Schools and covid

So for all of you pressing for schools to open fully. I now have tested positive after teaching a child identified with covid a few days before (yet still sent in to school) Is this o.k? Am I an acceptable casualty so that people don't have to home-school? and yes I do have children myself (and am home-schooling)

@Orchidflower1

No ok - the family of the child should be fined. 💐💐for you.
Fined?

I was thinking hung,drawn & quartered!

In all seriousness I don't know what should happen to them but more than a fine!

@lambsandlion. I guess your post isn't aimed at me because I don't want schools opened and I think the current provision needs scaling down.

I agree that ALL School staff should be in G2 of phase 2. (But it's quite a big group - school staff/nursery/CM's, police, foster parents, retail etc)

Can I ask how old you are? Any worrying underlying conditions you know of?

@Waxonwaxoff0. - what does your factory make?

lambsandlion · 24/01/2021 17:44

Yes tested positive, was waiting for results when sent in, positive came back next day. My symptoms started 2 days later, got a test. Results positive next day.

Do you think they should close & furlough staff? They did the first lockdown didn't they?

People are SO irresponsible.

Ah, one has popped up already! Never takes long for the negative brigade to arrive
Oh my God I've said repeatedly that I can't wait for the vaccine for DH and I (both teachers) but just vaccinating us will not sort out community transmission.

Selfishly though yeah, fuck it, vacc me up.🙄

Monkeytennis97 · 24/01/2021 17:49

Sorry to hear your news OP.

Those parents are arseholes.

They closed during the first lockdown for 6 weeks only and that was because the suppliers closed, not because they were ordered to. We have always been allowed to operate. I was furloughed for longer because people weren't really ordering anyway, sales were down by about 80% during lockdown 1.

This time they can't really close and furlough everyone as it would be an abuse of furlough. The government has specifically said that manufacturing and construction are to carry on as normal and there isn't a lack of work this time so they can't furlough people due to that.

I don't actually mind being at work, I prefer it to furlough. But I find people a bit hypocritical, so many people are ordering furniture - we are seeing record numbers - so they can't be that scared of Covid or they wouldn't want delivery men in their homes.

This thread is so miserable to read. It’s all ‘so what if you caught Covid teaching, I have to ...’.

Take care OP and I hope you have a mild case.

Yes I agree. A little empathy with the op wouldn’t go a miss.

They should be fined for breaking lockdown rules at the bare minimum

A parent sent her kid into a private primary after a positive covid test .

Said child has been permanently excluded from the primary school and the parent may be sued.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 24/01/2021 18:43

What selfish parents. Hooe you get well soon OP

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 24/01/2021 19:00

@Waxonwaxoff0

It's a shame they can't make it safer if they're going to stay open - surely they can furlough if they can't make it a Covid safe workspace.

As for people not being that bothered if they're ordering furniture. I'm very bothered, I'm very very careful, but if I needed furniture I'd order it and stand outside while they put it inside. I'd either not sit on it or cover it or something.

As it is,I do need sofas but I was trying to wait until the renovating was finished,but I hadn't accounted for that being on hold and a year of my arse being glued to the sofa so may have to order some, but that will involve going to see/sit on some and I'm not keen, so hoping these survive until the summer.

Not sure what to say, apparently 'take care' & 'stay safe' are winding people up...

OP, hope you're ok and make a quick recovery.

I have two jobs, one of which is at a school. I qualified for early vaccination with my other job and leapt at it. However, it's my job at the school which I feel the most unsafe and have had tears due to feeling unsafe. Really hoping those that are keyworkers who we really need to continue working in close contact with others will be pushed forward into the first phase.

Wow bet that stops any other parent thinking of doing the same.
Porcupineintherough · 24/01/2021 19:35

The truth is, it is acceptable to a lot of people. Doubly so if you have an underlying condition.

Flinstones · 25/01/2021 11:46

@Ponderousness

My brother caught it at work, he fixes cars. Is it acceptable for him to catch it because people can’t fix their own cars?

My uncle works in construction, also caught it at work - is that an acceptable risk because people want to live in new build houses?

Local tesco express had an outbreak amongst staff too, why is that an acceptable risk so that people can still have food?

It’s not ideal that people are catching it at work and there are no ‘acceptable casualties’ but the country needs to continue to run, people need to work to pay the bills and there’s an easily transmittable virus circulating - so its going to happen unfortunately.

Firstly I'm sorry your poorly. It is wrong that a child came in when they shouldn't. It is the story in every work place people go in hoping they haven't got it & spread it. It's not right but it is not just exclusive to teachers. Its every job that is not WFH that this happens & if you think that every other job except teaching is in full PPE and adhering to all social distancing you are very wrong. Everyone working has this worry not just teachers
Catyness · 25/01/2021 14:05

There is no personal responsibility taken by a % of the population for their actions spreading covid to others.

Teachers are putting themselves and their families at risk and it's a shame some parents can't be grateful enough to protect them. Sending a child to school with covid symptoms is horrendous and we need strong prosecutions for this. I'm so sorry it has impacted on you OP and hope you recover quickly.

My DSD is a yr 1 teacher and throughout all of this her class have come in talking about attending parties and sleepovers with cousins and friends from different schools. It's so wrong and so frustrating.

SeldomFollowedIt · 25/01/2021 14:09

People catch it in all sorts
Of work environments.

You’re no more at risk.

I am sorry you have caught covid. All children should still return to school though. I speak as a teaching assistant, who has close contact with children.

Abraxan · 25/01/2021 14:10

I'm so sorry and I hope you have a mild case.

Of course it's not right. And it will keep happening whilst ever there is no social distancing and no protection within schools.

I was ill with covid in October, most likely source was school. 3/4 of our staff ended up going down with it. I missed a lot of work, was in hospital and still not properly right and now have a long term health complication as a result. This is on top of the issues that made me CV beforehand.

Warning: you'll get some posters who will try to insist you caught it elsewhere and not at school. Some are adamant it never occurs at school.

Take care of yourself and give yourself chance to recover fully.

Abraxan · 25/01/2021 14:11

@Waxonwaxoff0

I work in a factory. 19 people at my workplace have tested positive. I still have to go in or I don't get paid. No one seems bothered about factories though and how easily Covid spreads there.
I also believe that you should be protected too. There needs to be some protective measures in place for anyone not able to work from home.

Are there no masks or screens up? Could this be organised?
I assume you can't have social distancing either?

None of this is acceptable, in any workplace.

Abraxan · 25/01/2021 14:17

There's not really much else that can be done to be honest. We wear masks when moving around, we don't have to wear them at our work stations. Ventilation isn't really possible as there are no windows! We can have the doors open but it's absolutely freezing at this time of year. Social distancing isn't always possible as we make furniture and things like lifting and upholstering big sofas are a multiple person job.

Well, to start with there are some things that could and maybe should be out in place from your statement here.

Masks everywhere. Take away the option to not wear them if not moving. Unless someone has a read exemption then wear them all the time.

Add screens between work stations.

Cold - wear thermals. That's what I was doing at school. Thermals, layers and fingerless gloves. Hopefully the weather will start to I,prove soon.

When SD not possible - masks and possibly add visors too as a secondary layer of protection.
