The Express reports:
"No indication has been given as to why the briefing has suddenly been called, however, it comes less than 24 hours after false reports in the German media caused alarm by claiming the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was ineffective among over-65s."

It could also be to make the announcement about hotel quarantining for those entering the country. I would imagine both subjects.

@Unsure33 yes I read re: fashion industry and I think uk was hit hard due to people returning from
Skiing etc , although likely here before as well . We still have so much to learn I think.

Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 19:51

@adeleh

Would people have accepted or listened to a longer harder lockdown than we have had ?

In some countries in Europe there were instant on the spot fines if you were out without a letter of permission ? And police with guns enforcing the rules ?

Can you imagine some people here going along with that ?

I did say right from the start that the mistake Boris made was overestimating the intelligence of the British public .

A stricter lockdown could have worked but might have resulted in riots .

Pootle40 · 26/01/2021 19:51

@Morgan12

The case numbers are falling because the schools are closed ffs!
Ha ha yes it's entirely down to that. Hmm
Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 19:52

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

Yes agreed and I was surprised at the percentage of carriers that are asymptomatic. It was a higher percentage than I thought .

venus22 · 26/01/2021 19:55

@LacyEdge

“Okay folks—I’ve given it my best shot, but alas I must tell you that I am incapable of running a country. I am therefore handing the reins to a government of national unity and shall sally forth unto a Tuscan villa post haste. Toodle-pip.”
I have dreams about this....he stands down, and someone capable takes over.............

@venus22

Dianne Abbott

Then we will only have 3000 deaths .

So she made a mistake in one interview after a lot of them and was suffering hypoglycaemia and you come up with that.

Hmm
Livelovebehappy · 26/01/2021 20:09

Didn’t China report just 1 death today? Says it all about their statistics tbh. Lying out of their arses.

She is not leader of the opposition........and really? Really?

Fluffyowl00 · 26/01/2021 20:10

Or Pritti Patel with three hundred thousand, and thirty four, nine hundred and seventy four thousand Hmm

peak2021 · 26/01/2021 20:10

@Unsure33 you are right about the nature of policing in some European countries. Someone said you do not mess with the cabinieri. Probably also have reasonable numbers too, unlike in the UK where numbers have been cut over the last few years.

The one thing that made I think the biggest contribution to lack of respect for Covid 19 restrictions in the UK was that not only Dominic Cummings was not sacked, he was given space to tell a story that was Booker Prize worthy. One rule for the rich/government and another for the masses upsets a lot of people.

randomer · 26/01/2021 20:15

I guess I would add to TC comment .... We are old and fat and black and a class driven society. Oh and we have idiots in charge.

randomer · 26/01/2021 20:17

@peak2021. History will look back oat that as absolute defining moment. What does he have on BJ? Must be monumental.

venus22 · 26/01/2021 20:17

Diane Abbot made a mistake; is that to be sneered at?

JiminyLeeCricket · 26/01/2021 20:21

Johnson may appear bumbling but he is very intelligent and sharp.

He's not, actually. His grasp of Latin is dreadful, all learned by rote, and he wasn't clever enough for PPE so was schooled into the elitist stream of Classics to get him into Oxford.

He always knows the details of what he is talking about at pmqs.

No he doesn't. He's a national embarrassment.

You mustn't be taken in by his messy hair do and umms and aahs.

He's incoherent. See 'national embarrassment' above.

Only if it's a black woman, it appears. Some people like to keep them in their place.

Really? Really? I think the mistake the British public made was overestimating the intelligence of B.

JiminyLeeCricket · 26/01/2021 20:23

What sort of people make a joke about over 100,000 covid deaths by sneering at an unwell diabetic shadow cabinet member?

Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 20:25

Ok ok I take it back . But the next time I see a comment about an eye test for a man who has a SN son I will strike back

All’s fair in love and war .

We had all been having a calm non political discussion about social attitudes to a pandemic before slagging off a man who tbh today looked shattered .

He is still a human being when all is said and done and perhaps he will go , personally I don’t have any feelings about that at all .

teuer · 26/01/2021 20:25

I did say right from the start that the mistake Boris made was overestimating the intelligence of the British public .

That made me so angry when he kept saying he trusted people to do the right thing and to follow the guidance. There just isn’t that sort of culture here where people do the right thing for the common good. There is a great emphasis here on the individual rather than the collective. As such there needed to be a more authoritative approach - this is what is happening, this is what you have to do and what the consequences of not doing that would be. Too little, too late and too much credit given to the general public = too many deaths.

randomer · 26/01/2021 20:26

What the fuck is it with this Latin thing??? English is in part a Latin based language, give me a couple of weeks,I could do it.

Now then , the women I work with moving from Arabic to English of from a stick in the sand and picture to English....that is true intelligence.

trulydelicious · 26/01/2021 20:27

@adeleh

People did predict this kind of pandemic

So other countries/governments around the world should have foreseen this too and didn't either. How come?

randomer · 26/01/2021 20:28

looked shattered
a shattered fuck up, but still alive.
