The Express reports:
"No indication has been given as to why the briefing has suddenly been called, however, it comes less than 24 hours after false reports in the German media caused alarm by claiming the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was ineffective among over-65s."

It could also be to make the announcement about hotel quarantining for those entering the country. I would imagine both subjects.

@trulydelicious I agree they should and people can do that themselves .
Going off to dubai etc in the middle of a pandemic is a piss take
I had holiday booked for june ( moved from last year) I moved it to next year already as even if allowed , I don't think it would be right just yet.

Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 18:52

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

Yes Italy are having a bad time again and apparently they have a better health service than us. A lot of Eastern European countries are really struggling as well .

I am quite angry that Russia are allowed to hide their figures so much . They declared 186000 deaths ( not 50000) but on a lot of statistics that had not been updated .

But I know we can’t compare like for like because of the way records are kept and demographics of each country . But also some countries are definitely more inclined to follow rules .

ShanghaiDiva · 26/01/2021 18:53

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'Other counties with quarantine rules include China'

I believe China has the CCP running the show. So comply or be arrested or even worse. That wouldn't work here.

They do indeed. I lived there until last year. It was mandatory to wear a mask in the supermarket and also on public transport: no mask no shopping, no mask no travel. No threats, no police , just a great sense of collective responsibility.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 18:54

@peak2021 we may be an island but we are a huge travel hub one of the reasons we are successful as a country and covid was here already , you know in terms of lockdown we were days behind countries with similar numbers not 3 weeks

PigletJohn · 26/01/2021 18:54

The incoherent bluster and ruffled hair is just an act to avoid sensible adult discussion.

Look at him being dissected by Starmer, like a lying con-man on the witness stand.

Come off it . He looked absolutely exhausted .

And he took responsibility .

Personally I don’t think it’s all his fault as a proportion of the British public just don’t give a damn or have any common sense .

Whatever he did 50% of the population won’t agree anyway .

Add that to a pandemic and he does not stand a chance really .
This with bells on.

itsgettingweird · 26/01/2021 18:54

I've heard so many people say how great Jeremy hunt would have been as HS. Have they forgotten he was HS when the had operation sigmas?

And Michael Gove would have been better at something. Well we have him to thank for the mess of education and exams system that our students only have exams to prove their ability.

Everyone makes mistakes. Some bigger than others. And everyone can sit on the sidelines saying they'd do better.

But truth is we don't know if anyone else would or could. Maybe others would have been as bad.

And I'm not as impressed with Starmer as I thought I would be.
Today he was calling for schools to open after he called for them to shut - just 3 weeks ago!

I'm getting increasingly annoyed with people calling for lockdowns, school closures, care homes to shut to visitors and then when it's done want to know a date lockdown will end (he's not mystic Meg), want schools reopening and everyone critiquing the fact care home residents don't have visitors.

None of this is easy. In fact it's fucking shit and I'm struggling with this lockdown the most. But I find it harder when everyone is wanting precise timings for the future everyday when we just need to allow this to continue whisky cases drop and data is collected.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 18:55

@unsure33 yes even germany healthcare is starting to have issues apparently and that is one to hold high and model going forward.
Europe seems to of been quite badly hit and we will learn more in years to come.

Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 18:55

@peak2021

I am not disagreeing with you but there is constant moaning on here and SM about any lockdown and how it’s not worth it . The consequences are apparently too much to take .

Personally I think we should have had a coalition government it would have taken some of the divisions out of the equation.

Im no Boris fan but i do completely agree with this

wanderings · 26/01/2021 18:57

@donewithitalltodayandxmas It's true that they can't say much about when they can do anything about the legacy of their lockdown. Back in March, they were hoping that it wouldn't be for long, and that they might be able to get away with not doing anything much, and tough shit to those who fall on hard times because of a short lockdown.

But it's been nearly a year now; it's clear that there will be massive damage from lockdown, they can't pretend now that that will not happen; at the moment they're still covering it up by throwing money at people, which they will claw back later. They have a whole civil service at their disposal to plan for how they are going to help the people and business they have shafted; it would be nice to know they are using it.

Even if all they proactively said was "we are working closely with schools to plan how we will we help pupils whose education has been ruined"; "we are working with business to work out how they can rebuild" etc, without waiting for a journalist to quiz them on it, that would be something, and would show that they are at least thinking about this, and admitting that this will be the reality for many people less wealthy than them. But at the moment, they are very much giving the impression that they are caring about it at all; anyone would think that they only thing they are planning is a mass resignation, so that none of them will have to deal with rebuilding lockdown-ravaged Britain.

Onedropbeat · 26/01/2021 18:57

Did the PM say about making law for people to work from home if it’s possible?

My work place want me to be going into the office every day but I just work from a laptop

GetOffYourHighHorse · 26/01/2021 18:57

'No threats, no police , just a great sense of collective responsibility.'

So the footage we saw early last year of people being forcibly removed from their apartments was all fake?

'Collective responsibility' in China. They've brainwashed you well. I wonder if the Xinjiang re-education camps have a great sense of collective responsibility too.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 18:58

@pigletjohn dissected by Starmer ?? When ?? i had high hopes for him but he hasn't been great , he changes his mind left right and centre as well, but maybe thats because this is ever evolving for every measure brought in to protect some it badly affects another.

thedancingbear · 26/01/2021 18:59
@thedancingbear no one going for pm would of dreamed of a pandemic because history shows we were overdue ffs ,
This is gibberish

Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 18:59

@itsgettingweird

Is starmer really calling for schools to open ? I don’t quite understand that at this point when figures are so high .

He has supported the government at most stages ( I watch pm questions when I can)

Then afterwards changed his mind so I am not really clear about what he wants .

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 18:59

@ShanghaiDiva really no threat? They are all compliant just because ? Not because of how country is run and different culture.
And also people were locked in , lockdown was very strict , that would not be accepted here

GetOffYourHighHorse · 26/01/2021 19:00

'Look at him being dissected by Starmer, like a lying con-man on the witness stand.'

I must admit I did think a prior prosecutor may be actual credible opposition but no, Johnson bats him away like an annoying fly. Starmer makes Blackford look 'forensic'.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 19:01

@thedancingbear its not gibberish at all , do you really think either Corbyn or Johnson or anyone thought oh I know we are due a pandemic this will happen in the next term.

Are you Dan Hodges?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 19:02

@Unsure33 Starmer doesn't know what he wants from one say to net either , it depends who is shouting loudest. But in his defence its bloody hard and every decision has an impact on someone .

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 26/01/2021 19:03

@chomalungma he hasn't done that well , surely you can see that?
Rather than just throw an insult at someone point out when he has challenged well that would be better.

Unsure33 · 26/01/2021 19:04

@wanderings

Perhaps you are right they will sneak off and leave a note

Sorry no money left.😬

I am not sure but I think if they can recoup and somehow get some energy they are going to have a huge job on their hands to get out of this . I guess there could be a lot of changes in the budget .

AnyFucker · 26/01/2021 19:04

Starmer is now calling for schools to open ?

Ffs, he is more contradictory than BoJo. He just shouts for the opposite of everything.

He called for effective track and trace and emphasised the importance of local track and trace.

Called for the problems around self isolation to be tackled.
Called for the problems around company directors to be tackled.

And Boris never admits there's a problem.
