Because I've just been to tesco and brought a kettle. I've just had a bloke when I was stood in front to pay. Mumble about an 'essential kettle'

Did he know why I had to buy it. Did he plums!
It's not so I can go home and have a relaxing cuppa. Its so I can make formula for my baby. Because last night our kettle went bang!
We had to get hot water off the neighbour for this mornings bottle so I could then run to grab one.

What's essential to some isn't to others.

Yes I think there's prob a fine line but I wish people wouldn't judge

nobody cares about retail staff enough to give them more than a passing thought do they

Judging by how many break the rules, bend them or see no harm in having a social life in shops I think many simply mustn’t care about anything but their own wants.

youkiddingme · 14/01/2021 19:18

I'd call a kettle essential. I personally would struggle with pouring from a pan safety wise, but a kettle is safer for everyone. Aldo a kettle cuts itself off, a pan can be forgotten. I buy herbal or fruit teas for but I don't drink tea or coffee - what's the difference in terms of essentialness? I had to buy a pack of plastic shot glasses this week - they are for taking medication - I can't see well enough, nor have steady enough hands, to use a spoon.

Rhumatoidwarrior88 · 14/01/2021 19:18

My nephew is SEN and eats blue crisps (cheese and onion) , Cadbury rolls, peppers , oranges and vegetable curry . These items are essential to him being fed as he is very sensitive to food . He literally eats nothing else . If I or my sister were to need to replace one of these items it would need to be done for fear of meltdown. So essential is relative to a family .

What's more important is one person from one household or bubble does the shopping for everyone, rotate it round the adults weekly but the essential shop should just be done by one person . (If they live alone with one child that's different)

I couldn't give a fudge what you buy aslong as your wearing a mask , are safe , symptom free and not going with one two or three other adult members of your family

@sofiaaaaaa

This is why I use the app, no one gets to judge what in my buying or not as it’s immediately hidden in my bags!
Unless you’re my DH who got picked for a random check and had everything pulled out and rescanned 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣
numberoneson · 14/01/2021 19:29

@HermioneWeasley

Can’t humans go about 3 weeks without food before starving to death? And given we all have drinking water in our taps, we should only be allowed out once every 2.5 weeks to buy savers porridge oats to make a watery gruel with at home.
Completely reaalise you're being rightfully sarcastic, but just for the record, we DON'T all have drinking water in our taps - my water is from my well, and not safe to drink :-)
terrimom · 14/01/2021 19:35

HermioneWeasley You made me laugh! I can barely go from breakfast to lunch without feeling like I'm starving when I'm home! I'd never make it for three weeks! I just made some watery gruel with instant oats, although I added blueberries and cinnamon, because they are essential to me. We have the same issues of excessive judging here in the USA and our covid levels are just ridiculous! So, yeah, judging is not the answer - lol! It's not the items you buy that have any impact on covid spreading, it's the trip to the store in the first place that can spread it. Do what you can - wash hands, wear a mask, maintain distance, etc. and ignore the judgy ones. Thanks for a laugh though and some perspective. :)

Even in first lockdown I was moaning about not being able to buy clothes, my dd within 2 weeks of the beginning of lockdown had grown out of almost everything.... she had no bras that fitted and was moaning her knickers were too tight, leggings were fighting with her ankles.... and obviously we had to wait for everything to re-open.... problem is it’s happened again.... fortunately we can order bits online this time ( although trying to find pjs that don’t look babyish is a chore)

He’s a complete idiot, kettles aren’t something you buy for fun because you fancy having 2.
😂😂😂😂
Mummabear89 · 14/01/2021 19:46

Just have to say to all those who commented that the OP should have boiled water in the microwave or pan. First of all boiling water in a microwave is extremely dangerous for making baby formula as it doesn't heat evenly and can cause multiple problems for the baby or potentially scald the babies mouth then the OP would have been judged for harming their baby or making their baby unwell. Second of all you shi try boiling a pan of water and making formula whilst trying to comfort a hangry, screaming baby, whilst being sleep deprived without causing yourself or the baby harm. Perhaps OP didn't have a clean pan to hand, perhaps their cooker recently broke and they are waiting for delivery of a new one, perhaps they don't have any plans as they only cook in a halogen oven, perhaps they don't own a microwave. By making these comments you are being as judgemental as the gentleman who muttered 'essential kettle' without knowing a person's full situation you have no right to judge the OP for the action that they took to make sure that their child was fed. We need to be kind to each other. The world is in a horrible way and making comments like this could cause irreversible damage to the OP's mental health who probably already feels awful enough for having to go and buy a new kettle. BE KIND and DTAY SAFE people

Ddot · 14/01/2021 19:50

Mine broke during lockdown too, took three weeks to come. I have a stove kettle packed away for emergencies (whistle is so annoying) it's a good thing to have at the back of your cupboard.

