Because I've just been to tesco and brought a kettle. I've just had a bloke when I was stood in front to pay. Mumble about an 'essential kettle'

Did he know why I had to buy it. Did he plums!
It's not so I can go home and have a relaxing cuppa. Its so I can make formula for my baby. Because last night our kettle went bang!
We had to get hot water off the neighbour for this mornings bottle so I could then run to grab one.

What's essential to some isn't to others.

Yes I think there's prob a fine line but I wish people wouldn't judge

Surely you meant bought a kettle, not brought?

Surely you're only pretending to question what the OP meant, because you enjoy pointing out people's mistakes?

My 9y/o daughter has ASD, epilepsy and a few other health condition. She requires daily medication to stay alive. I’m a single parent and work full time in a keyworker role.
She’ll only take the meds with a specific apple squash in a specific carton from Tesco.
During the first lockdown I was shouted at for bringing my child and told to leave her in the car. I explained about epilepsy and the man replied with “ewww, a fucking mong” to my daughters face. A Tesco worker laughed.

I would also go a couple of times a week specifically to buy this item. They come in a 3 pack and I could only buy 2 at a time. A security man said to me that I “needed to stop coming just for drinks” explained about autism and restrictive food/drink intake and how the medication for her epilepsy was to save her life so we didn’t have a choice. His response was “have you tried giving her a slap? I hate parents that just feed their kids chicken nuggets and chips”. Which is completely ironic because my child eats about 10 fruit and veg a day and doesn’t like chicken nuggets and chips.

I just hate judgemental arseholes to be honest.

Has anyone said bread and milk yet? Grin

Elsie1966 · 14/01/2021 18:07

I'm absolutely 100% with you on this op
What is not essential to some is for others people should not judge

kimmy121 · 14/01/2021 18:08

I had to grab a plain black dress from tesco.
The woman in front was muttering about "ridiculous that people are buying non essential, clothes and that sort of thing" whilst glaring and then eye rolling at me.

I just smiled at her, wasnt in the mood.

The checkout lady was explaining about how everyones circumstances are different, so it's not up to us to judge....and the customer stopped going on.

When I got served I explained it was to wear to my nans funeral the following day, because the panic diet to slim into something I owned hadnt bloody worked

janj2301 · 14/01/2021 18:17

pre covid I LOVED looking in people's trolleys, I'd never say a word but would imagine diner parties, barbies etc, great fun

TowandaForever · 14/01/2021 18:22

@Sarahandduck18

I hope you complained about the Tesco worker and the security guard although I understand if you didn't have the energy to complain. I'm really sorry anyone spoke to you like that.

TowandaForever · 14/01/2021 18:23

@Sarahrellyboo1987

Sorry that post was for you.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/01/2021 18:24

If anyone dares come to my till when I'm back at work with a silly cushion and a rug I'm going to whack then round the head with it for being so dam stupid and putting us, who have to work in a shop and don't get furloughed at risk.

I bought a cushion recently for my DD who gets back pain while driving - the cushion is a big help. Is that OK with you or should she just suffer the pain? Oh, and she's driving for her job in case you need to know Hmm.

Corcory · 14/01/2021 18:24

Yes, a kettle is essential but I'm at a loss as to why you needed to go next door for hot water. Don't you have a hob and sauce pans?

DuesToTheDirt · 14/01/2021 18:29

pre covid I LOVED looking in people's trolleys,

Me too, I'd never comment, but I'd think, "Why does your your shopping consist of 5 lettuces and 6 bottles of beer?"

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 14/01/2021 18:31

@TowandaForever I did. The manager apologised in a somewhat ‘I can’t be arsed’ manner. My daughter was devastated and didn’t want me to continue as she felt embarrassed because the man was so loud and took close to her. I just hoped the man got a fortnight long bout of chronic diarrhoea!

