Exercise - where is the logic??

YogaLite · 12/01/2021 12:30

Why or why genuine users of countryside outdoor spaces travelling there in own car are scapegoats for the crisis caused by people crowding the streets before Christmas and mingling at Christmas???

Has anyone ever caught a virus on a walk in the hills??

Has government (and now police) lost the plot??

What is the point of pounding a pavement by the shops that are still open with people around?

I would far prefer to drive 5-10-20 miles TO AVOID them. As it is, I don't go out as constantly trying to dodge people on pavements is not what I would call a healthy exercise.

Just because people like to moan. And because they're too lazy to go out themselves so why should others.

Very dog in the mangery attitude - see also Brexit: "I don't want to work overseas so why should others be allowed to".

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2021 12:32

I don’t think the government will be keen to criminalise driving for exercise when Boris appears to have done that yesterday.

I don’t understand why they’re not pushing the message that indoors is the massive risk, not outdoors.

RaisinsRuinEverything · 12/01/2021 12:33

I agree with you. I don't think you're breaking the law by driving a short distance to exercise though. The time spent exercising has to be longer than the time spent driving IIRC.

YogaLite · 12/01/2021 12:40

Oh sure, I normally walk 10-15 miles and the drive normally is less than 1hr.

Not sure police now accept explanations, they just want us to turn around and go back - or pay fine.

I could drive 5 miles to walk my dog and not see a soul. Or I could walk my dog local to my house and be dodging loads of families out walking.

Common sense tells you which is preferable.

YogaLite · 12/01/2021 12:44

Common sense is dead now, I am so angry Angry

The Guidance states:

• outdoor exercise. This should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)

It clearly states you CAN 'travel for exercise' (within your area).

The government and police should stop LYING that you are not allowed to travel for exercise.

Yet again today a minister suggesting that you should go as far as you can get under your own steam.

That is a lie and not what the Guidance actually says.

The government and police really should divert their attention towards the real areas of virus transmission: supermarkets, workplaces and hospitality, as well as unfortunately hospitals.

AdoptedBumpkin · 12/01/2021 12:45

I agree, the rules and the enforcement and non-enforcement is increasingly illogical.

Orangeblossom77777 · 12/01/2021 12:46

I wondered if it was to take the focus off the Christmas mixing etc which is basically the fault of the Government. Kind of like a distraction perhaps.

Orangeblossom77777 · 12/01/2021 12:47

Similar happened after Eat out to help out, public blamed then as well.

LouNatics · 12/01/2021 12:49

In the last lockdown I got over 12 miles from home under my own steam. Into a different county. I could have walked much further than that had I not also had to walk the return journey. Even so, I don’t see anything in the rules banning me from walking 20+ miles and getting the train home...

Janaih · 12/01/2021 12:51

Divide and conquer, about the only thing our government is good at.

YogaLite · 12/01/2021 12:53

Not according to Cressida Dick, she said this morning door to door under own steam only or face fine.
Unless of course you have a bubble 20 miles away, then it's ok Angry

The police should be enforcing the law, not making it up.

dottiedodah · 12/01/2021 13:01

I think the two ladies stopped by police in Derbyshire were unfortunate. The police spotted easy targets there I think .I wonder if they would have been so keen is it were a couple of Burly blokes with Tattoos and a staffie?

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/01/2021 13:04

I agree with you 100% OP.

Sandsnake · 12/01/2021 13:07

Yep, lots of lazy people about who adore having the excuse not to exercise and want to force others to do the same as it normalises it. There are so many more infringements, which genuinely contribute to spreading the virus - for example, employers forcing employees to work when they should be isolating, unsafe working conditions, people having indoor gatherings etc. The Police should be going after these people, and not the easy photo opportunity of people who have driven for exercise (and haven’t even broken any rules in doing so).

Bythemillpond · 12/01/2021 13:10

If we didn’t have the November lockdown people would have got their Christmas shopping over a period of several weeks. Instead of a 3.5 weeks of panic.

I have no idea why we don’t open up hospitality as the figures surely show that a socially distanced coffee in a coffee shop or pint in a pub or a plate of pasta in your local Italian is not the cause of the massive rise in infections . It is people going to other peoples houses to have a coffee or a drink or a meal where social distancing is not adhered to.

If Hospitality and the Eat out to help out scheme had anything to do with the rise in infections then we would have seen growing infections from a couple of week after pubs and restaurants were allowed to open.
Instead of later on in September after schools went back.

We are torpedoing at least one whole industry that if anything was not the cause of the growing infection rates and could be argued was keeping the infection rate down.

PicsInRed · 12/01/2021 13:11

Just wait til Boris or one of his team are caught doing it, then it will be "fine".

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/01/2021 13:11

Yes, I'm sure the complainers on here enjoy sitting on the sofa in front of the TV all day and can't understand anyone needing fresh air and exercise.

I think Johnson did get 'caught' cycling 7 miles from home. Except it was perfectly legal, as it is for the rest of us, so not a story at all.
PicsInRed · 12/01/2021 13:14

Instead of later on in September after schools went back.

Was it "schools going back" or was it "schools going back after selfish thickies returned from hols abroad"?

bestbefore · 12/01/2021 13:21

Rules are literally being made up and no one can agree! A 7 mile bike ride is perfectly fine IMHO. People are encouraged to cycle to work and that could easily be 7 miles: why would one be ok and the other not?!
Also to drive a short distance to do a specific remote walk surely is better than walking there (and therefore bumping into more people en route) Confused

YogaLite · 12/01/2021 13:31

Apparently Boris was driven in the car to cycle in the park.