CrankyFrankie · 14/01/2021 19:51

Twats, the lot of em!

Ddot · 14/01/2021 19:52

A cup of tea in the morning is essential very essential, life saving infact

Lovely1a2b3c · 14/01/2021 19:55

Of course a kettle is considered relatively essential by most people.

If you are using it for the purpose that you are using it for then it is absolutely, fundamentally an essential item/as essential as formula.

nicky7654 · 14/01/2021 19:56

Blimey don't even give it any more head space. The man is a twat!!! You needed a kettle and bought one. No big deal. Congratulations also xx

Wait, what? Some people are in a bubble that is 50+ miles away and might only see them every couple of weeks. Why on earth should they be doing shopping for them? That is a rule you have made up.

Christmasfairy2020 · 14/01/2021 20:02

Well its heavy thick snow. And the amount of people out is ridiculous. Cars stuck etc. Even schools for my kids on key worker basis have closed! Stay home

So all the 'non essential moaners' what do you class as non essential
saleorbouy · 14/01/2021 20:13

To save a trip to the neighbours you can boil water in a saucepan on the hob or in the microwave if your kettle packs up. Of course a kettle is much more convenient for everyday use.

amispeakingenglish · 14/01/2021 20:26

Surprisingly, you can boil water in ...... A PAN... YES. How amazing.

Mind you if you want a new kettle don't see why you can't get one as its in Tesco and you're there anyway. But if people want to be picky you can technically manage without one.

amispeakingenglish · 14/01/2021 20:28

And if you want to be really picky, unless you have to feed formula for medical reasons or you can't breast feed, then formula isn't essential!!!!!!

amispeakingenglish · 14/01/2021 20:31

I have two!! One hob, one electric. Electric in storage as for years we had a hob one and both the male members of our family put the previous new electric kettle (s x2) on the hob! Melted them. The saw a lovely blue electric, so keeping for the day they a. peg it, b move out!!

twinklestar2 · 14/01/2021 20:35

A hot cup of tea of DEFINITELY ESSENTIAL!

Sueparky · 14/01/2021 20:44

I really do not notice what others are buying and have never had anyone say anything negative about what I'm buying. I do limit the frequency I go the supermarket but if I needed something " non essential" whilst I was there I would just buy it. I would not take kindly to others commenting about it.

SallyB392 · 14/01/2021 20:45

'Essential' is such a subjective descriptor, what is essential for one person is optional for another. Taking our dog out is for us essential, but we k n ow others who just let their dogs out into the garden. Who's right?
A kettle? Tea bags? Coffee Filters? Ice Cream? Meat? Veg? Booze? I bet at least one of those will be a non essential for everyone, but that same thing will be essential for someone else!

margesimpson40 · 14/01/2021 20:56

You know what I say.... Anything in the supermarket from the bashed tin of coffee to the bullet vibrator is essential. What's essential to Mrs brown isn't essential to Mrs white and what's essential to her is consider a luxury. Whatever gets us through the night atm.... Essential to me... To have a varied and massive tinned tomatoes and hot sauce collection... Frank's is the best hot sauce and to have my wee quid candles from tesco and my java filtered coffee from aldi.

MushMonster · 14/01/2021 21:01

It is an essential item. Kettles, microwaves, toasters, clothes, bedding, shoes, coats...
Name it. You may need any of these at short notice for a very important issue. And if a essential shop has them there, you should never be banned from purchasing it.
It is the rule out of all this that I will never forget for how callous it is, and especially the people that go around saying this or that is non essential! They lack of imagination, and empathy, where is the care for someone who needs something for a child or someone in hospital? Or even just to have a hot cup of tea or a pot noodle?
