Good on Morrisons and Sainsbury’s

I’m very pleased to hear that both these supermarkets will be banning anyone not wearing a face mask (unless they have a medical exemption) from entering their stores. If only we had the resources to do the same on London buses. I cannot stand the non mask wearing idiots who think it’s perfectly acceptable to spread their germs and potentially the virus to others, including elderly and vulnerable people.

Well done Morrisons and Sainsbury’s!

Not a lot I can do about it. I've never seen that behaviour myself. Sounds awful. Why can't you wear a mask?

You're a part of the problem. You've literally told people here to stay at home.

MerciSeat · 12/01/2021 10:31

@MrsMiaWallis

I do. And it is hard, because even with a lanyard, I'm still threatened and abused and spat at and told that I should 'stay at home'

You haven't seen that behaviour? You have just told me I should stay at home. You.

And I have trigeminal neuralgia, a neurological condition which is triggered by (among other things) touch to the face/temple. Attacks are so painful I can lose consciousness and wet/shit myself when I do. Is that good enough for you?

HoppingOnSteppingStones · 12/01/2021 10:31

Why the hell should I stay at home. Because my ex used to suffocate me and strangle me that I can't cope with anything by my mouth. I can't even wear a round neck top because it causes panic attacks.
Should I hide in my house like I did for many years.
I don't think so. Don't like it. Keep your distance, just as I do!

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 12/01/2021 10:31

Glad they are doing it. My local Sainsbury’s is a joke—you see groups of 6 construction workers coming in loudly laughing, no masks. Absolute plague pit.

Where are the waitrose near me had a man on the door, you have to queue and he wouldn’t let that happen.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2021 10:32

I don't think shop staff/security would have time to be scrutinising bits of paper written by GPs or whoever to prove exemption. Plus people could probably knock a fraudulent one up fairly easily.

If people are exempt he'd have no choice.

And again, a massive thumbs up to Waitrose (and Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, M&S, Aldi and Lidl) for being so understanding and empathetic to those who are exempt. Special mentions to Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco for their tannoy announcements reminding shoppers that some people are exempt and to be mindful of that.

Oh calm down. My best friend's mum died yesterday - of covid, actually suffocated to death - so forgive me if I think its important that people wear masks. Wear a lanyard and stop making it all about you.

I'm sorry for you loss. I've lost loved ones to covid too, I know how dreadful it is.

But you definitely did tell people to stay at home if they're exempt, lanyard or not (and I've said several times that I wear one).

That is between you and your dr you shouldn't have to explain to complete strangers to gain entry into a public place you have every bloody right to be in.

Yes you get liars but you cant go accusing all your customers because the ones who will complain are those who are genuinely exempt and I dont think they want the press tbh it wouldn't look good would it.

People should just concentrate on doing what they are supposed to be doing. If you are close enough see or hear alot of the exemptions being broken then you are also breaking them by not distancing properly

MerciSeat · 12/01/2021 10:38

@MrsMiaWallis and I wasn't making it all about me - you asked why I was exempt, and I told you.

Noname12345 · 12/01/2021 10:38

I went to morrisons last night couple walked in ahead of me, no mask. Security stopped them, they didn't have a mask so he handed some over. The guy then claimed to be exempt but had no certificate so then after a conversation with security appeared to agree to wear one. I later saw him in the shop with the mask down his chin having clearly bumped into an old friend and went over to shake his hand and have a good catch up with him

There's no such thing as a 'certificate'. I'm not sure you heard correctly as Morrisons staff know this or maybe this didn't happen
MaxNormal · 12/01/2021 10:41

Why can't you wear a mask?

I don't believe it's any of your business why people can't wear masks.

MerciSeat I just hope that this is over soon so you can go back to living your life without suffering abuse. I feel so angry and so sorry for you reading this.

Orf1abc · 12/01/2021 10:45

@MrsMiaWallis You're a bully. You're targeting and gaslighting a disabled person to detract from your own ableist comments.

This is the kind of thing people with disabilities have to put up with everyday. This would not be acceptable against any other group of people, so why is ok to do it to those with disabilities?

MrsMiaWallis · 12/01/2021 10:53

MrsMiaWallis You're a bully. You're targeting and gaslighting a disabled person to detract from your own ableist comments

Rubbish.

Saying you've never seen exempt people being told to stay at home when you yourself told exempt people to stay at home.

Asking me a question and when I answered told me to calm down and not make it about me.

There you go.

buffyp · 12/01/2021 10:57

@Dongdingdong

There’s nothing stopping customers who aren’t exempt and refuse to wear a mask from entering - all they need to do is lie and claim they’re exempt.

Surely they’ll have to show some sort of medical exemption note from a healthcare professional?

No because there is no legal requirement and most doctors won’t give one. Sorry to disappoint you. I went into Morrison’s yesterday and no one so much as glanced my way. It was lovely actually. People minding their own business.
buffyp · 12/01/2021 10:59

@Dongdingdong

It's pointless as people have always worn a mask to get in then pull it down under their nose. Cleaners even do this in hospitals.

So unbelievably selfish.

No more selfish than people willing to throw young peoples mental health under the bus or who don’t give a shit about cancer screening/treatment being stopped.

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/11/police-in-england-say-they-wont-enforce-masks-in-supermarkets

The police won't be getting involved either.

LemonSquirtInTheEyeOfLife · 12/01/2021 11:03

@Frazzledmum55 this mask is the best reusable one I've found for glasses. It folds flat which is useful. And once you find your perfect size, you can make a paper template & make more masks. No fussing with trying to get pleats properly spaced out either.

I can’t stand idiots who show not the slightest bit of compassion or empathy for different peoples situations. Yes, there may be some selfish people using it as a excuse but there are plenty of genuine reasons why someone can’t wear a mask including victims of rape. You don’t get to decide whether it’s acceptable or not. I also can’t stand people who profess to care about saving lives but who, in reality only care about saving Covid lives. They don’t give a toss about deaths from anything else.
buffyp · 12/01/2021 11:05

@MrsMiaWallis

If you are medically exempt then you should stay at home.
Nice disablist comment there. That is an appalling comment. If your so paranoid about getting it maybe YOU should stay at home rather than making horrendous, discriminatory comments.
Nicknamegoeshere · 12/01/2021 11:07

But theoretically anybody can buy a lanyard and wear it, no?

TransplantedScouser · 12/01/2021 11:08

Does anyone know where on the government website it says its a self certifying process?

I've had yet another row with "D"M. I wear a lanyard for reasons I don't wish to share with her.

This morning in the hunt for unwaxed lemons I went into four super markets (ASDA, Sainsbury, Morrisons and coop). I did all my shopping at Sainsbury but then had to go to three others as they had no lemons.

Only Morrisons even challenged me and when I pointed out I was exempt, guard said "ok then love"

he had a pointed comment when I walked out with four bags of lemons about "essential" - and I just smiled.

Anyway, I spoke to the mother and when I pointed out it wasn't enforceable, she was adamant that you can get something from the doctors if you ask.

I know its somewhere that doctors are advised not to give them out, but I can't find it

buffyp · 12/01/2021 11:08

@MrsMiaWallis

I assume that person wasn't exempt, then

I wouldn't have thought so, no. The majority aren't exempt.

You have no idea whether they are or not. Your prejudice is appalling. Unfortunately for you the law does not agree with you.
