I live by the sea. Yesterday the seafront was HEAVING. It was just like a summers day in 2019, and there were just two police women walking around slowly approaching random people and asking if they were together. Two police women policing a beach with thousands of people hanging out in groups. Groups of people sat together, many others out drinking with a football or skipping rope by their side as their “exercise” excuse in case they were stopped. It was so busy that I had to turn around and walk a different way. For a split second I wondered if I’d missed lockdown being lifted. People running up to each other, hugging, high fiving.

Pathetic.

I don’t understand why there isn’t more of a police presence to stop this.

This is how people know about the Newcastle Wales Christchurch thing

Do you see any enforcement of the rules where you are?
Pimlicojo · 23/01/2021 23:33

I'm afraid I find that police posting with emojis incredibly immature. Not exactly professional.

Quaagars · 23/01/2021 23:35

Yes, I'm in the UK and see people rule following.
When I'm out and about, it's rare to see people without a mask on, even when they're not in a shop and are just walking outside.
I'm not seeing all these "heaving" crowds (one does wonder sometimes if some - not all! of the anecdotes on here are exaggerated for affect!)
People sometimes walking together, but I assume they're part of the same household as they're not big groups and just one or two/three people.

Heyahun · 23/01/2021 23:39

Who’s supposed to enforce it? The police? Am sure they have better things to be doing with their time tbh!

Heyahun · 23/01/2021 23:40

Also am in a busy borough of London - and there’s a lot of people around the park (nothing else to do and there’s a huge population here so it’s hardly surprising) do you think everyone should be given a time a lot for their walk or something? I don’t know what the solution is

Scottishskifun · 23/01/2021 23:41

In my area its pretty quiet but still have police walking around. I also live by the coast but its - 1 at the moment with a wind chill of - 6 even the hardy Scots don't sit in a beach in winter in this. Walk along it wrapped up then go home within 40 mins as its freezing!
Would be a different story if the ski slopes were open though! That would be packed!

RaininSummer · 23/01/2021 23:43

I see the local Police too scared to disband groups of 12 fellas in a basketball court. This happens frequently in one of our parks.

Hardbackwriter · 23/01/2021 23:43

@doireallyneedaname

Yes I can, because when I saw how crazy it was I turned around and removed myself from the situation.
Gosh you got a really good long look in before you immediately turned around, though, didn't you?
Scarby9 · 23/01/2021 23:44

The police have just driven by again. 11.30pm.

I haven't been out once since lockdown began without seeing police.

Stopping people going into the woods to sledge - checking if they were local.

Asking people to socially distance more in the queue at the take-away coffee van.

Parked in the lay by in the village (main route to the coast).

I even forced a police van to reverse quite a way down a very narrow lane yesterday. I had taken the scenic route (track mostly parallel to the main road) back from a legitimate trip out just for the excitement of it. I couldn't believe it when I ran into the van coming towards me about half way along.

I live in a rural village near a seaside town. Most people are locked in their homes after dark. I notced the police car just then because there hasn't been any other car since 8pm when the same police car went past before.

YonderTweek · 23/01/2021 23:45

I live by the sea but it's a bit of a crap muddy pebble beach affair that you can't swim in, so it's not exactly touristy. However, the town itself is beautiful so on a nice day people do come down from nearby cities and towns to stroll around etc, and I have seen absolutely loads of police vehicles around in the last couple of weeks. I think people have been pretty good in general (minus the flocking of the small groups of coffee sipping twats blocking everyone's way), so it's not been too bad, but perhaps it's because there is a police car parked by the coffee shops pretty much every day.

indemMUND · 23/01/2021 23:46

Underfunded and understaffed police vs mass public bloody mindedness. Even if the police had the manpower to intervene they face assault because people are actually that fucking ignorant that they can't see beyond them and theirs. I am in no way defending the government. The police struggling are a direct result of their cuts, the same as the NHS. Bojo can spew out what he likes. But it's all gone to hell.

DioneTheDiabolist · 24/01/2021 00:23

I live close to the city centre. It is very deserted and patrolled by police and Covid compliance officers, so working here.Smile

My sister lives beside the sea and says the car parks are jammers.Shock She has stopped walking her dogs on the seafront because of the crowds.

Robbybobtail · 24/01/2021 00:34

Robbybobtail And no one has been fined for sitting on benches....

Glad to hear it Nickynacky

doireallyneedaname · 24/01/2021 06:59

Yes I did, because to get away and back home I walked up to the road side which is off the beach; overlooking it. Not that I need to explain myself to you.

Our London borough has introduced "play safe champions" in the busiest playgrounds, including the one at the top of our road.

Currently in isolation so haven't seen them but they're there from 11am-3:30pm and are meant to be a community presence encouraging children to play safely and "increase compliance and hand out face masks". Sounds barmy to me.

BillyAndTheSillies · 24/01/2021 07:25

The town over from us, but a different borough had a different approach and parks a bus up the high street handing out masks and using a megaphone to broadcast social distancing reminders. They also use COVID marshalls to remind people to practice social distancing.

That particularly high street is permanently heaving. People chatting, meeting up in the playground, queues for the coffee shops up and down the high street. It's a very affluent area and people seem to be oblivious despite the borough having some of the highest numbers in London.

KatherineJaneway · 24/01/2021 07:31

I haven't seen any enforcement officers about. I did read about fines for those not wearing masks on the bus in the local paper (man was fined £200 as his excuse was wearing a mask made sitting on the bus too 'stuffy') but suspect they are planted to try and scare those who want to be maskless.

Local park has the kids playground open (no social distancing there) and the skate park section only had tape cordoning it off which, as you can imagine, was ripped down quickly and used by loads of kids.

yearinyearout · 24/01/2021 07:37

I'd love to know where you live OP, since in other areas police/community support officers have been moving people on and questioning people just for sitting on a bench with one other person.

Must be unseasonably warm where you are too, to have huge groups of people sitting around with a sound system going. Freezing here.

EileenGC · 24/01/2021 07:40

Yes.
Police patrols making sure people aren't in large groups etc. Sending people home. Making sure masks are worn and people who are out and about have good reason to.
I'm in Italy.

Same here, except I'm in Germany.
The police are also giving out fines to those not wearing masks on public transport (only surgical or FFP2 allowed), or in areas of the city where it's compulsory.
Health authorities also monitor quarantine when coming from abroad.
It's very well organised and our 7-day incidence has actually decreased after Christmas mixing, instead of going up. We're at the 100/100k mark which is extremely low for such a large city.

Thisyearcandoone · 24/01/2021 07:54

Same OP. While out for my permitted exercise recently, three different sets of people asked me where the coast path was - if you're local you should know! So annoying, why do people think the rules don't apply to them?

Avaganda · 24/01/2021 08:01

I was at King's Cross station last week and there were police everywhere! I was approached by two policemen asking me what I was doing there and they told me I shouldn't really be sitting on a bench to eat. They were nice enough and moved along once I explained I was there for a funeral and as there was no wake or eateries open I didn't have much choice but to eat a sandwich on a freezing bench in Janaury!

I live in a seaside town and haven't seen any police enforcement here. The beaches and woods are being enjoyed by lots of people but they are big enough to give lots of distance. It's absolutely freezing by the sea here though and we only manage about an hour of brisk walking before we have to go home!
