Because I've just been to tesco and brought a kettle. I've just had a bloke when I was stood in front to pay. Mumble about an 'essential kettle'

Did he know why I had to buy it. Did he plums!
It's not so I can go home and have a relaxing cuppa. Its so I can make formula for my baby. Because last night our kettle went bang!
We had to get hot water off the neighbour for this mornings bottle so I could then run to grab one.

What's essential to some isn't to others.

Yes I think there's prob a fine line but I wish people wouldn't judge

Essential reasons to go to Tesco:
To purchase anything you personally feel is essential, as you are no doubt are correct and justified.
To scrutinise the purchases of other people in line with the above, judge them and behave passively aggressively towards them.
To replace feelings of ennui brought on by LD with the more interesting emotions of rage, disgust and despair at the selfishness of other people and a sense of self satisfaction at your superiority.

Non essential reasons to go to Tesco:
To attend a rave.
Any other reason given by another person that you do not agree with.

I bet he had a trolley full of coke, Wagon Wheels and other diabetes type 2 enabling sugar-fests.

Hm2020 · 13/01/2021 11:11

That bottle of vodka I bought in the corner shop at 7pm may have looked non essential but then they didn’t realise the day I’d had if they did they’d realise it was much more essential then say a kettle

MessAllOver · 13/01/2021 11:12

All the judging makes it sound like the crazies from the early spring threads are re-emerging. Telling people not to buy tampons, magazines, bread, milk...

None of these are essential:

  • Tampons - just sit on the loo for three days. Who wouldn't welcome a nice rest after wrangling the toddler for months on end?
  • Magazines - unlicensed firearms are illegal in this country, you know. Is there something you're not telling us? Do we need to contact your local police firearms unit?
  • Bread - let them eat cake. They'll prefer it anyway.
  • Milk - don't you have your own milk cow, like the rest of us? If not, as previous threads have indicated, grated cheese works just as well.

Not so crazy now, are we?

Kettles are only non essential in Wales. Maybe he was making a political comment...

MrsJBaptiste · 13/01/2021 11:16

It's so ridiculous! I can't believe there are really people who look at what other people are buying, who cares and has time for that?

If I fancy something then I'll go to the supermarket and buy it whether it's wine & crisps for a Friday night, croissants for a weekend breakfast or something nice for tea as the food we have in doesn't appeal that day.

There isn't much enjoyment in life at the moment so until the pubs, cafes and gyms open again then I'll buy what I bloody well like to cheer myself up!

Hoppinggreen · 13/01/2021 11:17

I think people can make a case for most things being essential but if I had to say what ISNT that I have seen people buy recently it would be clothes (although you could probably argue this if your child has suddenly grown etc), cushions, curtains, plants, take away coffee, takeaways generally.
If the shops selling these things are open then I dont judge people for buying them but if we were really going “essentials only” I would say it’s supermarkets only.

Catty1720 · 13/01/2021 11:18

Take away coffee and takeaways is a tricky one if it’s the only thing keeping these places a float.

Haffiana · 13/01/2021 11:18

This. As previous threads have proved, the only essential you need is cheese. Shopping for anything else is murdering granny. Grin

Liftmusic · 13/01/2021 11:21

Did op ever answer why in an emergency she couldn’t boil water on the hob and use a jug?
Honestly you would think some people are loving the covid threads Grin

Mrsjayy · 13/01/2021 11:21

The thought of cheese tea made me heave.

OnlyTeaForMe · 13/01/2021 11:22

I would say that 90% of the stuff people are browsing in our local Sainsbury's homeware section is non-essential.

We were only there to pick up a cable for the Wi-fi router extension - essential? Probably not, but DS (working from home) needed it.

fruitbrewhaha · 13/01/2021 11:22

Of course a kettle is essential. As long as you are buying to replace a broken one and not having a kitchen refresh.

MadameTuffington · 13/01/2021 11:24

@PinkSpring

These people who feel the need to comment on if purchases of certain things are essential really really piss me off. If a shop is open and you are there, you can buy whatever they are selling!

What one person considers non essential, doesn't mean someone else wouldn't consider it an essential item. There isn't a bloody list of essential items! People can buy what they want to! Or would these people prefer that our baskets and trollies are monitored and stripped of anything they seem non-essential?!

Spot on - everyone’s definition of ‘essential’ is wildly different and if supermarkets are open, people should be able to buy whatever the fuck they wish in that one shopping trip they are allowed.

The gentleman muttering about the OP’s purchase of a kettle needs to get out more (for his daily exercise).

Some people are stupidly petty!

Aww How is your pony doing now then?
Hope she is ok😕[/quote]
She’s absolutely fine thanks.

She has arthritis so has a joint supplement and a sachet of pain relief every day.

She’s retired so just a field ornament now, albeit one with an expensive vet habit and a taste for peppermint tea. Can buck and fart her way across the field with the best of them

I think she’s taking the piss to be honest, she just wants her slave to make her a hot cuppa in the morning

LiverColouredBitchPointer · 13/01/2021 11:24

You know, if they closed takeaways, obesity levels would lower, and thus fewer people become at risk of severe complications from covid...

Obviously, the populace would then be thin and out of jobs, buy hey!

BountyFul · 13/01/2021 11:26

I wouldn’t bother giving him your reason but I’d be tempted to comment on every item in his basket or ask to see what he’s got.

People have become so unkind and nosy during this pandemic.

Mrsjayy · 13/01/2021 11:27

Surely not Grin.

I think that’s a whole other debate Smile

The thought of cheese tea made me heave

If we all had to use grated cheese in our tea and coffee, I suspect a kettle would no longer be an essential item for many people (though the OP would still need one for baby) Grin.

Mouldiwarp1 · 13/01/2021 11:31

Sounds like if he was close enough to see what you were buying, he was too close anyway!

sueelleker · 13/01/2021 11:36

@herecomesthsun

We have dental check ups. We are planning to go, but have thought hard about whether they're essential. We have been shielding. However, there is a risk from dental emergencies as well, which might be more of a problem if things are left. One of my kids needs a regular fluoride treatment on their teeth and I don't want that to be missed out. And apparently dentists wear so much PPE and are so safety conscious that the risk is very small.

We went to a hospital appointment last week. That was essential, about a potentially sight-damaging condition.

That is it in terms of contacts in the past 2 or 3 weeks (shopping delivered)

I have a follow-up appointment at the eye hospital in 2 weeks time. You can bet I'll keep it!
Al1langdownthecleghole · 13/01/2021 11:38

I hope the complainer was on his monthly essential shop for sparse porridge oats as he clearly doesn't need anything else.

Beautifulbonnie · 13/01/2021 11:40

@Springersrock

Totally off the topic. But my god. Awesome idea about your pony! My pony had bute 3 times a day. She would have it in food. But as she got to 33-34 she got a lot worse (sadly the start of her demise) and had to have lots of things to try and help. God it was hard work.(and incredibly expensive!) I admire finding something your horse liked. I wish you all the best.
