Son is just turned 2. Had a temperature of 38.5 at lunch time and managed to book a test for 4.30pm this afternoon

I woke him up as he had fallen asleep and been so sleepy today. He was 39.5
He went to bed at 6.30 as was pointing at his cot and iv been in to check him and he is dripping with sweat.
I'm beside myself. I didn't give him calpol before bed as the test was awful and me coming towards him with the syringe made him so upset as he thought I was going to do his nose again.Sad
I'm so worried

Hi OP, can you wake him and give him Calpol now? Have you phoned 111 for advice?

JC17fj74 · 23/01/2021 23:43

OP could you wake him to give him so calpol? You need to try and bring his temperature down, make sure he is cool and uncovered.
Have you taken his temp again now?

hermionieweasley · 23/01/2021 23:43

Hi OP.
It's so scary when they're ill, isn't it? Can you sleep on something on the floor in his room tonight to keep an eye on him, or have him with you in your bed without the quilt?

I'd wake him and give him calpol now, and call 111. You might be able to alternate calpol with nurofen for his temperature- they'd be able to give you that advice.

I always think it feels worse at night time, too. Stay with him tonight and you and he (I'm sure) will feel better in the morning

RLOU30 · 23/01/2021 23:48

Hi my love. You poor thing there’s nothing worse is there. My 2.5 year old has had his fair share of high temps during the pandemic and prior to it. I would defiantly give the calpol just so you can be sure the temperature is manageable. Maybe call 111 for advice if it doesn’t come down but I’m pretty sure you can alternate it every 2 hours with ibuprofen. Then I would probably have him in with me or sleep nearby so I could keep an eye. Has he had his flu nasal spray ? Fingers crossed it’s just a cold Flowers

xxxJess123xxx · 23/01/2021 23:51

Thanks for all your replies, no i havnt waken him and given him calpol as he is sleeping soundly just boiling hot. The heating isn't on and the window is on the trickle vent but I can't sleep for worry. He shares a room with his 5 year old sister. I have dug out the baby monitor so that is on but I think I am going to go back in to take his temp.
I'm so worried as he was a nicu baby and I had bad ptsd from the nicu and birth experience x

He had the spray at his 1 year jabs i believe, I can't actually remember x

Op he does need calpol, I think.

Happenchance · 23/01/2021 23:56

Hi OP, I really think you need to prioritise giving him Calpol over letting him sleep. You also need to check that he can be woken up.

xxxJess123xxx · 23/01/2021 23:58

OK I'm going in now x

Scottishskifun · 23/01/2021 23:59

Hi OP I know it's horrible waking them up but you need to get some calpol into him.
My toddler is terrible for temperatures, best thing is to scoop him up, cradle and gently syringe then rock back to sleep. Check his temp in 30 mins after the calpol

JengaJanga · 24/01/2021 00:02

Can you maybe sleep in the room too?
What is his temperature?
Was he easy to wake? Has he had wet nappies today? Drank enough?

SparkyBlue · 24/01/2021 00:03

OP could you get suppositories I find them great when mine have high temps as you aren't having to battle trying to get a sick child to take medicine . My one year old had an awful bout of tonsillitis this week and paralink and nurofen suppositories were great. If he wakes and is very hot just stand out at the door for a bit to cool him down and make sure he is stripped down to just his nappy.

Ewentheawakesheep · 24/01/2021 00:05

If he wont take from the syringe perhaps a spoon or in a cup?

Froglette16 · 24/01/2021 00:06

Op 39.5 temp is serious. Please call 111 for advice. And don’t over medicate. Usual dose paracetamol. 2 hours later ibuprofen. But don’t give more than that before you speak to a medic. Please call now. And please don’t leave him alone until you get advice. Keep us posted. Hand hold! X

RLOU30 · 24/01/2021 00:07

When mins didn’t used to take it I used to put it in the teet of a bottle and he used to suck it. Just incase you can’t get the syringe in x

Scottishskifun · 24/01/2021 00:08

If his temp doesn't start going down from 39 then call 111.
Make yourself a little bed next to his cot if possible set a alarm for a few hours time (assuming it's started to come down) and take his temp again. If you have child Ibruprofen then give that in about 3 hours time (before the calpol is starting to wear off) Ibruprofen is great at bringing temps down and lasts for about 7 hours.
If you don't have any in then set an alarm for 4 hours from calpol and give calpol again.
My son would regularly get to 40 degrees (pre covid) for 4/5 days with illnesses.

SquirtleSquad · 24/01/2021 00:10

Give him calpol on a spoon not a syringe if that's freaking him out! Tell him it's sweety juice Smile

ittakes2 · 24/01/2021 00:11

My son regularly suffered with high temps - he had over 30 x 40 plus temps before he was 4. Please don't worry. Whenever we were in hospital they would take all his clothes off down to his nappy. You don't need to wake him to give him calpol - just prop his head up and put the sringe in the corner of his mouth and squeza gently. If you have nurifen he can have that too. Better to space them out but in theory you can give close together.
If he is sweating be careful he does not get dehrydated, you can sringe water into his mouth when sleeping too. If you end up at the doctors at some point calpol suppositories are great as you can use them during their sleep.

Nameisthegame · 24/01/2021 00:15

If he drinks from a bottle mix the medicine and have them drink from that, my kid hated medicine but that’s how I got it in them. Could use a cup too of course

tiredqueen · 24/01/2021 00:18

@xxxJess123xxx you don't need to wake him to give him calpol. Put it in a syringe and put it in his mouth. He will instinctively try to suck it. Just administer it slowly and he will swallow it.

JengaJanga · 24/01/2021 00:19

Do not completely strip him!
Light pjs are fine.
If he has socks on, take them off.
If he has a winter sleep bag, change to a summer one

ADealingMummy · 24/01/2021 00:33

My Dd had a temp of 39.8 a couple of weeks ago. She felt boiling hot.
The gp said it was unlikely to be covid and subsequent test showed that it wasn’t. She was checked over by a nurse in a local designated covid site.
I opened the windows, took off her pyjamas, gave her calpol and sips of water. Anything to bring that temp down , eventually it did come down a little. After two days she was heaps better and I still have no clue what it was.
Definitely call 111 for advise.

ADealingMummy · 24/01/2021 00:35

Although she didn’t have her pyjamas on, She was under a light duvet cover.

Scottishskifun · 24/01/2021 10:57

@xxxJess123xxx How's your son doing this morning? Hope the rest of the night went OK and you get results back soon (fingers crossed they are negative).

My son (2 end of the week) must be in a sympathy mood as he woke up at 5am with a temp of 40 so has been for a covid test already this morning and the medicine has hit in so back being manic. (he is known for high temps so we have got used to dealing with them only if they don't come down we call the Dr's after many many trips to A&E Dr's told us he's just prone to it)

xxxJess123xxx · 24/01/2021 14:49

My sons temp has gone back to normal today strangly, but he is still not himself. Very lethargic and not wanting to get off the sofa which unlike him. He is asleep atm, no results yet. Test at a walk through site at 4.30pm x
