Will there be a plan for “spare vaccines”?

I understand that vaccine hubs have been giving end-of-day spares to family and friends, if they can get there at short notice. But surely they’ll run out of these “add on” people very quickly? I know our hub had 100 no shows one day last week. Surely there should be something better in place than grabbing a few random passerby's? After all, the government message is “people will die”, so surely there should be some formal procedures to use up the spare doses.

They were passers by.
What do you call them? These people weren't in the hospital, primarily to be vaccinated.

If vaccination staff went out of their dept, all throughout the hospital, different depts, any staff they found. Any maintenance men who were working in the hospital. Asked them all to come to the vaccination dept immediately.

What do you call that?

Oblomov, you asked why you weren't believed and I gave you my answer. It's your choice what you do with that information. Your second post with explanation was more believable but not necessarily universal. You could choose to learn from that eg. "when I express what happened x way some people don't believe me so when it's important I should try and express it y way."

Or you can get grumpy and repeat "Why do you all disbelieve this?" till you get an answer you like.

Personally I think you should email the editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post because he thinks Yorkshire is being penalised for being more efficient than London. He would lap this up.

I think even if 400 doses a day went to "the wrong people" that would be a tiny percentage of the rollout. If you are waiting anxiously for someone vulnerable to be vaccinated I can understand why this would seem very important to you. But for once the UK is doing something well. Would you rather swap our vaccination schedule with any other European country?

Just this once I'm pleased to be British. Move to Yorkshire! It will cheer you up.

No shows aside, I’m wondering how many of those who’ve been invited so far have declined. Anyone got any insight?

They weren't passers by then! They were people working in the hospital. Passers by implies just that, people passing by, ie just walking down the road.
Quick poll!
Would others on the thread agree with your definition of a passer by?

So you've gone from initially saying 40 friends got stopped and asked if they wanted vaccinating while they were just passers by. Then you get angry because this story sounds implausible and people doubt it. You clarify that they're not actually friends and were in fact working at the hospital, this sounds much more believable, but you're still not happy!

Thanks Greenery. I'm not miserable! But I do like Yorkshire. My dad lives outside Harrogate. Grin

If there's spare vaccines, a quick phone call to the office of the local nursery or school or supermarket would be a good call. Only one call needed and many deserving people could be there quickly. They're never going to be passing by as they're always in work

I work at a hospital if there's vaccines left over at the end of the day they go round the wards and offer to staff

Sometimes I post a very brief message on mn. Part laziness. Not normally contentious. So I don't expect people to analyse it, or be pendant about the exact words I use. Sorry.

I felt I had to explain, more detailed, once questioned.

One of my best friends works in a building which has been taken over by the NHS for vaccinations.
She was offered a jab the 1st (leftovers) and managed to get other colleagues jabbed in the next few days. They are all young and healthy and not in the priority groups.
My friend has shown me her vaccination card (via WhatsApp) She's not lying.
