

Are you joking? Y11 have only had 3 months teaching in the last year from September to December. How are they supposed to be assessed graded when they aren’t in school, haven’t done their mocks etc. Y10 as tough as it is for them have got the rest of this year whenever they go back and all of next year.

ConstantHeadaches · 27/01/2021 12:45

I have a Y12 and Y13. They both need to be back in school.

Bewareoftheblob · 27/01/2021 12:46

I actually think that schools should be told that they can't exceed last year's grading.

So if you had 15% Grade 7 plus in English Language, you can allocate Grade 7 plus to 15% of your current cohort.

MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 12:46

Putting year 10 above year 11 right now would be an absolute shitshow thing to do.

Talk about taking it all away

Bewareoftheblob · 27/01/2021 12:47

@ihearttc Clearly I'm not joking; there are no winners here. I'm not dismissing Year 11 and 13, just saying that within reason they will be looked after now there are no central exams.

OP posts:
Lemons1571 · 27/01/2021 12:47

And Y11 should go back properly. So that a good estimation of their true grade can be made with data to support this.

My Y11 “went back” last June for 1.5 hours per week on a Monday. Hardly “returning to school” is it.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 12:48

Its not over for year 11's they still need the proof and still might not of covered all the module
My year 11 has just sat online mocks, in normal times he would sit them then have 4 months to look what he can improve to maybe up the mark or secure it, should they not be given that chance then , they are also missed a lot last year and are still playing catch up

MaddieElla · 27/01/2021 12:48

"It's over for 11s and 13s. But our 10s and 12s could have their courses saved if they go back, en masse their year groups are so much more important than any others."

The absolute arrogance of this post. Get to fuck!

Johnson is rejoining us this evening for more school talk, apparently.

Neverending21 · 27/01/2021 12:50

@Bewareoftheblob Teachers won’t be allowed to give fair grades if the current Ofqal survey is anything to go by, Y11 & 13s results will be based purely on assessments taken and results achieved and schools will be moderately randomly to check they’re not inflating results. This will not taken account of pupils who received quality online provision from March vs pupils who received inadequate online lessons :(

meditrina · 27/01/2021 12:50

It only saves them if schools are safe fir them to go back to.

Not the 'covid soup' (as I saw it described on a different thread thus morning)

The worst outcome is a precipitate return to schools that are no safer than they were just before Xmas for age groups that have adult patterns of transmission. Because having continual stop/start as SI required and/or bubbles burst is even worse, and it falls at random (as we found out in the autumn term - some schools barely affected, others with repeated outages)

What is needed right now is for Dof E to decide on measures for the public exams of 2022, nor that so much teaching time has been impacted. This may well mean the abandoned plan for 2021 - eg core topics for examination plus wider range in the optional.

Schools need to know asap (I'd say no later than the start of the summer term) about any changes so that they can make sure that they have aligned the order in which they teach topics with the core ones for examination. Even earlier if possible, because this matters whether lessons are online or F2F

That's gong to have a way bigger impact on the future of this cohort than any other single measure.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 12:50

And teachers will not submit high grades , they will submit fair grades and have to have the evidence to back, they can't just think oh I will give them all a 6
What a ridiculous thing to say

Bewareoftheblob · 27/01/2021 12:50

Even if they go back in, there will still be periods of self isolation as bubbles burst. So there's no guarantee of decent assessment for Year 11/13 even if they did go back first.

OP posts:
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/01/2021 12:52

@Redskybright yes they went back I think my son had about 5/6 hrs face to face

Fortyfifty · 27/01/2021 12:52

I have a Y10 and Y13. I don't think Y10 need priority. I see the needs of Y13, Y11 and Y12 as equally high. It's possible Y12 will have a completely undisrupted academic year 13 though from september. This Year's Y13 have had both academic years disrupted. Plus, they feel so abandoned already. It would be an awful message to write them off to focus on next year's cohort.

Neverending21 · 27/01/2021 12:52

There is no comparison between grades students were given last year and grades that will be awarded this year, as a totally different approach is being proposed.

Bewareoftheblob · 27/01/2021 12:53

@Neverending21 'If' is the word though isn't it? It's part of the proposal but I don't believe it will happen, if only because there is too much inconsistency between schools and it's too much like hard word for the exam boards who will take our entry fees any way and save a shit load of money having teachers mark for free rather than paying examiners.

OP posts:
Thethingswedoforlove · 27/01/2021 12:53

It’s pretty horrible to say it is over for the current 11 and 13s! They have no idea how they will be assessed and the rest of their lives will be influenced by the results of whatever comes next. Many haven’t had any formal exams at all yet (mocks planned for this half term in several cases). Of course those taking exams this year should be prioritised. They missed a huge chunk of their year 10/12 and are missing even more of this year! The current 10/12 will have another full year before their assessments take place (although I do agree that the current 12 missed out
Hugely last year too so probably do need to be prioritised as well).

Bewareoftheblob · 27/01/2021 12:54

@donewithitalltodayandxmas Teachers will try to be fair but tend to over predict (generalization, of course), hence the higher grades last year.
