Primary schools back sooner than expected?

It’s hard to know what to believe, but PHE now seem to be suggesting that primary schools can safely return after half term - which seems to contradict all other recent reports and government comments
focussing around Easter!

My granddaughter won’t be going back till it’s 100% safe.
Our family was healthy all last year when the pandemic hit and stayed safe etc, then soon as my granddaughter returned to school, all of us caught Covid. She really didn’t have any symptoms, but my daughter and I have been very poorly and still suffering long term effects now.
It’s effected our hearts and nervous system.

Benjispruce2 · 27/01/2021 17:43

Well if they’re giving us two weeks notice, we’ll have heard by this Friday I hope. Nothing yet where I work.

formerbabe · 27/01/2021 17:44

What on earth does this even mean?

Benjispruce2 · 27/01/2021 17:44

We are now testing though. First lateral flow tests received today. Twice a week from now on for staff.

Blacksheepcat · 27/01/2021 17:45

March 8th is the earliest they can open if it’s being reviewed on the 22nd Feb.

Hushhush89 · 27/01/2021 17:45

Not according to borris, just watched his announcement and he is talking about lifting some restrictions from w/c Feb 22nd and schools to go back March 8th

Char02 · 27/01/2021 17:49

I thought that schools will not reopen until 8th March

Incase anyone would like to read - but who really knows!!!

www.bbc.co.uk/news/

After complaints about confusion and drift about when schools in England are going back, Boris Johnson has sought to bring some certainty.

They won't be going back straight after half term - but the target date will be 8 March.

Sources say the aim is for all schools and year groups in England, in primary and secondary, to return back on that date - rather than it being the starting date of a phased or regional return.

Although that could be subject to any changes in local Covid-19 levels.

When schools do go back it is expected there will be mass testing for pupils and staff, in the scheme initially planned for the start of term.

It still leaves parents home schooling for another five weeks - and means most of this term will have been without face-to-face lessons.

fib11235 · 27/01/2021 17:52

8th March is too soon, tier 3 here we come June/July...

Dinkydody · 27/01/2021 17:57

It actually says March the 8th.... at the earliest! 🤦‍♀️🙄

Isn't that closing the door after the horse had bolted? You've all had it already.

What is 100% safe?
Mol71 · 27/01/2021 18:00

Mol
Just heard by Boris schools won't be going back till March 8th so teachers can get prepared from half term and Covid numbers have come down.

Stovetopespresso · 27/01/2021 18:01

@fib11235 if schools go back there won't be any lifting for other areas (who you can meet, pubs etc) for sure

boqq · 27/01/2021 18:09

@Trumplosttheelection

Kids need education. It's going to be time to suck it up. They will vaccinate who they can and rely on the normal improvement in hospital admissions that comes with spring. However any nhs bid would tell them that happens April onwards, not in March so March will probably be a rocky month but still.
For being anti Trump, you sure reason like that. What use will education be if their parents are dead... Will that not impact that or is it Maths and English which make for a good life? With proper online teaching in place the education doesn’t even need to suffer. My son is doing a lot better now than he ever did in school as he’s working at his own pace without kids interrupting all the time...
Staffy1 · 27/01/2021 18:12

I wish they would just wait a bit longer for further drops in cases and more vaccinations to be done. We need hospitals to be able to get back to treating people for urgent things that are not covid.

formerbabe · 27/01/2021 18:12

What is 100% safe?

Well exactly...No one knows but this line is trotted out constantly

puppeteer · 27/01/2021 18:12

2fallsagain, you reply to dorey69's post asking "What is 100% safe?", and it's obvious that nothing ever can be.

But I the point I see in dorey69's post is that we all perhaps make our own judgement.

And I rather think that has been forgotten.

I do think we could allow schools to reopen, and I do think that would mean that some children (nor teachers) would not return immediately. It certainly wouldn't be easy to make it happen.

But it seems only responsible to allow those that are (or feel) vulnerable to stay safe, while doing our equal best as a society to minimise the harms of school closures.

For me, home schooling is part of the problem. (I was home taught as a child, and I'd never repeat it.) But I totally see that some people's situations mean it is quite risky.

WashingFairy885 · 27/01/2021 18:13

I was under the impression it would be more like Easter... personally I would rather know it had been extended to April, so I dont get my hopes up & be mentally prepared, instead of it being announced closer to the time! Give me the worst case scenario!

Iseestupidpeople · 27/01/2021 18:16

It’s not the scientists that say kids can go back to school in March it’s the politicians forcing their hands and making more decisions that will cost yet more lives needlessly. Last I checked kids don’t get the vaccine so how is it safe for them to return?!
If it’s so safe why don’t those politicians spend a week in said kids class rooms to prove it!!!

THEDEACON · 27/01/2021 18:18

Don't hold your breath or bank on schools returning before Easter There were 1725 deaths registered in last 24 hours and thousands of new infections the death toll from them is still to come

MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 18:18

Covid won’t be eradicated so how long will you keep your dc off?
MarshaBradyo · 27/01/2021 18:19

@formerbabe

What is 100% safe?

Well exactly...No one knows but this line is trotted out constantly

It’s more case numbers / hospitalisation over ‘safe’

JVT’s answer was good on this

angrysquirrel73 · 27/01/2021 18:20

If they're now saying 8th March, there's bound to be some kerfuffle from the unions etc saying its not 'safe'. Limited number of children will get to school before Easter and we'll be lucky to be at school after Easter Angry

Benjispruce2 · 27/01/2021 18:30

Do it seems as 8 th March is 2 weeks after the vaccination deadline for the most vulnerable groups. As it takes 2 weeks for protection to start to develop that makes sense.
