vaccine call up

Does anyone know the process for over eighties being called for their vaccine ? Do their GP surgery submit a list of names or is it done by NHS number or what or do they work down doing higher eighties first then lower ? My 83 year old dad has still not been invited for the vaccine, yet it seems most others in our village have ( I have been asking around friends etc ).

Glad you got it sorted, it does seem like a ridiculous and disjointed system, genius that the website let's you book anyway if within the age! Must be a relief though OP, and for your dad.

I was worried about queue jumping that way but it does say you can book if over 80, over 70 or CEV, so don't think we've done anything wrong by booking.

No you haven't at all, I am glad you managed to book. What I mean is it seems a bit silly that they seem to have several streams of notifying people, when in reality they could perhaps do something in tandem around online booking so people such as you and your dad don't have the uneccessary stress :) If he wasn't eligible it wouldn't have let you book.

Yes it just worries me that some older people who don't have online access ( or access to help from Mumsnet ! ) are probably just sitting waiting for a letter and maybe have no-one to advocate for them and are missing out. I think overall the vaccination programme is doing amazingly well but there clearly are some hiccups.

My relative aged 85 has heard nothing. They live in England but their GP surgery is over the border in Wales. Who will contact them? We don't want to ring the already burdened GP but don't want to be forgotten. Thank you

As in previous posts - it says wait for a letter to book but l just put in my dad's name and DOB and postcode and it gave an appointment time.

LadderBookcase · 23/01/2021 18:46

Babyroobs- did it give you an appointment time at one of the big hubs?

There are no big hubs near us, but it gave him an appointment at a community centre approximately 4 miles from where he lives.

First we called over 80s. No difference if you are 103 or 80 last week. This was before Christmas. Due to the short notice of getting the vaccine it was by text first. I then went in all day the Sunday before Christmas to ring those with no mobile.

After Christmas we did 75-79 then 79-74. Probably next week we will start on 70-74 and shielding.

The government started sending letters out to over 80s last week who haven't been jabbed yet.

We have worked so hard for all our patients since December.

Backbee · 23/01/2021 21:58

I bet you have been @RuthW, and thank you. But do in itself the way you have had to do it seems extremely wasteful- not your or your team's fault, but why text over 80s first? All of that sounds typical NHS inefficiency, again, not anyone working within the system at the coalface but jeeze. A

CoffeeRunner · 23/01/2021 22:06

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

My uncle and his partner got a letter from the NHS and went to one of the hubs. A week later she got a call from her GP inviting her to go for her vaccine. It doesn't seem very joined up in this area!
It’s perfectly joined up. Read my previous post.

The NHS England letters are being sent out purely to give an alternative option to be vaccinated further away from home for those you may not be happy to wait.

CoffeeRunner · 23/01/2021 22:07

Who not you

What do you mean “why text over 80’s first”?

It was to offer them the chance to make an appointment. Over 80’s first as they are the highest priority group.

We couldn’t do our group 1 (care homes) initially as we needed to wait for the more portable AstraZeneca vaccine.

osprey24 · 23/01/2021 22:36

Because a lot of over 80's have not got mobile phones, so will not receive a text message!

But some have and it was the quickest way to get patients booked in quickly. It certainly cut down the amount we had to ring massively. Why not text them? It saves time, gets patients booked in and doesn't cost the nhs anything, or are you thinking we text every patient individually?

Please see my reply below. Texting is massively quicker than phoning and lots of over 80s have mobiles.

Please read my post. She received a letter from the NHS. She had the jab. She then received a call from the GP inviting her to go for the vaccination she'd already had. She had not done nothing with the letter.

BigWoollyJumpers · 24/01/2021 10:59

@osprey24

If they haven't got mobile phones, they won't receive a text! Only those who have given mobile numbers to GP's, thereby confirming they are able to receive them, will get a text. Lots of carers/children have mobile numbers listed for their elderly parents as first points of contact, so that helps too.

Telephone calls are the next level.

Letters are sent out to everyone regardless, from the central NHS database. The systems are different.

I think we should not complain, that there are several ways of getting an appointment. All types of communication hopefully catch everyone eventually.

LadyGAgain · 24/01/2021 11:07

My step father is 81. He didn't receive a letter. Mum had an appt at GP for something else and asked when she was there. They said they had text him before Xmas and he hadn't responded so they assumed he didn't want it Confused. He never received a text. No phone call to follow up and no letter so in these circumstances I would call them. They are onto the 70-74 year olds round here.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/01/2021 11:08

My dad got a text this week, and booked in this week. We are all surprised, he's only 71.

As to 80year olds not having mobiles... Mobiles have been pretty common for 20+ years. Many in that age group are probably better at 'traditional' texting than teenagers etc who use WattsApp or Messenger.

Jenasaurus · 24/01/2021 11:09

@TheRuleofStix

My mum had hers on Thursday - I chased it in the end and it had turned out they were using an old phone number so couldn’t contact her Shock. Worth chasing.
Thats a really good point and one I can relate to. I missed out on surgery because although I had told my GP and hospital I had moved, the information didnt filter down so my appt was sent to my old address and sadly I now no longer qualify for the procedure. Have your parents moved recently OP?
WeeDangerousSpike · 24/01/2021 11:50

I'm CEV but 30's, just tried and it won't let me book, but my DGM in her 90s was only done on Friday so I expect our area hasn't started group 4 yet.
Bizarrely someone on my social media has posted that they got a 'left over' vaccine (they're not in one of the 4 top groups) from the care home their DP works at. I don't suppose anyone planning to have it would turn it down if offered one, I certainly wouldn't! But surely there should be proper procedures in place to make sure it's the most vulnerable getting it first, not just randoms who happen to be passing?! I also don't think I would have slapped it on SM, naming the care home, if I had managed to jump the queue either! Maybe I'm being unreasonable, I don't know.

LIZS · 24/01/2021 12:35

There are controls regarding moving the vaccines and how quickly it has to be used once open. If leftover it would probably otherwise have been wasted. Presumably the top up dose will be done as part of the same group.

Madcats · 24/01/2021 12:45

My DM(90) was phoned by her GP on Thursday to get vaccinated on Saturday morning.

Roll out of the vaccine in some counties/CCG seems to have been very slow/erratic.

You would have hoped that there would have been somebody within PHE keeping an eye on roll out (perhaps supported by a few teams of medics to travel round the county/country helping areas catch up.
