Anyone else becoming irritated by STAY HOME

Lemons1571 · 14/01/2021 09:02

It’s starting to do my head in. We are all At Home. Haven’t left since Sunday. Apart from DH who is a keyworker so no choice. Haven’t even ventured near the mud sodden garden. How much more can we STAY HOME? Are we doing it wrong? Perhaps I should shriek any time someone goes within a foot of the front door. And putting the bin out - forget it!

Yet the media still keep on, Stay Home Stay Home Stay Home, accompanied by endless clips of makeshift ITU’s in children’s wards. Wtf do they want? Us all to lock ourselves in the under stairs cupboard?

Am beginning to think if the messaging carries on like this, everyone will reach fatigue point and switch off from it all. Ok I know I’m being a mardy cow and unreasonable, but does anyone else feel like this?

If the government gave a shit about saving the nhs, perhaps they should have funded it properly in the first place.

I completely agree that our NHS should be properly funded and the workers well paid.

How can you run an NHS always ready for a pandemic? You can't have empty beds and wards and staff kicking about doing nothing just in case.

Prior to this pandemic, I would guess that if you asked most people where more money should be spent and gave them a choice of either cancer or pandemics, practically everyone would say cancer.

I hope lessons have been learned but I'm not holding my breath.

salmonskinjerky · 14/01/2021 13:54

I feel irritated by the "STAY AT HOME" messaging too, but because I have a non-essential job that I cannot do at home but have no choice but to do, for yknow, money.

The situation feels quite incongruent.

If lockdowns work how come countries that didn’t lock down have less cases? In the U.S. they compared two states with similar demographics. One locked down, the other didn’t. They both had identical cases. The virus is going virus.[/quote]
Which countries would they be?

The virus is transmitted by humans, it doesn't transmit itself.

I'm irritated as I think the message should be 'Stay AT Home'.

This is a valid grievance imho
rookiemere · 14/01/2021 14:14

@Missushbb I have just started The Thursday MurderClub which is sufficiently distracting !

Watermelon999 · 14/01/2021 14:15

“I only leave the house to walk the dogs or take the kids out for a walk. I'm sick of being made feel guilty every time I leave the front door. I'm not spreading covid in the massive empty woodland right next to my house.”

This is me ^. Apart from my work (nhs) our family are literally in the house all of the rest of the time apart from a daily dog walk or run. We even do that early to avoid others.

We are getting pretty much all our food delivered too.

It’s beyond irritating to me too.

Yes this annoys me too, in fact everything annoys me at the moment!
Eng123 · 14/01/2021 14:19

I just wish they would have spared to four extra characters to make it "STAY AT HOME" ... I spend the first three weeks sternly telling my house to not move until I came home😂

Eng123 · 14/01/2021 14:19

Ok I saw I'm not as original as I thought!

Whenwillow · 14/01/2021 14:24

It seems a lot of employers are driving this. It's all very well saying work from home, but if your boss won't allow it, what can you do?
I have livestock to care for so I'm out every day. I don't stop anywhere though.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 14/01/2021 14:29

I don't see what there is to get irritated about. If you're staying at home, then it should just wash over you. If you're going out unnecessarily it might make you think twice. If you're going out for daft reasons you'll probably get annoyed by them reminding you that you're being a twat.

@WombatChocolate that made me laugh. I don't think I've used a toilet, other than my own, since February! I hadn't thought about it until your post 🤣🤣

tatutata · 14/01/2021 14:31

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants I think the pou it's just that lockdowns work in countries where people are used to having no rights and being beaten up by the police, of which there are millions. I find it quite strange when people suggest they would like to live like that. I'm sure it's fine if you're not on the wrong side of the police state through no fault of your own. Like maybe being an Uighur or a Chechen.
In societies which have been strongly influenced by enlightenment ideas of knowledge, property and freedom, people question things more, because they are used to having that right. It prevents governments from running away with their power. That is reasonably important. I am pleased for example that Parliament can hold the government to account. Lockdowns only work for as long as they are in force and enforceable. If you have a look at the numbers in France or Spain, then yes, they were low when the police was out for six weeks. Then, if my sisters accounts of chamonix in the summer are anything to go by, people went absolutely mental and partied like they never have. That's the problem, human nature is just not made for this and it only works if you threaten and punish. Also, I think China is lying.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 14/01/2021 17:16

It’s not a personal message, it’s a message for all.

They need to keep stating it as so many haven’t gotten the message and are leaving the home do all sorts of non essential reasons.

namesnamesnamesnames · 14/01/2021 19:46

The lack of 'at' does annoy me.

southeastdweller · 15/01/2021 08:08

All their shit slogans mean fuck all to me.

Boogie5678 · 15/01/2021 08:14

“stay the FUCK HOME” makes me want to reply “ FUCK THE FUCK OFF”

PlumsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 15/01/2021 08:27

@Bilgepumper We should have some spare capacity. We have zero. We have run everything right to the limit and can't cope with a normal winter / flu season.

Basically we always have bed capacity running very high to save money so there is no wriggle room. Any unoccupied beds have been seen as a waste and cut.

We now need to permanently increase capacity to avoid these economically devastating shutdowns. Yes it will take time but I would like to see a plan to do this immediately.

What that means is that in the summer when we don't have much covid or flu, the extra staff would be relaxed, take their annual leave. Patients would have more time spent with them. Hospitals would catch up on less urgent operations.

In the winter especially in a bad flu / covid year hospitals would still be really busy but would manage better.

ZoBo123 · 15/01/2021 08:35

If we better funded the NHS we could have some flex in the system to allow for bad flu/viruses potential pandemics we also could have better early prevention work and have a healthier population. Obese people have a higher risk of Covid for example. We put some of the extra strain on ourselves by having an unhealthy population.

PlumsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 15/01/2021 08:36

And I don't think there should be any sort of legal requirement to stay at home (with loads of exceptions) anyway.

It is a dreadful message likely to damage people's wellbeing and in no way should it be backed by the law. Complete over reach by the government.

If all the indoor spaces are closed, if essential shops are asked to limit numbers and if gathering in groups is prohibited why does anyone have to stay at home? It is not people walking around outside (or even sitting on benches) that are driving this pandemic.

And even if they were, it should be masks before stay at home.

And stay home is missing an at.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 15/01/2021 09:15

Interestingly I commented that it should be stay AT home to DD and she said she didn’t see why then said that if “stay home” isn’t correct then what about “go home” or “stay out”?

In that context I can see that “stay home” is concise and understandable.

PlumsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 15/01/2021 10:02

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou I think because stay is always stay at when used with nouns.

Stay at home
Stay at school
Stay at work

If it isn't a general location we use an article as well

Stay at the hotel
Stay at the zoo

Only with directions / prepositions do we leave out the at

Stay up
Stay down
Stay in
Stay out

You are taking the announcements too personally. Step away from social media or wherever you are seeing this.

“Basically we always have bed capacity running very high to save money so there is no wriggle room. Any unoccupied beds have been seen as a waste and cut.”

Yes I agree, this is what happens. It’s the same with staffing too and waiting lists. There is no surplus at all. It’s frustrating.

Once we worked really hard to get our waiting list down in our department. We were really proud of our achievements and felt that finally our patients were getting what they needed in a more timely manner. We were “rewarded“ by our upper management by having our clinic times and staffing level cut. It was awful, and unfortunately it has made me realise that we have to keep a longish waiting list to keep our staffing levels intact.

This is true and good advice, it is difficult though as when you’re feeling like that you can be drawn to it more!
