Would you get the vaccine in this situation?

Mid twenties with no underlying health conditions. Currently TTC for second child. Work in hospital, non-patient facing, clinic not full today as had so many no shows so have been offered Covid vaccine so as to not waste a batch. Spoke to them about TTC and they said if I get the vaccine to put on hold for 3 months after each dose, so 6/7 months in total I'd have to wait before trying again. No pressing need to keep TTC now but I do have PCOS and already a 2 year old DC and I don't want the age gap to get much bigger. First month TTC so there is a slim chance I could already be pregnant.

Would you stop ttc for the vaccine or being low risk would you continue trying as PCOS could make it take ages anyway/hoping for the age gap you wanted between your kids?

I feel like I should have it but I am so far down the priority list I'd made my peace with ttc during the pandemic and now I feel a bit like a deer in headlights!

I would keep ttc and not have the vaccine in your shoes, I think.

VinoMerino · 25/01/2021 16:34

I get that but I usually wouldn't be offered the vaccine anyway it was just a fluke thing that they happened to have spare. I've been Googling all day about what if I'm already pregnant and ttc and couldn't find anything concrete and I just panicked and didn't go. They said I might have a chance tomorrow but I'm so anxious at it. Those saying I want to be around for my children, surely as a 26 year old with no health conditions there's not much risk of me dying if I don't get it? Oh god I'm panicking

Have the vaccine!!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/01/2021 16:43

Given your age I’d probably put off TTC until well after second vaccine. Different calculation if you were well into your thirties but mid twenties should be fine.

I would have the vaccine and put TTC on hold.

WaltzingTilda · 25/01/2021 16:55

I wouldn't. Not if I am ttc. Who knows if putting ttc on hold for 3 months is good/long enough . I am not anti vax BTW, I weigh up the pros and cons and how everything relates to my circs before I put things into my body.

Thefeep · 25/01/2021 16:55

No I wouldn’t have any vaccine when TTC or pregnant .

MindyStClaire · 25/01/2021 16:55
@VinoMerino its a really difficult choice. Remember, though, you ARE high risk from 28 weeks pregnant, so it might be advisable to be protected before you get to that point (the current advice is to shield from 28 weeks).
The current advice is to strictly social distance, not to shield. Pregnant women have never been advised to shield in the UK (unless due to another medical condition), there has been a lot of misinformation about this. I had a baby in the summer and saw a lot of women struggling with their mental health as they thought they shouldn't be leaving the house, but this was never the advice.

This is my worry as well.

I know it's sensible to get the vaccine but there will already be 3 years between them if I was lucky enough to conceive right now, which is unlikely. I want them to be close, I want to get past the baby years in one stage and get back to full time work, I don't want to put my life on hold for Covid when I'm low risk which is why I decided to ttc and today this just feels like a big curve ball and it's thrown me completely

I would get an antibody test (£39) that way if it comes back positive then you already have a level of natural resistance which takes the pressure of you on getting the vaccine.

I'm planning to TTC in April as soon as I've had my second vaccine on 30th March. Our trust says it's fine when TTC, no need to delay afterwards

There's such mixed information about this it's worrying me!

@MindyStClaire my midwife literally used the word "shield" at my appointment last week! Thanks - will seek clarification.

Thedutchessofhastings · 25/01/2021 18:40

I’ve seen official guidance that says you don’t need to wait to TTC after having the vaccine - However you may be advised to delay the second dose if you fell pregnant between doses.
I would have it. A friend of mine has just given birth prematurely due to early labour brought on by Covid infection and apparently this is quite common. I would suggest the risks of having COVID when pregnant outweigh any risks of vaccination now.
