Exercise isn't the reason for high transmission

Tens of millions of people are working in small offices or interacting all day with the public. Hour upon hour spent next to infectious people, and whilst masks might lower transmission somewhat, they're not enough to stop you getting infected in these places.

On my 90 minute dog walk today I saw one person from a long distance (I drove a few miles to somewhere quiet).

Why focus on the trivial when the main problems are indoor mixing at work and schools? Who cares if Boris goes on a bike ride, or someone drives 10 miles to exercise - it makes essentially no difference if done sensibly.

I agree with you

tappitytaptap · 12/01/2021 20:24

You are totally right, but that doesn’t make a good headline does it 🤷‍♀️

tappitytaptap · 12/01/2021 20:25

I live very close to the Peak District but I darent drive somewhere quiet there in case I get carted off by Derbyshire Police 😂

SeldomFollowedIt · 12/01/2021 20:25

I agree, I’m a TA and have had very close, sustained contact with two children today. God love the one who tried to whisper in my ear today, I drew the line there.

EmmanuelleMakro · 12/01/2021 20:26

Totally agree -it’s nonsense but hey let’s get a bash Boris headline out of it.

Bluegot · 12/01/2021 20:26

Agreed

MeowMeowLikeACow · 12/01/2021 20:27

People being outside, regardless of whether or not they are exercising, is not the reason for high transmission. It's ridiculous that so many people still believe this with everything we now know about the virus.

It's being transmitted in workplaces, and in people's homes where they are not obeying the rules. It's not being transmitted by a family stopping on a bench to eat a scotch egg when out on a walk or even by Boris taking a bike ride. The nation needs to get a collective grip.

SaltyAF · 12/01/2021 20:27

Yes I agree too.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/01/2021 20:27

Don't forget the biggest sources of infection are within hospitals and carehomes.
Doesn't work so well for the government to draw that to our attention though. Let the plebs blame each other over the negligible stuff.

enjoyingscience · 12/01/2021 20:29

Yes, couldn’t agree more.

SaltyAF · 12/01/2021 20:29

That said, thousands of people yomping up Snowdon and Pen y Fan per day isn't sensible either.

OnlyTeaForMe · 12/01/2021 20:30

And don't forget all the people in

  • churches/ mosques etc
  • garden centres
  • "essential" shops like B&M
  • shopping malls (still open even if most shops closed)
Jrobhatch29 · 12/01/2021 20:30

We went out for a walk tonight and my kids wanted takeaway hotdogs. They can't scoot and eat so we sat on a bench, only to see 2 policemen walking towards us a few mins later. I did think shit, busted but they just said good afternoon and smiled!

itsgettingweird · 12/01/2021 20:36

Agree.

I don't like the stopping for coffees part of exercise because that unnecessary contact and transmission.

And I also don't see why it's an issue Boris cycled 7 miles from home. That's not far at all.

My brother cycles 50-60 miles for a simple bike ride!

itsgettingweird · 12/01/2021 20:38

I've actually just read a news article about people flocking to B and M for a next looking mirror that's a fraction of the price. With loads of comments form people about buying 2-3 and how they've arranged them.

Hardly essential in a pandemic 🤦🏼‍♀️

tootsytoo · 12/01/2021 20:39

Agree it's ridiculous why don't people focus on the actual problems

starfro · 12/01/2021 20:40

I've yet to see any workplace that is "safe", or "covid secure". Yes, you can reduce the chance of transmission a bit, or in exceptional cases quite a bit, but nowhwere is anywhere near completely"safe".

If they can't make non-Covid wards "safe" in hospitals, where PPE is actually worn properly and other hygiene measures applied by experts, your "covid secure" workplace with random bits of masking tape and fabric masks is going to prevent very little.

Agree and the UK (world???) has gone crazy about this one. I have a friend who I go running with (I have a few, but I'm thinking about one particular one) who I was texting earlier, just catching up etc. We were discussing about whether or not to meet for a run together (just us two) and while we know we can, we feel a bit like we shouldn't. We both live in a rural location, but do live 5 miles away from each other in different villages so one of us would have to drive to the other (or we'd meet in the middle).

As for Boris on his bike, well I don't live within 7 miles to a supermarket. Really can't see the excitement of that one at all.

lljkk · 12/01/2021 20:50

It's being transmitted in people's homes when they ARE obeying the rules.

Lemons1571 · 12/01/2021 20:50

I agree too. I think the government prefer us to focus our ire on Mrs Jones who passed the time of day with a random passerby while sitting on a log drinking form a flask. Blaming Boris and co for tens of thousands of infections in long under funded hospitals doesn’t suit their agenda.

Ariela · 12/01/2021 20:54

To my mind, a 45 minute cycle ride would be 12-15 miles or so. 7 miles is thus not an unreasonable distance for Boris to be away from home.

Watermelon999 · 12/01/2021 20:54

Completely agree with you OP.

It’s ridiculous that they’re considering more restrictions outdoors.

They need to focus on the areas of high spread, they must know where these are?

whittingtonmum · 12/01/2021 20:55

Totally agree. Waste of time & resources to focus on outdoor exercises as risk of transmission is so minimal. Really not the issue. I guess it's easy to police: You pitch up at a local beauty spot all day and fine everyone who comes along in a car carrying a Starbucks. Other ways of enforcement might be much more labour intensive.

MrJinxyCat · 12/01/2021 20:57

We can’t blame the Government for the high cases, it’s us folk taking daily exercise outdoors that are causing the spread!
Takes our attention away from their cock ups!

Can’t believe this is even getting headlines, when we should be addressing what’s really causing the large numbers being infected, schools, nurseries, work places, supermarkets, garden centres etc etc.
Why is the focus on flipping outdoor exercise, it’s making me quite annoyed it’s so bloody stupid!

AethelsWhiteGoose · 12/01/2021 20:59

I live near the centre of a busy town in a densely populated part of the uk. I walk with the dog every day from home and barely see anyone. If I do then everyone, even runners, give me a wide berth, walk in road to avoid close contact. I really don’t think it’s people exercising outside spreading this thing.
