Pimlico plumbers employment dependent on vaccination

www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jan/14/pimlico-plumbers-to-introduce-no-jab-no-job-work-contracts-covid

Apologies if this has already been discussed but haven't seen anything crop up.

Back at the beginning of the Covid fiasco this sort of thing was posited and dismissed.. Now it appears to becoming a reality.

The article does bring up whether it would be enforceable according to current employment legislation.... which begs the question about whether new legislation will be brought in.

Interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

Just wondering something. How can they prove if you have had the vaccine? Surely that will be easy to forge or is there a more scientific test you can take to prove you have antibodies? I hear this about flying too but you get given a piece of card with a handwritten date on it as proof at the moment

trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 08:49

@southeastdweller

his plumbers who're worried for their jobs and don't want the vaccine and think he's serious

The plumbers who are worried and don't want the vaccine (for whatever reason) will be speaking to lawyers in no time, you can bet on that

Myalternate · 15/01/2021 08:51

Presumably, it could avoid insurance claims against his firm if someone claimed the contactor passed the virus to them? According to an article I've read, he's planning to pay for his employee's vaccinations and any that want to work as contractors will have to prove they've had the vaccine.

trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 08:51

And if he is hiring them as 'self employed' when they shouldn't be, he has two problems in the making (not one)

trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 08:52

@Myalternate

if someone claimed the contactor passed the virus to them

How would anyone prove this? It's ridiculous

Mousehole10 · 15/01/2021 09:05

There’s going to be loads of things in the medium term that require the vaccination. Travelling to certain countries and flying (can bet the Aus will require this), certain jobs, large events, even some family and friends only seeing people with the vaccine. People who don’t want it need to accept that there will be limitations. Once the pandemic properly ends globally it should be less of an issue.

Calmandmeasured1 · 15/01/2021 09:06

Difficult one. On one hand I don't agree with vaccinations being mandatory, on the other, if I have to attend hospital, whether as an inpatient or an outpatient, I don't want to be treated by or around anyone who hasn't been vaccinated.

This was on the BBC yesterday www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55654229 Slightly less hyperbolic than the Guardian"s style.

WalrusWife · 15/01/2021 10:13

How would that work for staff who were pregnant for example?

ilikegrapes21 · 15/01/2021 10:30

Mullins is just mouthing off to get some publicity as usual! There is no way he can mandate this especially as it's very unlikely under 50s will get a vaccine this year.

Ch3rish · 15/01/2021 10:33

@WalrusWife

How would that work for staff who were pregnant for example?
I know MN users tend to be of the glass half empty variety but the number of plumbers starting work for him in the future knowing they are pregnant I'm going to hazard a gues could be counted on less than 1 finger per year

Someone might start between conception and taking a PG test but if they thought they might be surely they'd check first

trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 10:53

@Mousehole10

People who don’t want it need to accept that there will be limitations

This is just an expression of wish. Why are you stating it as fact?

Also, can you explain why you want to subject fellow human beings to medical treatment they do not want (specially when it has not been proven that these vaccines prevent transmission)?

ExConstance · 15/01/2021 11:08

If this is mandatory for new recruits I'd agree it is sensible. In care we can't offer a job to anyone who refuses either testing or vaccination, though we can't force existing staff. There seem to be no logical reasons to refuse a vaccination, unless you have certain allergies, apart from being totally unreasonable.

rosie1959 · 15/01/2021 11:10

His company his choice
Plumbers have the choice who they work and having seen a little and read a little about this company these plumbers are very well paid for their services many well over 100k a yearn

trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 11:12

@ExConstance

In care we can't offer a job to anyone who refuses either testing or vaccination

Maybe candidates will look for a job somewhere else (perhaps with higher salaries even)

I don't think anyone will be refusing testing?

24HoursInPoliceCustody · 15/01/2021 11:15

He is so full of himself, this will backfire on him and I look forward to it.

trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 11:15

Mr Mullins said he had set aside £800,000 to pay for private vaccinations, but estimated costs more in the region of £100,000

Whatever it costs, I will pay, he said. I would pay £1m tomorrow to safeguard our staff

He will not be paying £££ from his own pockets, will he?

I hope customers see such mavericks for what they are and boycott 'businesess' who apply these bullying tactics on their 'employees' rather than contributing to subsidise 'policies' they don't agree with

24HoursInPoliceCustody · 15/01/2021 11:16

@AgentProvocateur

I think it’s fair enough if your employment is going into (potentially vulnerable) people’s houses.
Rubbish, it's just his way of getting publicity, he is a vile man.
trulydelicious · 15/01/2021 11:17

@rosie1959

these plumbers are very well paid for their services many well over 100k a year

Then perhaps customers are paying over the odds for these 'services'

His customers have a choice whether they use his services obviously many are very happy with his plumbers or he wouldn’t be making so much money

NastyBlouse · 15/01/2021 11:30

100% a PR exercise from Mullins. I'd be flabbergasted if this ended up happening, in reality.

He's just flapping his gums in the press because I would imagine there's been a huge drop-off in people calling plumbers out over the last 10 months because people don't think it's 'safe'.

He's introducing the narrative that plumbers especially Pimlico Plumbers are to be trusted.

Bimbleboo · 15/01/2021 11:31

Forgive my ignorance. But why is this particular plumbing company, and I’m particular, this Mullins guy who owns it... given so much televised air time? Wasn’t he on Jeremy Vine and the likes way back in summer saying that he didn’t want staff furloughed because they were lazy and just getting used to being paid for nothing etc etc.

Just intruiged why he in particular gets so much tv time? Am I missing something?

RhubarbTea · 15/01/2021 11:38

Of course it's just a PR exercise, it's bullshit with no legal standing and he knows it.
The issue with this kind of silliness is that it sets a precedent for other companies to do the same, and normalises the idea of needing the vaccine to do just about anything. Which is utterly bonkers and which I am totally against.

stuckhereontheinside · 15/01/2021 11:40

How on earth will this be possible when half of the population are not even on the 'priority list' and may not the vaccination for a long time.
