Will they ban Meeting one person for Excercise?

The area i takee my daily walk isnt very safe and it feels safer to walk in a pair.
I'm really hoping they don't stop it.
I know they have to do what it takes to bring infections down and I will always comply, with the rules but I'm crossing fingers that they won't change the excercise rule.

IDepending on where a person lives, it could be unsafe for some single people to be out walking and excercising their own.

I think part of the problem is that it's not possible to meet socially distanced in many. Cases , our pavement isn't 2m wide

I am hoping they say yes but you must wear a mask

JazzyGeoff · 13/01/2021 16:01

I hope not- I go for a run with my friend 2 or 3 times a week. I'd constantly bail on myself if I had to do it alone Blush Grin

Covidcovid · 13/01/2021 16:05

I guess part of the problem is do people keep 2m away? I know I do, we walk on a wide farm track and keep different sides of the track but yes in crowded places or narrow paths it can be difficult.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/01/2021 16:16

I think they will. So many are using it to socialise with numerous contacts and how many are actually exercising and keeping 2m apart? It’s an easy rule to amend as people can still exercise alone or with household members.

KeyworkerSchworker · 13/01/2021 16:24

I hope so. So many of my friends have asked me to walk with them for a chat and I could have seen a different person in my medium sized city everyday, each of whom could have gone home to their family.

As I live with 3 teens and my DH who could do the same, that’s a big risk. It’s been quite pressurised saying no without sounding horrible.

Potentially 35 contacts in week without batting an eyelid.

And how many cases are stemming from people going for a walk with one other person? I'd love to see the data. I bet its absolutely minimal.

I'm assuming you dont live on your own? How about the mental health impact on people who live on their own, being told that they're now not able to even go for a bloody walk outside with another human being? Screw them though, right? Only covid matters.

DownWhichOfLate · 13/01/2021 16:34

At least those jumping up and down in anger at people meeting up are getting a bit of exercise / raised heart rate..

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2021 16:34

I went out for a walk at the weekend. There were lots of households of 10 or 12 people🤔

Me and Dh were about the only pair

Even if they ban meeting one person for exercise a household can still meet.

So people who are prepared to try and bluster and say they're a household of 12 will still do this. Of course it's possible, some student houses can be this big, my friend's son is in a house of 10.

Single people can form a bubble though so can do far more than just exercise with another.

ultragroupie · 13/01/2021 16:46

@DownWhichOfLate

No. The government need to crack down on places where the virus actually spreads. Exercise with a friend is not that place. And is also hugely beneficial both physically and mentally.
This!! It’s madness if they stop people exercising with one other person
PurpleDaisies · 13/01/2021 16:47

The word “exercise” is only there (in my opinion) to stop people having a picnic.

A social walk is tiny in terms of risk and massive in terms of mental health gain.

From metro.co.uk mon 11th jan:

*The majority of outbreaks examined by Public Health England last week came from care homes, where 749 incidents were recorded.

A total of 166 came from workplaces, 79 from hospitals, 33 were from educational settings such as schools and 11 were from food outlets. Some 257 incidents were recorded as being from other settings.*

I'm not sure what constitutes an outbreak though, it doesn't say.

The amount of people round my way who ‘exercise’ while carrying a coffee, strolling along at a snails pace and chatting is astounding!

What’s wrong with that? Why does everyone need to be training for a marathon?
DownWhichOfLate · 13/01/2021 16:51

@TheFlis12345 - and what were you doing out and about?

Banning them from walking with a friend would make no difference to their walking pace. I agree most people stroll but they do that whether they're on their own or with household members or a friend.

Unless the government stipulates by law that you have to walk at 4mph, people will continue to walk at a snail's pace.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 13/01/2021 16:53

@PurpleDaisies because it's not at all about exercise then. It's about meeting your mates for coffee/a chat. Also, people standing on the street yakking. Takes all the pavement up.

puffinkoala · 13/01/2021 16:54

Just the difference between a recreational stroll (90% of the population, whether with company or not) or a brisk walk (the other 10%).

Providing you stay 2m apart and are outdoors, it's not a big risk though is it. Just say no if you don't feel comfortable but the risk from an outdoor 2m apart walk is minimal hence why they've allowed it!

I’ve met a friend for a walk today. Both had coffee. Both observed social distancing. No stopping on pavements. If we had been running we would have needed to stop for rest breaks.

I don’t think anyone has the right to police my motivation for going for a walk, only whether I’m observing the rules when I’m doing it.

Walking is exercise. You don't need to be running or speed walking.

I'm pregnant right now and so can only really stroll. But it is exercise for me and I love having that bit of outside time in my day. I even sometimes.... Stop for a minute...!

I know pregnancy is a little different but even before hand, I never speed walked around the forest trail or reservoir round here where I walk, I strolled/walked at a normal pace and yes even sometimes took a hot drink. It's still exercise!

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 13/01/2021 16:59

It’s not allowed in Wales, nor is driving to exercise. I don’t agree with it but that’s how it is.

AlexaShutUp · 13/01/2021 17:01

I hope they ban it. Most people I know are using it to socialise rather than exercise. If you live alone, you're entitled to a support bubble, so could you exercise with them?

I do that with my mum but we were on the way to a shop. Not everyone out is exercising.