RetailGail · 14/01/2021 18:32

you had no other cushions use @DuesToTheDirt ?

godmum56 · 14/01/2021 18:34

@Secretsquirrelsbuddy

Is alcohol essential???? For some it is. For some it isn’t. Is bottled water an essential if we all have taps.

It’s debatable. People need to focus more on staying safe when shopping not what people are buying.

if alcohol is essential then there is more going on than covid!
MumOfPsuedoAdult · 14/01/2021 18:40

I consider getting out of the house for my mental health essential. And if I needed a kettle I'd get it while I was walking and if anyone chose to comment on that it would be their problem not mine.

Fallingrain · 14/01/2021 18:42

@TheoriginalLEM I’m sorry but that’s a long long way from essential and I think that is selfish and irresponsible. It’s in complete contravention of the lockdown rules and an insult to others. My husband works for the NHS. I work from home full time when homeschooling. I’d love to see my elderly parents who are on their own, my Nan in a care home who I haven’t seen for a year. We’ve had several recent deaths in the family and I have mental health issues. We didn’t see anyone at Christmas. This is the problem with the rules - many people seem to think that they have a special case for them not applying to them.

RetailGail · 14/01/2021 18:44

alcohol for the alcoholics

have had a surge of theft....druggies need a fix so are now shoehorned into available essential retailers. violent and nasty!

RetailGail · 14/01/2021 18:46

@MumOfPsuedoAdult

no regard for staff then....the more you go in the more likely they are to contract something from you or whoever you pass it to should you get it

nobody cares about retail staff enough to give them more than a passing thought do they?

DuesToTheDirt · 14/01/2021 18:48

you had no other cushions use @Estreladebelem*

The shop was open, the cushion was for sale, it is not (yet) illegal to buy a cushion, any more than it is illegal to buy tea, coffee, wine rather than drinking water...

DuesToTheDirt · 14/01/2021 18:49

Oops quote fail there

Spidey66 · 14/01/2021 18:50

A kettle is essential, baby milk or no baby milk.

AMR3 · 14/01/2021 18:59

Lockdown 1 I went into supermarket on my way home from work, so already out and about not making a trip just for that, and bought a smoothie maker/blender thing. Nothing fancy, £20ish thing.

Got a few Hmmlooks at the till.

I was picking it up for a friend who was isolating with her disabled daughter, as hers broke earlier that day. I left it on her doorstep and no contact made. This was for her disabled daughter who one of the few ways to get not just some nutrients, but some of her very important medication into her, is blending it into fruit into smoothies.

Yes ok she could have ordered something from Amazon but still would have been from mid afternoon until whenever it arrived the next day without one.

So yeah, a blender/smoothie maker might not be essential to Joe Bloggs and would definitely be judged by the essentials police, but I’d say it bloody well was.

PepsiMaxCherry · 14/01/2021 19:08

Op i used to use a thermos for night feeds. It was even quicker than waiting for the kettle to heat up

wildchild554 · 14/01/2021 19:15

The washer dryer I ordered and had installed could be classed as non essential, I have been handwashing since beginning of first lockdown so i could afford a new one that wouldn't go on me. But it's a nightmare handwashing, plays havoc with my arthritis and one my sons is autistic and constantly wetting especially at the moment due to anxiety and I thought it was pretty essential as did the company that made an exception as they aren't meant to be installing at the moment and came in and installed it because I physically couldn't put it in.But technically I suppose I could of just carried on struggling to keep the moaners happy and thats coming from someone whos shielding due to health issues but I considered it a risk worth taking. Bet I got my curtain twitcher opposite something to gossip about all over facebook again like when my friend dared to get my medication for me lol.

sweetkitty · 14/01/2021 19:16

Whilst in Asda the other day the checkout lady was telling me they have regulars who pop in 2-3 times a day, once in the morning for their bread and papers, then at lunchtime and then for their dinner just for something to do. As someone who hates the place normally (it’s our only local supermarket) I cannot understand visiting twice a day, to have that level of loneliness.
