Good on Morrisons and Sainsbury’s

I’m very pleased to hear that both these supermarkets will be banning anyone not wearing a face mask (unless they have a medical exemption) from entering their stores. If only we had the resources to do the same on London buses. I cannot stand the non mask wearing idiots who think it’s perfectly acceptable to spread their germs and potentially the virus to others, including elderly and vulnerable people.

Well done Morrisons and Sainsbury’s!

Don’t congratulate them just yet.

There’s nothing stopping customers who aren’t exempt and refuse to wear a mask from entering - all they need to do is lie and claim they’re exempt.

Therefore in practice, nothing may change.

BlueBaubles12 · 12/01/2021 09:46

I’m thinking of moving to Morrison’s from Tesco, although thats because I like their hot pies.

Surely they’ll have to show some sort of medical exemption note from a healthcare professional?

It's pointless as people have always worn a mask to get in then pull it down under their nose. Cleaners even do this in hospitals.

sofiaaaaaa · 12/01/2021 09:49

No, that’s not a requirement in the UK. They’re taken at their word - it’s no questions asked/no proof necessary.

GreyWall · 12/01/2021 09:50

If the government really wanted to stop the spread they would do they same as all the other countries, harsher lockdown and masks in classrooms.

GreyWall · 12/01/2021 09:51

Basically the government don't want to stop the spread they're just paying lip service to the situation.

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2021 09:53

So unbelievably selfish.

@Dongdingdongdongdin. Surely they’ll have to show some sort of medical exemption note from a healthcare professional?

No such thing exists.

MaxNormal · 12/01/2021 09:54

Surely they’ll have to show some sort of medical exemption note from a healthcare professional?

That doesn't exist. Exemptions are self-certified, that's the law. It's not possible to get one from a medical professional.
So all Sainbury's and Morrisons have done is reiterated the existing situation.

Does your concern extend to the abovementioned elderly and vulnerable people who can't wear masks? Or should they just stay at home so that you can crack on and kid yourself that you are "safe"?

Dongdingdong · 12/01/2021 09:58

Read my OP. I said “unless they have a medical exemption”.

Who do you think is going to be writing these non existent exemption notes OP?

BiggerBoat1 · 12/01/2021 10:02

Good on them indeed, but there will still be idiots who claim to be exempt just because they are selfish and ignorant.

MaxNormal · 12/01/2021 10:02

Read my OP. I said “unless they have a medical exemption”.

And it's been explained to you that it's self-certified, so how do you know who to judge really?

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2021 10:03

Anyone can say they are medically exempt-that's the problem. And nobody can argue, least of all supermarket staff.

MrsMiaWallis · 12/01/2021 10:04

I use Waitrose now, despite being resentful about how much it costs. They have a couple of burly security guards on the door being very strict about masks 👍

No, because they don't exist.

All Sainsbury's and Morrisons are doing is making a song and dance about following existing guidelines. They can't/don't have the power 'crack down' any more than they already should have been.

In what way are they being strict?
MrsMiaWallis · 12/01/2021 10:05

If you are medically exempt then you should stay at home.

MrsMiaWallis · 12/01/2021 10:06

I've only seen one incident. Person had no mask, they said you can't come in, person left, swearing.

MerciSeat · 12/01/2021 10:06

@MrsMiaWallis

If you are medically exempt then you should stay at home.
What, and not go to work either?

And I trust you also advocate small children and babies staying at home unless they mask up?

Orf1abc · 12/01/2021 10:07

And the ableist comments begin.

MaxNormal · 12/01/2021 10:07

I used Waitrose without a mask the other day (had my lanyard on though) and the wee friendly security guard didn't even comment on that as we had a brief friendly chat.

MerciSeat · 12/01/2021 10:07

I assume that person wasn't exempt, then.
