I live by the sea. Yesterday the seafront was HEAVING. It was just like a summers day in 2019, and there were just two police women walking around slowly approaching random people and asking if they were together. Two police women policing a beach with thousands of people hanging out in groups. Groups of people sat together, many others out drinking with a football or skipping rope by their side as their “exercise” excuse in case they were stopped. It was so busy that I had to turn around and walk a different way. For a split second I wondered if I’d missed lockdown being lifted. People running up to each other, hugging, high fiving.

Pathetic.

I don’t understand why there isn’t more of a police presence to stop this.

I suspect the increasing stretched police force are busy solving burglaries, murders, rapes, assault, drug offences etc etc than stopping every random person out for a walk. We simply do not have the man power to police everybody's daily exercise and manage the existing crime levels at the same time.
TBF you seem pissed off that other people had the same idea as you, a walk on the seafront !

Changedforthisyear · 23/01/2021 22:13

No, not at all. There is absolutely no way the entire population can be subject to monitoring and control at the level that is required to police the current measures.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/01/2021 22:15

I live by the sea too and also have 2 nearby country parks.

There has been a much higher police presence at the car parks for all of them today......

.......finally!

doireallyneedaname · 23/01/2021 22:16

Then the measures should be stricter and fines harsher.

I have relatives in Cyprus and in order to leave their house they have to send a text message to a specific number and until then get a response confirming they can do so, they cannot leave the house.

People weren’t just going for a walk along the seafront, there were groups of 10+ people sat around drinking, others with sound systems playing music and falling all over each other.

Where exactly do you expect this increased police presence to come from?

Our uniformed early shift this week had to isolate this week, as did another group.

Even without isolation, there are not the police to walk about and police how you want them to.

lljkk · 23/01/2021 22:20

We drove about 10 minutes, parked ~1 mile from the beach, which was empty when we got there. As was the carpark. The large children's playground has been bolted offlimits since March 2020.

Don't worry OP, we got a few hard looks in the seaside village. I'm sure the locals would have reported our car registration to the police if only they knew it.

Was a couple canoodling on a bench. I was happy for them.

southeastdweller · 23/01/2021 22:23

No, not in my large city in the north and I'm out and about every day. Even in supermarkets, staff don't bother stopping all the couples, they probably don't want the aggro.

lljkk · 23/01/2021 22:23

ps: where do U Live, OP? We had 4 layers on & the coast was freezing!
We walked further 2.5 miles to deserted town with empty chippy (no wait to be served). Indeed Felt like apocalypse had struck.

I got items from Boots which was other main reason for our outing, but mostly it was ghost-town atmosphere.

tatutata · 23/01/2021 22:25

It's not pathetic. It's been a year. This approach has no more road, good or bad though that may be.

LickEmbysmiling · 23/01/2021 22:25

I've been out twice since Jan 1st so I wouldn't know.

However I do think of all places, being by the sea, sea breeze would be one of the most safest places Togo out?

So you are out and about every day but its not ok for others to do so?
yawnsvillex · 23/01/2021 22:28

OP you've got a police officer on this thread telling you how it is ... I.e they have to isolate etc

Where do you think these police will come from?!?

doireallyneedaname · 23/01/2021 22:28

It was so busy that people were brushing each others clothing walking past, no way to keep any distance whatsoever. Nobody seemed bothered at all. All the coffee shops were open for take aways so there were several queues of 20+ people chatting away too, again no distancing.

OP posts:
yawnsvillex · 23/01/2021 22:29

Because @doireallyneedaname everyone's slowly realising they can't live like this forever.

You sound angry.

Pimlicojo · 23/01/2021 22:29

But you were there too - part of the problem? You can't complain about others being out if you were too. They have as much right as you to be there.

Nicknacky · 23/01/2021 22:30

So again, where do you expect these police to come from?

And there is nothing they can do about distancing anyway.

doireallyneedaname · 23/01/2021 22:30

Yes, I am angry. I’m tired of life the way it is, and it’s not going to get any better until our government take action and the general public take some personal accountability.

OP posts:
doireallyneedaname · 23/01/2021 22:31

Yes I can, because when I saw how crazy it was I turned around and removed myself from the situation.

OP posts:
southeastdweller · 23/01/2021 22:33

So you are out and about every day but its not ok for others to do so?

I never said or inferred that about others Confused. Other people can do what they want - I certainly am - I was being factual and answering the OP's question.

StepOutOfLine · 23/01/2021 22:33

Yes.
Police patrols making sure people aren't in large groups etc. Sending people home. Making sure masks are worn and people who are out and about have good reason to.
I'm in Italy.

Yet you was there yourself with exactly the same intention as many others Confused
TheDuchessOfBeddington · 23/01/2021 22:36

But you still went out?

doireallyneedaname · 23/01/2021 22:36

No, I wasn’t. I was going for my daily walk with my baby as I’ve done for the past 11 months. Yesterday people were sat around drinking, partying, socialising in large numbers. It’s not comparable.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 23/01/2021 22:36

@doireallyneedaname No answer as to where you think these officers should come from although you are quick enough to criticise the lack of policing?
