I want to pick something up, I live very close to one but its tiddly and doesn't have what I need in stock. My next nearest is six miles away, just over the county border. I can do my food essentials shop whilst I'm there.

Someone has been brainwashing me about anpr 🙄

Yes, of course. The guidance is to stay local. My local supermarket is easily that distance away.

Shmithecat2 · 27/01/2021 07:38

Of course you can!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 27/01/2021 07:39

Of course you can, the nearest large Tesco to me is about that far away, I don't need to ask prmissin to do a big shop.

FreakingOut1 · 27/01/2021 07:41

Oh good. I feel like I've lost all common sense.... I ordered something for click and collect at argos and now feel like I'm being badgered about doing the 'wrong thing'.sigh. I miss freedom.

Yes. Definitely. Didn’t think counties were particularly relevant now we’re no longer in tiers.

I drove to a car dealership 30 miles away over two county borders, to get my car fixed. Should I have booked it in with our local mechanic (we tried but he admitted the fault is beyond him and he can’t fix it?) How would that have helped fix my car so I can work?

Not like you’re driving to Cornwall for a quick Tesco top up (apologies if you’re already in Cornwall Grin)

Badgered by who? No one here.
Bmidreams · 27/01/2021 07:43

It's only advisory, it's not law. Just be sensible.

FreakingOut1 · 27/01/2021 07:44

@PurpleDaisies not here! My sister

There are quite a few people on MN who would tell you off for this and think you should be hermetically sealed in your house. There are also quite a few that would tell you they're still in tier 2. I think at this point we've all started to lose touch with reality!!

But yes your trip is ok both legally and morally (you're not at any higher risk of transmitting anything 6 miles away than 2 miles away!)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/01/2021 08:04

If I was to drive West from my house, I would go over the county border within five miles. If I was to drive South, I could pass through multiple counties, and back into my own within half an hour. Or I could drive East... For a couple of hours and still be within my own county.

Logically, County borders are nonsensical when referring to local. There is no magical line. Use your common sense.

countdowntonap · 27/01/2021 08:10

Having seen news that 20 people attended a bay shower, and only 2/20 attendees received a fine (a laughable £200) then an Argos trip is absolutely fine! www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/covid-rule-breakers-hot-tub-parties-baby-showers-car-meets-b1792984.html%3famp

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/01/2021 08:12

Yeah, it's fine.

I live right on the tip of a county bordering 2 others. 20 minute walk in one direction will take me into a second county, 30 minute walk in the other direction will take me into a third county. Just use common sense.

Kazzyhoward · 27/01/2021 08:13

If it's something you need, and you cant get it more locally, then of course it's fine to do.

Justanotherfaceinthecrowd · 27/01/2021 08:16

I work at different hospitals. All over the West and even up into Wales. I do hundreds of miles a week. Often a 80 miles from home and never once been pulled in lockdown 3 (I did in lockdown 1!)
Albeit, it's for work. But they dont know that 🙂 Don't panick.

Ginfordinner · 27/01/2021 08:16

My nearest Sainsburys is 11 miles away, so I have no option but to travel over 5 miles to get to one.

perhapstomorrow · 27/01/2021 08:16

I drove 7 miles at the weekend to an Argos as my local one didn't have something in stock. Like you I felt like I was breaking a rule even though I stopped outside, collected item and went straight home.

Totally this. Takes literally 2min to drive from where I am in to the next county. Takes less than 10min to run there.
ShadowsInTheDarkness · 27/01/2021 08:20

Haha yes of course you can! Our nearest large supermarket is 35 mins away but we frequently use the big Asda which is an hour away from our house! If we wanted to go to Halfords that would also be an hour. Even the vets is 20 mins away. Living rurally isn't uncommon either so lots of the population are still doing what might be considered long journeys each week.

Ginfordinner · 27/01/2021 08:21

We live close to two different county boundaries. Unfortunately it results in massive county lines issues Sad

PaperMonster · 27/01/2021 08:35

Yes. Our nearest decent-sized supermarket is 10 miles away in the next county - we’re just on the border. OH goes every week.

starfish4 · 27/01/2021 08:41

I have the choice of doing my food shopping at two supermarkets within a ten minute walk or doing a click and collect at our larger Tescos about six miles away. I've been doing the click and collect as we're in a large village with higher numbers, and I'm trying to keep contact to work only. I've just been really careful to keep away from staff/other customers.

TransplantedScouser · 27/01/2021 08:46

I drove 16 miles to go to Waitrose when I had plenty of other supermarkets nearer. There was something I needed that I knew I would get there which I couldn’t source locally as all the local stores have closed their fresh fish counters and deli counters

FreakingOut1 · 27/01/2021 08:57

Thanks everyone, sorry if its a dim question but there so many types which make no sense to me that I have lost the ability to think...

FreakingOut1 · 27/01/2021 09:10

I have no idea what happened there, I meant so many different rules..

Yes, you can do whatever you like.
You don’t need to ask for permission.
