Would you get the vaccine in this situation?

Mid twenties with no underlying health conditions. Currently TTC for second child. Work in hospital, non-patient facing, clinic not full today as had so many no shows so have been offered Covid vaccine so as to not waste a batch. Spoke to them about TTC and they said if I get the vaccine to put on hold for 3 months after each dose, so 6/7 months in total I'd have to wait before trying again. No pressing need to keep TTC now but I do have PCOS and already a 2 year old DC and I don't want the age gap to get much bigger. First month TTC so there is a slim chance I could already be pregnant.

Would you stop ttc for the vaccine or being low risk would you continue trying as PCOS could make it take ages anyway/hoping for the age gap you wanted between your kids?

I feel like I should have it but I am so far down the priority list I'd made my peace with ttc during the pandemic and now I feel a bit like a deer in headlights!

You need to discuss with an HCP if you may already be pregnant then they may not administer.

WilsonMilson · 25/01/2021 13:55

Personally I wouldn’t have the vaccine if ttc, and I wouldn’t stop ttc to have the vaccine.
Not anti vax, do have reservations about the unknowns concerning fertility/pregnancy at this point.

Am sure most people on here would take the vaccine though.

dementedpixie · 25/01/2021 13:55

I thought they'd decided you didn't need to wait to TTC after the vaccines now

Not what I have been informed of in my health board today.

I’d have the vaccine. Pregnancy and Covid must be horrendous.

and that those who are trying to become pregnant do not need to avoid pregnancy after vaccination

I am assuming that this is Pfizer vaccine, as it can't be kept?

My first question would be what happens with the second dose? Are you guaranteed when you will get it? Will you be offered a second dose earlier than 12 weeks, if there is spare?

If you do fall pregnant, the vaccine isn't recommended unless you are high risk. That means you may not be vaccinated for over a year.

That advice is for women at high risk eg frontline workers or CEV.

As there isn't any data on safety during pregnancy, although there are no safety concerns, it can't be recommended.

Yes it is the Pfizer vaccine

The second dose would be administered within 3 months rather than 4 weeks but would get it despite only having vaccine as spare

Slim chance I conceived this cycle, wouldn't test positive yet as too early but feel a bit sad at not even trying for 6 months and the age gap getting bigger and bigger. I obviously do want to be safe though.

It's not just for frontline workers but frontline workers are included in the advice

tellthem · 25/01/2021 14:12

I'd have it. the risks of getting covid when pregnant are too much for me so I'd want to know i was protected.

loretta81 · 25/01/2021 14:18

I would definitely have it. Far better to start a pregnancy already immune to covid. I'm 17 weeks pregnant, group 6, and wondering what I should do if called...

VinoMerino · 25/01/2021 14:27

Think if I hadn't already started ttc it wouldn't be so shit to have to put it on hold for 6 months due to getting the vaccine but it's the fact I've already started tracking and trying that's making me second guess. I'm such low risk I shouldn't be getting the vaccine for a long time yet anyway so I'm not sure whether I should jump at the chance or carry on with my plan Sad

I didn't say it was just for frontline workers. It's advice for people who are high risk, for example, frontline workers or CEV (clinically extremely vulnerable). OP has said she is neither. The advice for everyone else is not to have the vaccine during pregnancy/TTC until there is data to show it is safe.

loretta81 · 25/01/2021 14:32

@VinoMerino its a really difficult choice. Remember, though, you ARE high risk from 28 weeks pregnant, so it might be advisable to be protected before you get to that point (the current advice is to shield from 28 weeks).

orangenasturtium · 25/01/2021 14:41

I would probably go for it OP. The consequences of catching COVID-19 while pregnant could be worse than a slightly bigger gap between DC.

As the guidelines dementedpixie and I posted say, there is no reason to think there will be safety issues with the vaccine for pregnant women or those TTC but it cannot be recommended yet as there is no data. The advice to wait 3 months is precautionary. However, the guidelines would mean that you wouldn't be offered the vaccine once you are pregnant so it could be a long wait.

Phymp · 25/01/2021 14:45

If you are not pregnant I would have the vaccine and use contraception for 3 months.
Having covid in late pregnancy is not good.

ILookAtTheFloor · 25/01/2021 14:46

I'm in a similar position and I've got mine booked for Thursday and no way am I delaying TTC so I'm just going to go for it.

Emma9876 · 25/01/2021 14:47

I have had the Vaccine, currently TTC and the Drs I spoke to have said it's fine. No need to stop or wait. x

Where are you and what vaccine have you had? I can't find anything to confirm this online x

3 months from second dose.. so would be looking at 6+ months which is why I'm unsure, it took a year and a half for me to conceive last time so another 6 months before even trying could work out to be a lot longer, it's so hard

Not TTC yet but hoping too at the end of the year and Iv had my vaccine, work in NHS patient facing so felt personally it was a no brainer.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 25/01/2021 16:27

I'd definitely have it, it's better to be around and healthy for the child you already have.

hillarypcof · 25/01/2021 16:29

I had my vaccine at the weekend and I was told that if I am ttc then I would not be allowed to have it. This was also written in bold on the pre-medication leaflet we were given x

ThePug · 25/01/2021 16:30

I'd have the vaccine. Playing devils advocate what if it takes you 6/9/12 months to conceive? Then 9 months pregnancy... that's a long time to go unvaccinated. I'd get it done and 'out the way' now, then get back to TTC. And hope that you might get another clinic with leftover doses so you can get your second dose a bit sooner.
