Rising sense of panic

Does anyone else feel like this?

I was following the virus in China on Twitter from Jan 20 so I was glad to lockdown in March. I admit I was naive to the knock on effects on the economy and people’s mental health.

This third lockdown has knocked me for six. I’ve got a rising sense of panic. The affect on mental health, education, the economy. I just can’t see an end in sight anymore.

I feel so selfish and self centred as there’s plenty of people in a worse off position than me but I feel like I’m drowning.

I’m normally a half glass full kind of person and see the best in every situation but all I see is bleakness right now.

We’re never going back to how it was before 2020, get used to it, grab every moment you can when restrictions open up a bit, make the must of every minute x

snowballer · 22/01/2021 23:08

@Baileysforchristmas

It’s the first time they have locked down the worlds population waiting for a vaccine, there’s something not quite right about this they are not telling us
And what do you think that is?
BunsyGirl · 22/01/2021 23:09

This was taken from another thread:

This preliminary data from Israel suggests a 67% drop in cases and a 75% drop in hospitalisation the first group vaccinated

@Yohoheaveho BlushGrin I'm hoping! I have a holiday booked in October and December. I'm not sure about the October one but I'm hoping my crystal ball has got that one right!

tootsytoo · 22/01/2021 23:11

@Hazelnutlatteplease and people can exercise from home. I've actually become way stronger and fitter training at home compared to the gym. Do you really think when the gyms opened up it was full of obese people trying to lose weight? No, it wasn't it was full of gym fanatics!!

The poster that said it's madness to open gyms and zoos before schools is right. This country has collectively lost its mind

Baileysforchristmas · 22/01/2021 23:11

@snowballer i don’t know, I just had a feeling from the moment this started things were never going to be the same as they were before.

MumPops34 · 22/01/2021 23:11

This lockdown is having a bigger impact on me than last time, homeschooling, work, guilt I’m not doing enough, I’m drained, I don’t see my parents who live alone, unless I need to get them shopping, even then I worry about picking something up at the supermarket and passing it onto them, so it’s often drop shopping and go, I worry about losing them if they did catch Covid because they both have underlying health conditions. I am optimistic though that things will get better and eventually we will see the light at the end of the tunnel, however difficult that seems at the moment!

FascinatingCarrot · 22/01/2021 23:12

People can exercise remotely on youtube, dvds, streaming, Joe bloody Wicks, stationary bike, go for a walk, run, Zoom classes etc etc

People can contribute to zoos by donations, not just by visiting in person.

Gyms and zoos etc are not by any stretch of the imagination more necessary than teaching face to face. Online learning is hard - and not fun. And we need fun

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:12

which vaccine are Israel using?

bluebellscorner · 22/01/2021 23:14

I am feeling very down most of the time. I don’t think we will ever return to normal. Someone on this thread said masks will become the norm and that - and all that it implies - is simply terrifying. I don’t see the point of anything anymore.

tatutata · 22/01/2021 23:14

I know. It's depressing. I'm trying to avoid mumsnet as it's probably the worst place, but then can't stop myself. Had a nice chat with a friend today though, that helped. Also made cupcakes with the kids. Happy faces!

WhenPidgeonsCry · 22/01/2021 23:16

Look at the death rates. Of course the new variant is more lethal, the evidence is there

It's not really that simple. More people are dying because hospitals are overwhelmed. Just like the death rate for the other variant was higher last March than it was in September.

It’s the first time they have locked down the worlds population waiting for a vaccine, there’s something not quite right about this they are not telling us

What do you mean?

It's just the first time there has been such a rapidly-spreading virus and such a realistic chance of quickly developing a vaccine.

WhenPidgeonsCry · 22/01/2021 23:18

@GirlCrush

which vaccine are Israel using?
Pfizer-BioNTech
QuantumQuality · 22/01/2021 23:21

@StealthPolarBear someone told you that precious pandemics didn’t end?! Are they under the impression that a third of the population of Europe is still dying of Black Death?

bombaychef · 22/01/2021 23:22

I'm struggling today. Saw several other DC friends parents in the park today in passing and all looked broken and struggling. Most DC are really struggling with no social interaction so people are crumbling. I can totally see what people are surviving by bending rules when outside. No end in sight and virus mutants getting more deadly

Hazelnutlatteplease · 22/01/2021 23:23

I do agree being a big les mills fan in possession of everything from a barbell to an exercise bike.

However actually it's very much harder if you have joint issues. Someone like DD(14) struggles with most home exercise (believe me weve tried) and really needs a swimming pool. For Many people something like aqua aerobics may be the best sensible option. If you leave gyms and pools shut too long a great many wont reopen. That's a permanent loss the the economy at a time when we are going to be needing tax revenue in all forms, as well as the health loss.

Watchingbehindmyhands · 22/01/2021 23:23

I don’t know if it helps, OP, but in January I am always obsessed with sunset and sunrise times. At the moment we get 2-4 minutes more daylight a day. That’s at least an extra 14 minutes a week. I am always scrolling ahead with the weather and looking at that, calculating the extra daylight. As we move into February the minutes really start to increase and I find by Valentine’s Day I no longer need to make the calculations. I know I sound mad but it helps with the darkness and the sense that it goes on forever. I am really hanging onto that this year.

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:25

some pandemics haven't ended yet....the plague i believe is still active in some areas, flu....sars.....hiv/aids....all still around and ongoing

It's also January. Flu/respiratory deaths are always highest then in a normal year here.
GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:26

on my dog walks i'm constantly looking for signs of spring....thats my plant get back in my garden, thats whats keeping me sane

Hazelnutlatteplease · 22/01/2021 23:26

Yes this.

AndcalloffChristmas · 22/01/2021 23:27

Feeling similar today.

The briefing today knocked me off dry Jan too Blush

ImConnellschain · 22/01/2021 23:28

I could have written your exact post Op. I feel the exact same.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 22/01/2021 23:28

They may pop up occasionally. That doesn't make a pandemic. A pandemic has a specific definition which I think involves multiple continents or geographical areas.

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:30

whats stopping the plague becoming a pandemic again?
