Because I've just been to tesco and brought a kettle. I've just had a bloke when I was stood in front to pay. Mumble about an 'essential kettle'

Did he know why I had to buy it. Did he plums!
It's not so I can go home and have a relaxing cuppa. Its so I can make formula for my baby. Because last night our kettle went bang!
We had to get hot water off the neighbour for this mornings bottle so I could then run to grab one.

What's essential to some isn't to others.

Yes I think there's prob a fine line but I wish people wouldn't judge

A kettle is definitely essential.

As a supermarket worker I would say the single packet of crisps at 10pm probably isn't!

frozendaisy · 13/01/2021 09:49

His problem not yours at least he has something to say and be judgemental about when he gets home. Imagine living with that?

Ruby slippers are non essential.

Everyone needs a kettle, heating hot water in a pan and trying to get it into bottles half asleep increases likelihood you will burn yourself with booking water and end up in A&E to get it dressed. So it's essential.

ChocOrange1 · 13/01/2021 09:50

The people who complain about essentials are ridiculous. If you dig down deep enough, pretty much nothing we have is essential. I bet that man had in his trolley plenty of items which he could live without - any drink except water could be deemed non essential, any "luxury" food item e.g. crisps, biscuits, yogurts, ham, butter, jam. Any cosmetics, deodorant, shampoo or shower gel. We can live without these things. But it wouldn't be a good quality of life would it.

People seem to forget that enjoying life is not "essential" but very few would be happy to live that way.

itchyfinger · 13/01/2021 09:51

I would say hot cuppas are definitely essential.

Springersrock · 13/01/2021 09:56

Not this lockdown, but the 1st one

We have an elderly, arthritic pony. She has to have pain relief and a supplement in her feed but won’t eat it without something to disguise the taste so she has it with peppermint tea.

I’d run out, out of stock in Asda when I’d done the weekly shopping for the last few weeks, so nipped in my local Co-Op.

Huge muttering from the people in the queue, but it’s the only way I can get the fussy madam to eat her feed when her pain relief is in it

TheoriginalLEM · 13/01/2021 09:56

Well i will be having my Dd1 and her dp for "christmas dinner" on sunday. My mum died just begore Christmas then myself, DP and dd2 got covid so Christmas didn't happen.

My dd does not leave her flat, at all, and her DP only for food (hes furloughed).

We are out of isolation and had had to return to work, both myself and DP dealing with the public both inside and outside of their homes despite not being deemed as key workers.

Woe betide anyone who tells me i can't see my daughter this weekend.

TheoriginalLEM · 13/01/2021 09:58

My kettle went pop too -- i bought one from Amazon but thats cos im.a lazy arse

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/01/2021 09:59

He’s a complete idiot, kettles aren’t something you buy for fun because you fancy having 2.

sofiaaaaaa · 13/01/2021 10:00

This is why I use the app, no one gets to judge what in my buying or not as it’s immediately hidden in my bags!

sofiaaaaaa · 13/01/2021 10:00

I’m *

ComDummings · 13/01/2021 10:01

But we are only allowed the bare essentials of gruel and rags according to some people. If you go and buy a kettle/milk (cheese will do apparently)/a new coat or gloves/paper you’re a granny killing covidiot.

Sparklingbrook · 13/01/2021 10:03

I think the app is brilliant. Scan and put straight into the bag. No queue, no cashier. In and out with whatever I need at the time.
HoppingOnSteppingStones · 13/01/2021 10:03

Couldn't wait for amazon or anything. He only goes 2.5 / 3 hourly max but longer at night so it was case of water next door. Bottle. Get sorted go to tesco. Then nest enough time for next feed.

We have dental check ups. We are planning to go, but have thought hard about whether they're essential. We have been shielding. However, there is a risk from dental emergencies as well, which might be more of a problem if things are left. One of my kids needs a regular fluoride treatment on their teeth and I don't want that to be missed out. And apparently dentists wear so much PPE and are so safety conscious that the risk is very small.

We went to a hospital appointment last week. That was essential, about a potentially sight-damaging condition.

That is it in terms of contacts in the past 2 or 3 weeks (shopping delivered)

Have you got a clubcard? Scan as you Shop really speeds things up.

Don't give him any head space. You went and got what you needed.

Liftmusic · 13/01/2021 10:07

I hate myself for picking on details now and I think a kettle is essential plus I don’t care what other people buy, but could you not have boiled water in a saucepan and then transferred to a jug in an emergency?

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 13/01/2021 10:08

Kettle is essential

PinkSpring · 13/01/2021 10:08

These people who feel the need to comment on if purchases of certain things are essential really really piss me off. If a shop is open and you are there, you can buy whatever they are selling!

What one person considers non essential, doesn't mean someone else wouldn't consider it an essential item. There isn't a bloody list of essential items! People can buy what they want to! Or would these people prefer that our baskets and trollies are monitored and stripped of anything they seem non-essential?!

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 13/01/2021 10:09

A coat is essential

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 13/01/2021 10:10

Is alcohol essential???? For some it is. For some it isn’t. Is bottled water an essential if we all have taps.

It’s debatable. People need to focus more on staying safe when shopping not what people are buying.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/01/2021 10:10

I had a slight disagreement on here a few months ago about whether tin openers were essential. My argument was, that if your tin opener was to break you might need to get another one quite quickly. They thought you should have spare ones, and no one uses tin openers that often.

This morning, on a suggested food bank donation list was... Tin openers. As a lot of food they give out needs one.

KatherineJaneway · 13/01/2021 10:11

Some prat on MN told me during the first lock down that milk and bread were not essentials.

Ignore him, your purchase sounds essential to me.

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 13/01/2021 10:12

A tin opener is essential. Some people are in bed sits relying on microwaves etc and very often canned food. Therefor it’s essential.

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 13/01/2021 10:13

A kettle is essential for boiling water. Potentially keeping someone warm who is maybe struggling to run their heating or again who have limited cooking provisions. It’s all relative
