Exercise - where is the logic??

YogaLite · 12/01/2021 12:30

Why or why genuine users of countryside outdoor spaces travelling there in own car are scapegoats for the crisis caused by people crowding the streets before Christmas and mingling at Christmas???

Has anyone ever caught a virus on a walk in the hills??

Has government (and now police) lost the plot??

What is the point of pounding a pavement by the shops that are still open with people around?

I would far prefer to drive 5-10-20 miles TO AVOID them. As it is, I don't go out as constantly trying to dodge people on pavements is not what I would call a healthy exercise.

@HesterShaw1

Surely the fact that we are now all arguing over whether Boris was driven or whether he cycled there tells us something?

Shall we...not? And concentrate on the things that actually matter?

Cressida Dick says she does not have the staff to police the law on wearing face coverings in shops (this is an actual law) but she does have the staff to stop and fine people who are travelling short distances for their exercise (even though the lockdown Guidance specifically says this is allowed, to access open space for exercise).

This matters. The police and government are inventing a law/rule that does not exist and denying that Guidance exists that allows travel for exercise, while refusing to enforce a law that does actually exist (face covering) due to shortage of staff Confused

It is making people scared to travel for the exercise that they are allowed to do. It is confining people inside their homes who feel that the exercise on their town streets exposes them to too many people.

@lazeeboyget that and I agree with you @lazeeboy! I agree with every word.

What I mean is that this is all a smokescreen. We are arguing about Boris on his bike in Newham, when what we should actually be taking the government to task for is their shambolic, incompetent, appalling record through this whole crisis - on every single conceivable level, including the fact that people feel they must cower in their homes being afraid, rather than being in the fresh air getting fitter! They must be delighted that people are quarrelling about distances.

@wanderings

By "cracking down" on exercise, they look as if they're doing something to beat the virus

They are rightly discouraging people from hitting the road (to have a coffee with mates) when there is no need - and running the risk of an accident, stopping at petrol stations, etc (increasing virus transmission in the process)

Great post @BogRollBOGOF

It’s not to do with the space you do your exercise in. Hmm

Driving for exercise = more cars on road
More cars on road = greater chance of accident
Greater chance of accident = potential need for hospital treatment/ambulances/air ambulance/police resources all of which are in short supply.

Nonsense.

Nobody has used that as a reason why people shouldn’t be driving (apart from on here).

@dottiedodah so true.

They pick their targets ime of living in high crime areas: hint, it's not the troublemakers!

copernicium · 12/01/2021 17:14

How many people walk to The Range/B&M/B&Q? Not trying to fine those drivers are they 🤔

HesterShaw1 · 12/01/2021 17:19

And if we follow that logic where will it end?

Back in the spring in Cornwall there was all sorts of nonsense being spouted on social media about not being "allowed" in the water for a surf, because you were putting the emergency services at risk and say you needed "rescuing"? Which conveniently ignores the fact that the people who use the water during winter and lockdowns tend to be pretty competent water users who look after each other when they are in the water and when there is no lifeguard cover anyway. You see these self righteous stay at homers posting angry diatribes on local news FB pages whenever someone needs help from the coastguard or the RNLI: there was a tragedy in the summer where an entire family got swept into the sea including little children, and these nasty bastards were posting on FB saying that they should have been left where they were because the emergency services were "for emergencies" and these people were "selfish". Like a nine year old kid drowning in the freezing sea isn't an emergency!

I'm aware that I'm starting to pointlessly rant now though, so I'll stop.

The problem I see is that people don't use common sense.
There are a number of beauty spots and lakes around me (all with car parks and cafes etc). They're just too far to walk there, walk around and walk home with DS so we would drive (10 mins or so). The carparks are overflowing, people pulling over and leaving cars in verges or blocking the local houses or messing up fields. Rather that seeing a full carpark and going somewhere else, they try and force themselves in and then complain about it being full!
I've spoke to a couple of people who've done this and they've said that they specifically drove there for exercise as they thought it would be quieter than where they live.

My daughter age 28 is living at home, I have no problem with this, there is plenty of room. She has just completed a Masters Degree in Sport Nutrition. Now she has a job with a local tech company, to be honest I'm not sure what it's all about! The problem is that she feels like all her education and university wand Masters has been a waste of time and money, as she can't find a job in that field, and she really is very unhappy. The job she is doing requires her to now work from home, and she is stuck upstairs on the computer for 8 hours a day, nearly demented. She is a very good cyclist and had a fantastic experience with a team, she had an accident which has left her with pain in her arm, also with the dark nights, she's not able to get out on her bike, so her fitness is diminishing. She really lives to cycle. Sadly I can't do much about the situation, I suppose she's lucky to have found a job in the current climate, but she's so sarcastic, when her dad or I speak to her all we get are nasty one word replies, or comments on how she doesn't have time to do anything but work, insomuch that we daren't open our mouths. Part of me wants to say we all had to work, so suck it up, but I know she hates her life, and I don't like seeing her so unhappy. I know no one can do much, just wanted to get it off my chest really!
