Anyone in London area?

@MRex

Yes I know that, and I'd say that was included in my 'series of villages' comment (which is a phrase widely used for the phenomenon)

It just struck me as bit odd to talk about going to a town, rather than town centre or high street. The latter is going to a nearby business shopping area, but the former sounds like actually going to a separate item.

(Which is perhaps just me, and why I wondered about it out loud in the thread)

@RememberSelfCompassion

So sorry ICUnurse. It nust be so hard to be seekng what you do at work and then see/read about people continuing as normal.

Its strange how the media first time round was all full of the horror from the wards and shocking scenes in other countries and right now that doesn't seem to be as prevalent. I am still shocked so many are in school.

Most of the newspapers I read online have had long features on ICUs and other COVID wards over the last few days.
MRex · 17/01/2021 10:24

I'm sorry I tried to give you examples of what a Londoner would refer to as town centres as opposed to local shops @SquirmOfEels, I thought you were asking a genuine question.

Sunplanetearth8 · 17/01/2021 10:41

@Eastie77

Our area of London was named and shamed in the national press as a popular nearby market with lots of independent coffee shops is generally heaving, especially over the weekends with dozens of people milling around outside the shops chatting away, clearly not in bubbles etc. But they are in the main white, middle class, hipsters, MAMIL's etc so the police here are leaving them to it.

During the last lockdown hundreds descended on the nearby park for picnics and an indie band showed up for an impromptu session. Again no action taken.

Broadway Market/ London Fields by any chance? Grin
pinbinpin · 17/01/2021 10:42

I know what you mean about the bloody lockdown dogs. Surrey is the same. And all small yappy ones with owners that don't know how to control them.

MrsWombat · 17/01/2021 10:43

@SquirmOfEels London is definitely a series of small villages. My "village" is the area where I live and where I can walk around easily. It's actually called a village too. Grin It has hairdressers, takeaways small but expensive supermarkets. My "nearest big town" is 3 miles away and the major retail area of the borough with big supermarkets, lots of parking, plenty of transport links and the council offices which is where the lateral flow testing is located.

ThePlantsitter · 17/01/2021 10:43

Yes I don't dislike dogs but there must be a limit to how many one area can take!!

UndyingDeathdefying · 17/01/2021 10:53

“London has reached dog saturation point. Nobody get any more fucking dogs.”

Was out sledging with friends and their dog the other week. Other people’s dogs are best when there is just one of them in a big space.

MrsWombat · 17/01/2021 10:53

In my part of the world when we say "we're off to Lewisham" we generally mean Lewisham town centre but I would also understand that to mean the hospital even if the speaker didn't say that. Must be a wacky local thing.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 17/01/2021 10:53

My large bubble at school has burst. I am now self isolating again while managing home learning. I haven't even been to a supermarket in a month. It has literally been home and school and now it is just home for ten days.

But I am still alive, well enough with just a cold and I'm sure my test will be negative. I just keep looking at my ring that says this too will pass and I lift my mood.

wonderup · 17/01/2021 10:59

Thought it was my imagination, I love dogs but they are bloody everywhere.

Eastie77 · 17/01/2021 11:37

Sunplanet how did you guessGrin During the last lockdown it was like a carnival there most days with restaurants selling cocktails out of the window. I I suspect the weather is the only reason it isn't the same now. It's ridiculous!

Hm2020 · 17/01/2021 11:49

I’m about as central as you can get and there’s definitely more people out then last lockdown but still very quiet except for children’s parks but I personally wouldn’t take the risk more mask wearing in the streets I also seen a lot of ambulances out side houses.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 17/01/2021 11:50

I think everyone has gone to the parks instead. We live near Richmond park and have given up visiting because it is packed and like the Tour de France there most weekends. My husband has just driven down Priory Lane which is closed due to water mains repair and literally the road is full of cyclists either two and three abreast and chatting or racing each other down to the park entrance. It is dangerous.

The number of cyclists who have no idea how to cycle properly on Regents Park Outer Circle is terrifying too stayingalive I can’t get too worried about the number of people outside generally tbh, the risk of getting covid seems so minimal (see article linked which reinforces this). The likelihood of someone ending up having to go to A&E because of an incompetent/inconsiderate cyclist though...seems high if you just watch them for 5 minutes!

StillGoingToWork · 17/01/2021 12:23

I live in a "big town" in SE London. I totally get what the pp is saying. I come from an actual village in the Midlands. I see London as my County, my borough as my district council and my SE postcode as my town/village!

Wolfff · 17/01/2021 12:44

Notting Hill/North Kensington here, near Portobello which was packed yesterday.

A lot of people out and about generally, a lot of what seem to be local people going to work or shopping. A lot of what look like visitors wandering around on foot or on the Santander bikes.

Quite a few groups of teenagers out together, not social distancing. Apart from that the majority are trying to social distance and wear masks in shops etc though there is the odd one with a filthy mask slung round their chin.

This. We are in the absolute minority of people we know not to have gained a puppy in the last year.
crocsonmyfeet · 17/01/2021 15:46

@user2021 most patients here caught COVID from family members. Lots of multi-generational living in this area of London. Eg. son is a taxi driver/kids were all attending school/live with elderly mum + dad/plus adult siblings who also work in risky jobs etc. Only one person needs to catch it and then 6 other people are also infected.

Some vulnerable patients likely caught it from carers that visit them. Some younger patients in their line of work (teachers, Sainsbury's workers, midwife etc).

We seemed so close to safety with the vaccine roll-out so to see so many Londoners who didn't catch it in the first wave succumb now is heartbreaking.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 17/01/2021 16:03

I’m in Angel. It’s pretty busy regardless of the time of day/weather. Yesterday we left our daily walk until 5.30pm & it was just the same as any other pre-pandemic Saturday. More dog shit though, it’s everywhere. I drove to my nearest big supermarket in haringey yesterday about 7.30pm & Finsbury Park was still busy with queues outside cafes/restaurants. The Sainsbury’s was empty though. My friend lives in crouch end & she sent a picture of the High Street & it was rammed. Partly because the pavements are narrow & partly because every other shop is a cafe of food shop.

Hampstead Heath has turned into a giant, over crowded mud pit. Nothing else to do so everyone is walking the Heath. The rain and increased footfall has turned it into a bog.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 17/01/2021 16:14

Same as everywhere else.

Except:

We spend our days Looking out of the window watching the delivery drivers going round and round the streets looking for a way out of the Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, as they have closed loads of residential roads.

RememberSelfCompassion · 17/01/2021 17:09

Im not i london but theyve closed a load of roads here for the low traffic neighbourboods. The m/c in those roads love it. Everyone else ... not so much.

Hate it.

Getting a bus locally now impossible. Another way to force people on the airless Tube.

No sign of OP! Not the replies she wanted, I guess.
